Project Overview

Welcome to the project! Before you proceed, be aware that continuing to the description and lines offered here WILL SPOIL parts of both TGAA and Resolve!

Dear Rabbit is a fanfic for the romantic pairing of Benjamin and Barok from The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. I have been writing it on Ao3 and it has truly captured my heart while working on it. I decided early on to format it as a "proper" novel, full of characters' handwriting and documents and perhaps drawings, and couldn't resist the idea of making an audiobook out of it as well.

Chapter Length and General Expectations:

Each chapter is aiming to be ~5.5k words. Final estimates place the total fic ~82.5k words. Based on the average reading speed aloud, this would estimate out to a total of 7.5 hours. Barok will have a MUCH higher amount of reading time as this actor will also be the narrator.

The recorded chapters will be compiled and stored on File Garden and on a YouTube playlist that will be linked on the primary fanfic webpages.

Participants will gain full access to the Dear Rabbit drafts and notes and will be encouraged-- but not required-- to provide feedback.

Deadlines:

This project is entirely for fun and on no strict deadline. Chapters will be recorded as they're released. The general goal is at least two a month for chapter publications. Even so, recording for your lines must not fall more than three published chapters behind. As of publishing the project, chapters 1 - 2 of 15 have been released. Chapter 3 is releasing later this week.

Requirements:

  • Almost every character present has an English accent of some kind. Assume this unless otherwise specified.

  • Discord is required for ease of communication. A server will be made to organize.

  • Microphone quality must be clear with little to no background noise or fuzz.

  • There are no prior experience requirements.

  • You must be 18+. While I do not plan for this fanfic to have heavily sexual content, it thoroughly discusses mature topics and is marked as rated M on Ao3 for this reason. PLEASE read the Ao3 tags at the very least and be comfortable with the content therein-- that is your responsibility.

  • Most specific accents will be preferred but not necessary. Lines are expected to be read phonetically.

  • I do not want you to mimic the canon voices for the characters-- please voice them how YOU would like to!

  • Please note that this project WILL FULLY SPOIL TGAAC. I expect auditioners have seen the story to its end for full context of their roles OR be 100% comfortable with having it all spoiled.

Payment:

Rates are still being adjusted. As this project will not be making any money of its own, please understand they will not be high rates. Barok and Benjamin will be hourly as I cannot estimate how much time they will need whereas the supporting cast will be flat rate. I'm estimating, and listing for posting's sake, $15 USD/hour. This is the minimum I'll go. For the side characters, I will be shooting for $20 flat as I'm more confident they will not need more than an hour of work. If they do, we will discuss at that time. Payment will be done through PayPal, Venmo, CashApp, or  Ko-fi.

Some Side Notes:

  • I use a merged language variant of Benjamin's name in this fic: Benjamin Harebrayne [rather than Benjamin Dobinbough in the fantranslation or Albert Harebrayne in the official]. There is a general non-uniformity to if I choose the fantranslated or official names.

  • Other ships are present either as past relationships or as current ones-- AsoRyuu [Kazuma Asougi/Ryuunosuke Naruhodou], VanLock [Sherlock Holmes/Barok Van Zieks], and RyuuLock [Sherlock Holmes/Ryuunosuke Naruhodou], etc. may be included. While not a focus, they will be relevant.

  • While I'm trying to make most of the audition lines dialogue from the fic, some characters have not had enough speaking time or have yet to be introduced. In that case, I've either pulled lines from the games or spitballed, so don't assume they're canon.

  • Final Casting

    Hello hello my friends! Wow! What a turnout, I can’t quite believe it. I am honored so many of you have put yourselves out there for Dear Rabbit. I sincerely thank all of you. 🧡

    I will be going through auditions over the next few days and picking out final cast members. Some folks may be offered alternative roles than what they auditioned for! This may take some time as I’m just getting over a small bout of illness and have some affairs to tend to over the weekend.

  • Round One of Casting

    And what choices we have so far! Wow!! Over the next five days, I will begin to cast roles— after that if I’m not sure about a role, it will advance to round two when I extend the casting call. Fret not if you aren’t picked immediately! Some roles either have more auditions overall or I’m more torn between a few. I may not cast you at first but will later.

    As for those I do not pick— I cannot thank you enough for even considering this project. I haven’t really let myself have fun in fandom despite being in so many for years and it’s very touching that folks find my silly little ship project interesting enough to audition.   • “Klint will be arriving sometime after noon. He was called to the prosecutor’s office at the last moment.” We had made sure to arrive as early in the morning as we could in anticipation of delays but it served no end when he was harried back into the office by the chief prosecutor. I had only met the man a few brief times since my studies began in earnest. He was incredibly dedicated; I admired it as much. Though, it did lead to this somewhat unfortunate circumstance.

  • 'God, I must admit, the way the man converses is drying to no end.' I folded my arms. “It matters not whether we have any rapport as long as we complete our duties. He is a well-mannered and capable man. He completes all tasks with due diligence and efficiency. He will learn and I will teach. Beyond that, our relations are superficial at best.” 'Let us not discuss the risk of duel that haunts my office.' The thought was a bitterly amusing one.

  • I have wielded everything from a rapier to a wine glass, a pen to a prosecutor’s badge. All used as weapons nonetheless. I have learned to turn the harmless into the harrowing. As the ink began to build the image of a man less than violent, I winced at the thought it might become so.

That it was an accident? Can he really protect the machine??"

  • (Explode with audacity! Go big and have fun!) "That’s horrendous!! That’s a fate worse than death I tell you! Do you know how hard it is to get some of those things?? Albemics and calcinators must be handmade by glassblowers from Germany, France, or Spain, they cannot be mass-produced, and-and they are far from cheap let me tell you! Do you even know what it cost for me to have a set shipped across the strait??”

  • (Starts bright, settles and becomes sarcastic at the end.) “Ah, yes, well! Stronghart was called to a meeting and Mr. Whitlock was determined not to talk to me anyway. Tch, and you know how Counselor Knight can be. I’m *quite* looking forward to it."

  • (Exasperated, if a bit amused.) “For God’s sake, man. *Lift him.* Don’t make Mr. Benjamin try to balance on top of a saddle, Barok, he about fell over when I shook his hand earlier. Best just to lift him off yourself. You’ll fare better with the angle in any case.”

  • (Auditioner's read.) ‘You’re doing it wrong, Barok! Lord, we’re going to be late. Come here, I’ll fix it for you. My foolish little brother, ahah, ohhh, how did you ever get into law school... I’m proud of you, you know. I haven’t been very good at telling you that, have I? I am, though. You cannot imagine just how proud I am… You’re going to be brilliant out there. I’ll be in the gallery of your first trial, of course, and I promise not to cheer! Ahahmhmhm… There you go. Good man. Now hurry, lest we keep the dear girl waiting! Her name is Lady Baskerville…'

The man leading the Fox Collective (a play on Guy Fawkes. They are a small Professor-inspired revolutionary cell) is one Gallagher Knight, Irishman. His name is a play on “gelignite”-- the scientific term for blasting jelly. He is sometimes called Fox and other nicknames by his men. They know who he is and would rather die than give up his identity. He is the man who first attacks Barok post-Professor before he was involved with the Collective.


By day, he is a defense attorney who frequently butt heads with Klint when he was alive-- at least in public. He was born in 1851 in Ireland [TGAA age: 48], at the very end of the historically recorded Famine. He is a widow. His wife passed away a few months after childbirth and their son is developmentally delayed and cannot work, leaving Knight to support them both.


He has tried not to place blame on others (particularly the English and their aristocracy) for his strife. However, growing up amidst the horrors the Famine left has taken its toll. A more intimate relationship than thr public knew with Klint only made the Professor case more harrowing. He has Robin Hood-esque intentions, but his methods are proving to become stricter with time. His targeting of Barok is due to his belief that he killed Klint with the intent to use the following trial to become renowned. He has a philosophy that Nature is God's utmost tool.


Note this character has only briefly been introduced and some of these core values and personalities may be adjusted.
