Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Audio Adaptation

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Audio Adaptation

Project Overview

I am adapting a chapter of sci-fi icon Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K Dick into an audio drama format in the style of Audible dramas such as William Gibson's Alien 3 or The Sandman. You may better know its film adaptation: Blade Runner.

Specifically, I am adapting Chapter 8, which details Bounty Hunter Rick Deckard's hunt for the escaped and highly dangerous Nexus-6 type android which goes by the name Polokov.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep is a grounded, cynical take on humanity's future, with grounded, cynical characters. Identical-looking to humans, a group of psychopathic and highly-advanced Nexus-6 androids have escaped from Mars to Earth. It is up to Rick Deckard of the SFPD to destroy these machines, and make some money along the way.

When in doubt of how to deliver an audition line, err on the side of realism as opposed to melodrama.

I am a huge fan of Philip K. Dick, and have always wondered how a faithful adaptation of his work would feel if it was brought to life. I have selected this chapter as it works best as a stand-alone story, although I do recommend the entire novel, as this section only scratches the surface of what it contains, and deviates greatly from the (still excellent) film adaptation!

My goal is to create an experience that sounds immersive, and works as a great portfolio piece for both myself, my collaborator, and, of course, the cast.

What can you expect from me?

• Clear communication and updates regarding the project's progress.

• A high quality and immersive edit, supported by cleanly recorded and mixed SFX, using professional-level equipment and software.

• The completed piece in the file format of your choice for easy addition to your portfolio.

What do I want from you?

• Cleanly recorded voice work.

• Willingness to re-record lines after initial submission if necessary.

My previous project, Eavesdropper, can be found here: https://youtu.be/-e7HTvz05Mo

My collaborator and I aim to have this project completed by the end of March, with the end of April as an absolutely final back-up in case of some unseen disaster. Trust me, I know how it is to work on a project without concrete deadlines.

The estimated final run time of this project is 9 to 10 minutes, not including time for credits.

Please note that I live in the UK, so please forgive any short delays in communication caused by timezones. (And my British spelling and grammar)

Rick Deckard

Role assigned to: Wei Huan

Rick is a bounty hunter, who cares more for money than anything else, at least at first. He puts weight into his words, a habit that is only broken when he becomes frustrated or is put under extreme stress.

We are not looking for a Harrison Ford impression (although his take on the character is perfectly serviceable and you can take inspiration from it if you would like) we are looking for anybody who can sound appropriately rugged and cynical.

This role contains a lot of sighing, grunting, and harrumphing. Rick is a man of few words when he isn't complaining, and an android tries to strangle him at the end of the chapter, so bear that in mind.

  • I'm sure the test works. Besides, we've already confirmed Polokov's an android. Any luck and I can catch *him* by surprise like he did Dave.

  • Don't put any more calls through to me from Seattle- and what kind of world exactly are we coming to, where an android rings up a bounty hunter and offers him assistance?

  • Tell Harry I got Polokov! Christ, he came close but I got him! I made a thousand dollars from the andy that lasered Dave.

Harry Bryant is Rick Deckard's boss at the San Francisco Police Department, and should sound appropriately authoritative.

  • Our friend Polokov here knows we're after him. He'll jump ship soon, if he hasn't already.

  • Mhm. Shot a laser right through his spine. Posed as some anthead trash collector. Must've been damn good at it to get Dave to lower his guard like that.

  • There can't be one slip-up, Rick. The Nexus-6 is different.

Role assigned to: Kay

Rachael Rosen is first and foremost: an android. Androids differ from their film counterparts in the sense that they truly are emotionless machines, at least for the most part. Rachael Rosen is Rick's liaison within the Rosen Association, and presents a front of refined intelligence and gentle persuasiveness. Her tone only hints at warmth.

However, when Rick acts against her advice, her true self is revealed, and her tone turns completely cold. Arguably, this reveal is the most emotion we see Rachael express, as she tries her best to intimidate Rick.

  • Hello Officer Deckard. Are you busy right now, or can I talk to you?

  • (trying very hard to persuade Rick to let her accompany him on his hunt) But I really think you need me.

  • (dropping the act) You don't realise how agile an escaped Nexus-6 is, how impossible it will be for you. Without me, one of them will get you before you can get it.

Sandor Kadalyi/Polokov

Role assigned to: SkullsaPlenty

Sandor Kadalyi is an Officer of the Soviet Union's WPO, who has been tasked with accompanying Rick in his hunt for the advanced Nexus-6 androids.

However, he is actually the android Polokov in disguise, who earlier shot Rick's colleague in the spine.

Like all androids, Polokov feels no emotion, however, at least while posing as Kadalyi, he is overly friendly, as if making up for his deception. The book describes him as "beaming like a Slavic Santa" when he is describing his gun. However, as soon as his deception is revealed, he coldly states his intentions to kill Rick, then tries to do so.

  • (greeting) Officer Deckard, The bounty hunter for the San Francisco Police Department?

  • We made these ourselves. You like it? What's different about it functionally is... here, take it.

  • (unemotive) Why won't my laser tube fire? I see. Then I will have to break your pencil neck.

Role assigned to: Hannah Hebblethwaite

The Operator is Rick's first point of call at the San Francisco Police Department whenever he needs to check in, and is the first to know whenever Rick makes a development in his search for androids.

The Operator handles the phones and phone connections, and is unimpressed by both Rick's bragging and complaining.

  • (deadpan) Congratulations Mr Deckard. I'm sure your wife will be pleased.

  • Shall I pass the message along that you... "Got Polokov"? He'll understand that, will he?

  • You're on the Nexus-6s? Good luck, Mr Deckard, I hear they're killers.

  • Polokov didn't show up for work today. No explanation. What's he done, officer?
