About The Game:
Apartment No.9 is a free visual novel game I made as part of a team for Otome Jam 2021. I thought it would be fun to make an alternate version where the protagonist is male and the love interests are female. The game is inspired by a script from the anthology TV series 'Inside No.9' by Steve Pemberton & Reece Shearsmith. It is a dark story about a teacher suffering with depression whose life is turned upside down when the homeless person he often stares out of his window at turns up at his door, claiming to have found his wallet. You can find the finished otome version here! Sadly, this version won't feature CGs unless I can find an artist who fancies helping out with the project, and the resolution will need to be a little lower because I'm using sprites made with a generator rather than having a sprite artist this time around.
Deadlines:
Since the jam is now over, there are no strict deadlines. However, I would like to have this version of the game finished and released by the end of summer. For that reason, if a particular audition just fits the role perfectly, I will likely cast before the casting call end date. I've already tweaked the scripts to better suit this version, and am working on putting the game together with the alternate sprites. I have a few different projects on the go at the moment, so I don't want to wind up taking too long on this one.
Content Warnings & Triggers:
Please note that the game contains some relatively tame foreplay + dirty talk scenes - (players can avoid these scenes with choices), bad language, mental abuse, and suicide.
Other Notes:
Akuji has already been cast, which is why she's not appearing on this casting call. I may update this with other characters.
I'm primarily a visual novel solo dev, but I started working with voice actors on my very first project, hoping to have all of my projects voiced. I'm a huge fan of English language voice acting and would love to see more of it in the visual novel genre, especially when it comes to indie games. I enjoy creating games for game jams, though I also have long-term projects on the go. I've never had much money in my life, so most of my projects are for fun, but I do hope to get enough funding someday to be able to pay voice actors properly for their time and talent :3

About Rue:
Rue is the protagonist of the game. He is a primary school teacher in his mid-late twenties who longs to become a professional writer. His girlfriend, Akuji, is the sunshine in his life, the only one who he can be truly comfortable around. Rue has a habit of turning to drink when life gets him down. He's fairly unsociable, down-to-earth, feisty, sarcastic, and a bit of a bookworm. Most of his days consist of endless marking, or more accurately, staring out of his apartment window at the homeless girl on the street.
"Do you have to keep doing that? I swear one day you're gonna forget to catch me, then I'll end up flat on my face, and you'll get a kick in the cooch!" |
"It's not a fantasy, Aku! You know how much this means to me. I don't care if I have to live on the streets myself; this is what I want!" |
"We've been cut off. I'm sorry, Aku. I miss you so much – everything's going wrong." |

About Perry:
Perry is a mysterious homeless girl living on the streets below Rue's apartment. She is one of the love interests alongside Akuji, Rue's girlfriend. Perry is an intelligent, manipulative, incredibly lonely individual. She adores Rue, thinking that the two of them are destined to be together. While Perry would do anything for Rue, she doesn't always show her love in the healthiest of ways, opting to deceive him over being truthful.
"I'm just saying, with you so vulnerable, it'd be pretty easy to get away with robbing you blind, or maybe snooping through your stuff to reveal all your secrets. Perhaps I could just do whatever I want with you... Take your pick." |
“No one else will ever see you, speak to you, touch, or even smell you.” |
“I am so, so sorry. For everything. I should've seen this coming, but I-I was blinded by my own desires. So much so that I didn't even realise just how badly you were suffering.” |
The doctor is an unnamed male who holds a conversation with Doyle. He is a friendly and professional individual.
"You're most welcome. I can tell how much he means to you. He's very fortunate indeed to have someone like you looking after him." |
"I'll be back tomorrow to check on you both. In the meantime, don't forget there's free coffee just down the hall." |
the female doctor is a kind, caring, and professional individual attending to Rue.
These are all of the female doctor's lines, so rather than casting and sending out a script, it would probably be easier to just use the most suitable audition takes. If someone auditions who sounds right for the part, I will just close the role, cast that person, and ask how they would like to be credited.
Doctor: (Upbeat, kind) |
Doctor: (Concerned, sceptical) |
Doctor: (Friendly, caring) |
