The morning after the defeat at Ai,Joshua gathered all the Israelites before the lord.god revealed that it was achan. Achan then confessed that he has stolen some things from Jericho and had hid them under his tent. Joshua took the things achan stole,and took achan,his family,and his livestock to the valley of achor,where he stoned them to death and burnt them,it may seem that the punishment was severe,but it shows clearly that the sin of achan was great.

God knew that achan was the sinner but he gathered all the Israelites together and called forward from tribe,clan,family,and finally to man.he did this so that the whole of Israel would took at themselves and realized the seriousness of sin.

After the sin of achan has been handled,god encouraged Joshua and ordered him to attack Ai again. Unlike the first battle,this time Joshua ordered thirty five thousand men to set up a ambush behind the city and between bethel and Ai then,Joshua and the remaining men marched towards ai when the battle began,Joshua pretended to retreat, and the people of ai and bethel chased the Israelites,leaving their city gates open.
