Project Overview

Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei (デジタル・デビル・ストーリー　女神転生, Dejitaru Debiru Sutōrī Megami Tensei)? was the first book in a trilogy of novels written by Aya Nishitani and illustrated by Hiroyuki Kitazume. It was written in the late 1980s, and is the original source material that would eventually spawn the entire Megami Tensei franchise. The novel was adapted into anime OVA.


Welcome to the, Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei visual novel project. In this project we will be adapting the fan translated version of the story to bring attention to this underappreciated classic. The final product will look very similar to the more popular, Persona franchise videogames, of which they are based on this story.

I would to issue a warning, that this story does cover mature themes such as: religion, violence, murder, and rape. If you are easily offended or are under the age of 18, please exit now.

The premise of the story revolves around a self-taught programmer in a Japanese high school, Akemi Nakajima. He has developed a program that can summon demons, he uses this to exact his revenge on his bullies but eventually loses control of this new power. This loss of control over his creation; in-turn, endangers his love interest, Yumiko Shirasagi. He must then go on a journey to stop his creation and save the girl he loves.

This project covers a dark subject matter, however I’d like for it to be a fun experience. Your acting abilities will make or break this project so let’s grow as actors and creators! Please submit auditions with various different takes and inflections, and be sure to give it your best. I look forward to your auditions!

The story is told mainly through the voice of a narrator. This is heart and soul of the project and needs to be done with delicate care. The voice needs to match the emotional intensity of each scene, you are trying to get the audience engaged into the story. Provided below are lines from different points of the story with different emotional tones.

  • Neutral tone (good for descriptions):

    This story takes place eighteen years ago, when most people did not even know of the existence of the Internet, and personal computers were normally thought of as standalone devices. 

    In a town called Kuniritsu, a suburb of Tokyo, there was a school known as Jusho High. 

  • Dramatic tone (used for action scenes):

    The same instant Nakajima spoke, a fist flew into his solar plexus. Without even a chance to cry out, Nakajima fell to the floor. Kondo followed up his punch with a low kick. That was followed by single kicks to the chest and the lower stomach--carefully placed with enough force to hurt badly, but not knock their target out. Afraid of getting involved, Nakajima's classmates started to leave the classroom one by one. 

  • Somber tone (when things are sad):

    Nakajima collapsed onto the seat and stared forward resolutely, all the while regretting he had ever applied to this school.

The protagonist of the story and the reincarnation of the god Izanagi. Medium range voice talent. Nakajima is a self-taught programmer at Jusho high school and creates the devil summoning program that acts as the central conflict of the story. I’m looking for a voice similar to Justin Cook’s portrayal of Yusuke Urameshi from Yu Yu Hakusho. He is portrayed as: polite, calm, and quiet to the general public; however, there is a dark side to him. He has interests in dark magic and has homicidal thoughts of revenge against his fellow students for bullying him. I would like the impression of someone who is mysterious.

  • Saddened and a bit annoyed:

    “If you’re just going to write the same old excuse, you might as well just photocopy the thing…” 

  • Chuckling but holding back pain

    “His energy doubles whenever he’s near a woman.”

  • Holding back anger to becoming angry:

    Sensei, take a good look at me. This wound on my lip, the bruise on my face. I got the crap beaten out of me by Kondo from the karate club. Takamizawa Kyoko is just as guilty. The school just lets wild animals like that run free, and doesn’t do anything to deal with them. No matter what happens to me in the classroom, the teachers and students just pretend it didn’t happen. The violence that happens in this school is as plain as day, and yet nobody gets punished.

The high school bully character. Medium to low range voice talent. The idea is to convey a realistic high school bully and not an over the top stereotype. He’s quick to anger because he isn’t very bright. I want the impression that he is a very shallow and shortsighted individual.

    “I don’t wanna hear your excuses. You gotta learn what happens to people who come on to Kyoko.” 

  • Gleefully mocking:

    “Hey, lucky you! Looks like you’ve gotten a reprieve. I’ve gotta say I’m surprised at what a weak little runt you are. Beating you up was just a waste of energy.

  • Charging Angrily at students for attacking Kyoko

    “Argh!!!!”
