DeRailed
Project Overview
DeRailed is a first person horror shooter game that is heavily based on telling an immersive single player story in the vain of Metro 2033 and Bioshock. The game is set in an alternate future where American society survives in underground cities after a nuclear war errupted in the 1970s, but none of the characters know this other than Rick, Oswald and the Governor, as its been systematically removed from history by the government to keep morale high.

The main character of the game and the only person the player sees this world through. He is a worn out and under-performing detective who's tolerance to the insanity of the world around him becomes less and less as the game goes on.
Must mean I’m going crazy, all those locals around here who go missing seem to have that in common.
Police Business, meaning none of yours.
What more is there to know? We’ve all lived in the same city, not much has ever changed and I don’t think it ever will.
Oswald is the FBI's main field liaison/agent and is the player's window into the grander schemes of the government and their enemies. He is uncomfortably friendly at times, but never to the point where its noticeable.
Right, I want you to go through your contacts. Try and see what’s going on in the underworld that might have a tie in to him. Anything related to a social movement, revolution or suspicious new projects taking up tons of manpower.
I would say it’s nice to see you again, but the fact that we are seeing each other again means the situation is bad. The Bureau caught wind of some rumors.
Rick is a domestic terrorist who plans on destroying the current form of government and installing a fair and equal to all neo-communist society. He is charismatic but flawed as he ignores opposing ideals and tries to crush his enemies whenever he can.
There’ll be time to talk soon enough, come with us and see whats in store for the future.
Everyone dreams of leaving this city, heading off to a land with blue up above and wide vistas with no walls to suffocate your mind with insanity. It’s part of our destiny to reach that place, trust me I know, and so do those fools in the government and the FBI. They’re human trash, trust me.
Comrades! We will be gathering in the theater room to discuss our course of action! Soon the time will come to strike down the autocracy!
The Lieutenant is the main character's direct boss and has little care for them beyond the cases they work on.
As immediately as the circumstances allow are my orders, so get going. By the way, here’s a few batteries for that head lamp of yours.
[looks up momentarily] uh huh right. Anyway, we have a break in the case.
I’ve been told to redirect you to an agent [looks at paper] Oswald, FBI. Familiar name?
The president is only known by the tapes and broadcasts he appears in to the main characters. It is unknown if he is even still alive or when the footage of him was recorded, but seems to still be active in his role as leader of the United States
Greetings Governor of uh, Alaska. If you are playing this recording it means that the worst has come to pass.
God bless America.
I hereby order your department to liquidize your city by shutting off all power grids and sealing off all public transit in order to deny the enemy use of American assets.
The governor is the head of the government as far as all the citizens of the city are concerned, and spends most of his time in pointless meetings and living a mostly care free life as he never has to worry about personal needs or re-election. He shows some naive loyalty to the American government without knowing if the rest of the country is still even alive.
Peabody? I thought that the train was blown up, not stolen.
Fine, but you get the blame if the president comes on the line.
No, I’m sure the President will have a plan.
The local shifty character, Dmitri is the area's top drug and alcohol dealer who is constantly paranoid and rushing between gigs. He happens to owe the protaganist several favors for his lack of pursuit in his crimes in exchange for information about terrorists like Rick.
Right, these cronies keep coming and doing the rounds, promising free shit and the like if they go and work with Rick on some new tunnel operation.
Yeah… what about it?
Ahh Seth, my friend (looks back) I’d invite you in but now’s not exactly the best of times.
Just an operator of the city's main public announcement system, has the role of reading out government broadcasts.
Attention, a state of emergency has been declared.
All citizens are to shelter in place.
Attention! All citizens are ordered to tune their radios and televisions to the government broadcast station.
Just the generic operator of the pressure locked gate separating the outskirts of the city from the maze of maintenance tunnels.
Ah ha the lone ranger. Bill said you’d come out.
It’s nice to see another human face while in this shit hole.
The power grid has been on the fritz since maintenance hasn’t done shit out there in for-fucking-ever so I’ll see if I can even get this thing online.
The checkpoint guard that usually would make sure nobody unauthorized comes through to access the gates, but since the other side of the gate is a nightmarish maze of darkness his job is fairly pointless as nobody ever goes to the gate other than the rare maintenance workers.
How can I help you?
Sector 19? That place is fucked man, nobody’s been there since those creeps flooded in from Maint’nence 16.
Ah no shit, I’ll radio Freddie and let him know you’re going out the security gate.
Eli is the main political manager of the governor's office and runs his daily schedule, making sure the status quo stays in place around the office.
Oh come on. This is ridiculous, you’ve just been trying to avoid this subject.
Fine. If you say so.
[on way out of room] Gentlemen.
A background character who runs a shop. Since the city's supplies are all sourced from centralized warehouses the rich elites control the flow of supplies, so he/she is fairly agitated by the random shortages of things to stock their shelves with.
No, we’re also out of canned peas.
Yeah. and there isn’t any, and no I can’t order anymore.
You know; they’re saying we might even run out of light bulbs next month
who cares about work, the pay is so shit you can’t even afford to live anymore
The secretary is the manager of who gets in and out of the Government building.
Take the elevator on the left please.
Yes, (cautiously) can I uh help you?
why don’t we just go inside? We rent the building out for a reason.
that’s a good point. Maybe someone’s in on it who comes to meetings, what was that new guy’s name again?
oh hello detective. We were um, just headed home.
The generic lines for background NPCs.
I don’t think it matters, my opinion is that someone outside our sphere is listening in on us from the outside
Who knows, maybe they’re out living life uptown and didn’t want to upset us with the details of whatever job can get a guy out of this neighbourhood.
sometimes, but it's best not to talk about it here. We should find someplace private, away from prying ears.

yep, you’d know if you didn’t spend all day in that damn shack you call a room.
well at least you have a room. Jimmy’s boy lost his job, couldn’t pay the rent.
Makes your blood go cold thinking about it.

why’d you drag us out here again?
hell, I don't like it either but our neighborhood is still littered with the stuff.
I'm not looking forward to getting back on the train to slum town.
The generic lines for background NPCs.
Yeah, it means we get a bunch of free shit and a free punch at the man!
The generic lines for background NPCs.

The generic lines for background NPCs.
Hey! Who’re you?
Hey keep it down
I might’ve. Honestly I don’t remember and can’t be bothered to care.
The generic lines for background NPCs.
Kill him!
What is this place?
yeah well you live in a dump, here they have the influence to not care about things like that
The generic lines for background NPCs.
Finally, after what? 2 years? Fuckin finally
Rick! This guy wanted to talk with you, says he’s clean.
Well I do like the idea of never busting my back again, those fuckers will get whats coming to them.
The generic lines for background NPCs.
Well you’re in luck then, Governor’s Heights is straight ahead if you take the tunnels down, it should be a straight shot since we’ve blocked off all the other branches.
Shit! We don’t have the men for this!
Hey who’s there?
The generic lines for background NPCs.
They’re trying to turn the power off?
The goners have been shifting around the tunnels lately, somethings spooking them into coming closer to our security gates.
Any way good luck on whatever it is you’re doing.

Under the Clarence administration, (struggling to breathe), my duties were to over see the kidnappings of citizens deemed a risk to public morale of the american people

The generic lines for background NPCs.

You made it!
The generic lines for background NPCs.

The generic lines for background NPCs.
