Danganronpa: SINGLEFILE Visual Novel
Project Overview
Plot
Twelve Ultimate-level students arrive at Hope's Valley Military Academy to serve as its founding class in a new program devised by society's brightest minds. The training's objective is noble: to create Ultimates capable of resisting the Killing Games, rooting out Agents of Despair, and surviving to carry on those techniques.
Victor Leeds, the Ultimate Researcher, enters into the game, only to be presented with a mind-bending twist right out the gate from his closest subordinate: that he's the creator of the game, he's given himself partial amnesia, and most bizarre, that all of the other participants are automatons created in his own laboratory!
Who can Victor trust? For that matter, can he even trust himself?
The arrival of Atarukuma-- a familiar bear redressed in soldier camouflage- signals the start of a new Killing Game! This Killing Game could have the lowest stakes in history, or it could mean the end of all of humanity's brightest minds in one fell swoop, heralding in a new age of Despair!
About the project
SINGLEFILE is an upcoming visual novel, created in Ren'py ( https://www.renpy.org/ ), that is based on-- but not affiliated with-- Spike Chunsoft's Danganronpa series. As such, it is completely not-for-profit, although I would like to incentivize these voice roles as much as I can! It's just me investing into a hobby of mine. The writing, art assets, and visual novel work is all being done by me. For updates on the project, check here: https://twitter.com/i/events/1427983991928500234 . I am currently working towards a demo of the prologue! It's gonna be slow going.
What do I need from you?
I'm looking for voice actors to contribute small amounts of lines that can be used in the context of cut-ins. For example, the character may appear with a scream when they're alarmed, or might say something like a catchphrase. Here's an example of how they appear in Danganronpa, I will be hoping to match these tonally: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvIcexa5QW0 . You'll need the following:
1) A decent microphone quality and a recording free of background noise.
2) A Discord account so that we can communicate, at least until the recordings are all submitted.
3) Requested voice clips submitted in MP3 format.
4) A retake or two upon request.
The auditions will consist of three line submissions. The actual number I request will be more like 5-6 per character (including the original three, if those are presented to me in a good mp3 format), but nothing like the number you'd expect from a full Danganronpa game. I can't promise there would be any more to come past this first spurt!
You can submit for multiple parts if you'd like to. I especially encourage you to do so if you can modify your speech pattern enough for more than one!
What will you get?
You'll get a one-time payment of $10 for the full set of voices mentioned above. You'll also get your name listed in the credits (under the handle of your choosing), available in the "Credits" tab of the distributed visual novel. If I'm showing the character's name in a lineup, I'll also list your voice under their name! If at any time something should happen and I were to need to replace you (say, the scope of the project increases and you're not up for new voice acting), then I would maintain your chosen handle in the credits as one of the contributors!
About me
I'm a long-time hobby-level artist who loves Danganronpa, loves visual novels and has always wanted to make his own murder mystery! This is just a passion project of mine. Right now, I'm juggling art, VTubing, and making this visual novel, so my attention will be pretty divided, but I'm always on Discord and I'd be happy to discuss this project with you! As a side note, I am not currently looking to contribute as artist or writer for other projects. Find out more about me here: https://aimvtuber.carrd.co/

Thanks and general feedback
Hey all! Thanks for all the amazing submissions. Working with voice actors is new for me and I'm blown away by what everyone's capable of! I wanted to provide some general feedback that may help you gear an audition for best performance on this project. In general, my favorite auditions are those that have a loud volume and quick, punchy versions of the phrases. These aspects help me to easily envision slotting them into my project as cut-ins-- the short clips that people will hear when the character displays a certain emotion. If it's a quiet submission, even if you could fix that in second takes, it does make it hard to picture using it compared to a louder, clearer one. For maximum chance of receiving the role, I'd recommend making sure your voice is decently loud (you can test this by comparing the output chart that accompanies submissions here with others) and that phrases are spoken with minimal pauses. Envision a scenario where not every player is taking the time to read carefully and might instead be thumbing through the novel at high speed; we'd like to keep the voices short so that the player is not hearing the voices overlap too much. I wouldn't hold this as a rule for the intro lines, as those can only be kept so short and will only be heard once, but more for the lines for "yes," "no," fear, etc. Thanks again for everybody's hard work. On the 14th, I'll begin reaching out on discord to lock in some roles! If you're curious about updates from my end, I'm currently working on redoing many of the character expression portraits to include more movement and gestures, along with thick black borders. I hope to have more to show soon!
I'd originally imagined him with a British accent, but as long as it's English, feel free to audition! This is the main character. He's got some noble aspects, but he's also very proud of himself and egocentric. Sometimes, he acts a bit below his age. Rather than your typical Danganronpa protagonist, he is very self-assured and short-tempered.
"I am the Ultimate Researcher. It's my duty to study the Killing Games and ultimately end them." - Proud, cool, clear and even speech
"Hm hm hm!" - cocky, egotistic laugh, more full of himself than smooth. You can try another type of laugh too, as long as it's cocky!
"Now see here!" - indignant, frustrated, short-tempered
Maya is gruff but competent, with a cold, clinical, self-assured attitude. Ideally, I'd like a deep, female voice. It's more important that she sound tough than feminine.
"I am the Ultimate Research Assistant... but that doesn't make you my superior." - begrudging and cold, showing disdain for Victor
"Ha ha ha..." - mean-spirited laughter, biting, and a little dark
"Don't be an idiot" - in a grumpy, impatient tone
If you know how Sandy Cheeks from Spongebob sounds, that's basically what we need! She's a tough-talking firecracker with a Texan accent.
"I'm the Ultimate Drill Sergeant! If I can't whip ya'll in to shape, nobody can!" - confident, noisy, a little overbearing
"You maggot!" - loud, unnecessarily harsh, with all the anger you can summon without breaking your sound quality!
"Darn-tootin'!" - cheerful and likeable, in stark contrast to her drill-instructor tone
For this guy, I'm picturing a voice somewhere between Flapjack and Spongebob Squarepants. You could also look to Mickey Mouse as an influence! The idea is as silly and cartoony as you can be!
"Say 'ahoy' to the Ultimate Mariner! You can count on me!" - cartoonishly cheerful with a cadence like he's snapping a salute
A cartoony, Mickey mouse style laugh, like "Ah ha ha!" Get silly with it!
A panicked, gurgling noise, like "Blurb-blurb-blurb-blurb." Have fun with it!
Hoyt is Skip's older brother, but he doesn't talk anything like Skip. For this role, just try to go kinda cool, Tom Cruise, Top Gun.
"I'm the Ultimate Pilot. I'm not looking to make friends here, okay?" - standoffish, like a punk who thinks he's too cool for everyone
"You got it." - cool, reliable, to the point
"Screw that!" - disbelieving, more nervous than he's letting on
Self-absorbed and boasting when nothing's on the line, but cowardly when the chips are down, he's the protypical unreliable know-it-all. Half annoying, half comedy, you don't need to worry about making his voice sound cool-- this is your chance to be a jerk!
"You're in the presence of the Ultimate Peacebroker! Nobody's dying on my watch!" - ridiculously cocky and annoying, tons of ego
"Mmmm-wah!" an exaggerated puckering and kissing noise for kissing his prized medallion
"You're joking, right?" stuttering with nervousness
She's got a voice like a comic book super-heroine, but she's really looking out for number one. Her reactions are all over-the-top and noisy. She's a good character when you need somebody to yell in shock at a surprising twist.
"I'm the Ultimate Escape Artist, and I guarantee you I'm going to survive!" - Emphasis on the "I'm", she's cocky and arrogant with a very loud mouth
"Baaa ha ha ha ha ha!" - a super noisy laugh, a bit like an overdone, hammy super-hero
"Eeeeeeh?!" - loud and shocked, sort of comedic and exaggerated
Li-Qing is a musclehead who's always hungry for violence; her voice is hot-blooded. I'd love to have a Chinese accent for this role, but feel free to submit even if you don't have one. The violence is more important!
"I may be the Ultimate Sharpshooter, but I can easily kill you without a firearm!" - threatening, forceful, a scary lady
"Discipline!" - an aggravated, barking order, demanding greater discipline
"Superb!" - congratulatory with a bit of a laugh in the voice.
Seemingly kind and cute, but with a predilection towards collecting people's private information. Her voice is nerdy and trends towards creepy when she laughs, sly and full of conspiracy. Basically, her voice sounds untrustworthy.
"I'm the Ultimate Comms Officer. Feel free to tell me anything, he he he he..." - nerdy, cute, but trailing into a little creepy, almost drooling with anticipation during the laughter
"Confirmed!" - cheerful, snappy, kind of cute
"Did I hear that right?! - babbling, nervous, not composed
Kobe's voice is deep and most of his lines should be delivered like a battle anime character. If you think of any deep-voiced anime character and go for that, you really can't go wrong! I believe Dong Zhuo in the English dub of Dynasty Warriors is pretty close to what I'm looking for.
"Good to meet you. I'm the Ultimate Provisioner. Leave everything to me!" - stern but trustworthy sounding, deep, strong
"Bon Appetit!" - forceful, almost like shouting out an attack
"Rrr, no way!" - frustrated, confused, rumbling on the "rrr"
I'd love it if we could get the sound of speaking through a gas mask for this, either through a filter you apply or actually through a mask. If you can't make that work, you can try to do a Bane voice, maybe! Despite his good manners, he's a creepy, breathy-sounding guy.
"I'm known as the Ultimate Survival Prepper. Charmed to meet you!" - pleasant, gentlemantly, ideally spoken muffled, like through a gas mask
"Terribly sorry." - apologetic, also muffled, ideally through a gas mask
*a really creepy breathing noise, like just heavy, spooky, stalker breathing... three long breaths*
Zaydee is a mysterious character with a sort of androgynous voice, ideally somewhere between a cool lady and a feminine guy. She is fairly quiet-spoken and despite being so suspicious, she's supposed to be overtly polite compared to the others.
"I am the Ultimate Spymaster. Pleased to make your acquaintance." - Polite, likeable, genuine
"My, my!" - laughing, cheerful, but also a little diminutive
"I think not." - sighing, disappointed
