Company Phantasmagoria

Company Phantasmagoria

Project Overview

This project is a concept-trailer of a visual novel, which will be my capstone final project for my art degree. Being as such, I have a firm deadline I’ll need selected actors to submit their finished lines by: February 27th. (Most of the characters only have a couple lines). I’m also looking for a music composer for the score, deadline for that submission is March 13th.

My story is called Company Phantasmagoria, I’ve taken several film classes and during one of them I learned about early film and pre-film techniques—and the phantasmagoria horror theater gimmick really grabbed me. It’s essentially where you project scary images like creatures onto the wall of the theater during a show via a magic lantern.

So CompPhan takes that idea and pushes “horror theater” into proper early filmmaking. It’s set in 1913 in London England, with a group of people who put on short horror themed films, stageplays, and other performances. (Variety shows were popular back in the day since films were short and often limited to 7-10 minute reels).

The key story: We follow the main character Jun who’s a silent film narrator from Japan (Benshi) as the company hires him, shipping him in to be a part of their show.

In this trailer, we get to see him set up what I’ve just explained, meet Vespera the director, and quickly introduce the rest of the cast. Setting will be established, some implied gameplay, and then some key narrative dialogue will play with a fun and intense crescendo.

Implied but not included explicitly included in the trailer project:

Gameplay would follow the company putting on a few shows (played out like ace attorney case chapters). There’d be point and click gameplay and well as a few mini games.

Narratively the story deals with class inequality, and the juxtaposition of being “different” (neurodivergency, queerness, disability, orientalism, etc) viewed as an entertainment novelty versus it viewed as social deviant outside of its “controlled context”. [The precedent of this being Freak Shows of the time, a-la P.T. Barnum].

As such, many of the characters in my story are queer, Apolline is trans, Oona is mute (is not shown in a role here for obvious reasons), Oomie is adhd, etc.

Thank you so much for your interest in my project!

LOOKING FOR AMATEUR COMPOSER FOR A 4-5 MINUTE SCORE:

  • This is for a trailer for a class project, so I’m looking for someone happy to work with my limited budget <3
  • My rough runtime is about 4:45
  • Completed track submission deadline is firm for March 13th. As I’ll need time to mix in the voice lines.
  • The story’s setting is Edwardian London (1913), at a theater that puts on Horror variety shows (films, live performance, etc).
  • Vibe: String instruments and piano are a must. Some inspirations include Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns, The Great Ace Attorney soundtrack, Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure soundtrack, Mascarade - Ballet Suite: 1 Waltz, and Waltz for the Dead Clown by Hakdo.
  • Composition will have a lot of push and pull to allow for voice acting/narration. Think flowery intro, mellow beginning, spunky but not overly complicated in the middle for character introductions, and ends with an intense and “horror” feeling crescendo. Timed out storyboard will be provided, including rough (me) voice acting placeholders while VA tracks come in.
  • I will be working in adobe audition so it’s preferred, but Im sure there are more preferred music production software for folks so—I just need to see the track to verify and to receive a .wav file of it.
  • Thank you so much for your interest!
