A Gamble of Paintings and Poison (Fantasy Audio Drama)

A Gamble of Paintings and Poison (Fantasy Audio Drama)

Project Overview

Maggie dreams of adventure, the kind her globe-trotting older sister makes a living blogging about. But she's not brave enough to tell her parents she wants to study art not business, let alone drop out of college and start traveling the world. She'll have to settle for finding adventure in her favorite video game, until that adventure becomes much more real than she bargained for...

Elle dreams of everything staying just how it is. She and her best friend since kindergarten are now roommates in college. Once they graduate they'll get an apartment together, probably in the same city they've lived in their whole lives. But then Maggie vanishes without a trace, and the only theory Elle has about her whereabouts is surely impossible...

Kindle dreams of change, whatever that may be. Just so long as the Abandoned Order breaks out of the stagnated state it's occupied since Lydia took control. What was once a symbol of hope among the magical creatures of the Shadow Realm has become nearly as oppressive as the human kingdom they wish to thwart. When a strange human girl drops into his life, the change Kindle hopes for finally seems possible. But is the rest of the Abandoned Order ready, or even willing?

_________

This is a multi-chapter audio drama project.  A Gamble of Paintings and Poison is the first in a series of three fantasy/adventure/romance novels, and my goal is to create a fully voiced version of the story. If you plan to audition, especially for a major role, be aware that this is a long-term commitment, as I would prefer to keep the same voices for all the characters throughout the course of the project.

This will be an on-going project, with bi-monthly (at least) chapter audios posted on Youtube, SoundCloud, and Wattpad.

If I have a specific sound in mind for a character's voice, it will be mentioned in their bio. Otherwise, feel free to try whatever you think might fit with the character. If you would like to submit multiple takes with different voices, that's fine.

There are several bit parts (nameless roles with only one or two lines) throughout the project that will be cast to main actors who are able to change their voice enough to sound like a different person.

Your microphone must be good quality with no pops or background noise. You must have or be willing to download Telegram or Discord for communication purposes if you are cast.

Please PM me if you have any questions, would like to know more about a character, or would like to read the first three chapters of the book.

As of right now this is a passion project and no money is being made off of it. However my goal is to eventually build up a Patreon, and if that happens all voice actors will be paid for their work.

As the story progresses and more central characters are introduced, there will be a second round of auditions posted for those roles.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Anything listed as "Bonus Points" is just that, bonus. It is not a requirement, and while it is preferred, you can still be cast without it.

(Pictures of all the characters will be included before auditions close, Just waiting for my artist to finalize colors.)

Latest Updates

  • First Episode (for anyone interested!)

https://m.soundcloud.com/rappy-dinosaur-71498083/through-the-door-book-one-level-one Here is the link to the first episode, for anyone who wants to check it out! Also stay tuned for future updates, I'll be looking to fill some minor roles soon :)
  • EMERGENCY RECASTING

Hey there! Our VA for Seraphim had to resign suddenly, so I'm reopening auditions for that role. If you auditioned for Seraphim, I may be in touch with you to find out your interest level.
  • AUDITIONS CLOSED!

Thank you so so much to everyone who has auditioned, and congratulations (again) to all of those cast. If you really want to be involved but weren't cast, don't worry, I'll be back to cast roles for the second half of the book soon! The first episode airs June 15th, and I'll be posting a link here if you'd like to follow along :)
  • Order Changed Again, More Detail Added To Faye

First off I would like to say I am thrilled and pleased with the amount and quality of the auditions I've received for this project. We still have roughly two weeks before auditions close officially, but I've pretty much made my decision on every role except for Faye. I changed the order again to put her at the top, and added a bit more info to her bio detailing the kind of voice I'm looking for. Despite being a smaller role than the main three, Faye is a recurring character and almost unanimously the reader favorite when I last took a poll, so she's definitely worth auditioning for. Thank you all again for your auditions! :)
  • Deadline Moved Up, Order Changed

I moved the deadline to the end of the month instead of the first week in June because I have a sufficient amount of auditions for most of the roles already, and would like to start making final decisions on the cast. I changed the order of the audition page to put Elle and Faye at the top, since they only have one audition each, and I need more for them before i feel comfortable choosing. So please, if you know any talented female voice actors who might be interested in a project like this, please send them my way. I would be very grateful :)

Magdalyn Rose Darrow is a 20 year old college student and the central character of this novel. She is introverted, artistic, and has a dry, self-deprecating sense of humor. She is nothing special, and she knows it. Maggie tends to keep to herself, but is able to be immature and silly around those she's formed a bond with. As far as a voice I have in mind, something more in an alto range, like Veronica Sawyer from Heathers. (Update: Especially considering how deep a voice our lovely Kindle has. As the main pair of the project they do a lot of interacting, and it's important that their voices are pleasing to listen to when conversing.) Important to keep in mind: As the main character, Maggie has a disproportionately large amount of lines. You will need to be willing to be on board for all three books, and act thousands of words worth of narration. If I like your audition and am considering you for the role, I will PM you to do a test reading of about half a chapter.

  • (Narrating) Sometimes I wished I had hair like hers, all shiny and slick and manageable. My natural blonde was such a sandy, dull shade, and the waves made it impossible to deal with in humidity. I wasn't brave enough to dye it, so I settled for being jealous and whiny— I had a lot of practice with that.

  • (Overdramatic and joking.) "No, you're actually the worst. You have broken my heart. You dangled the string of hope in my face, only to yank it back and look on, uncaring, as I suffer.”

  • (Angry, loud) "Ridiculous? This woman claims to be a mermaid and I'm somehow the ridiculous one?"

Role assigned to: Ace Corsaira

Estelle Marie Carter is 19 years old, Maggie's best friend since elementary school, and the second of three lead characters. She's a tech-wiz, Computer Programming major. She's fast talking, sharp-witted, and the source of a majority of the humorous dialogue in the story. She also studies Krav Maga and could murder you with a pen cap. Important to keep in mind: As a main character, Elle has a large amount of lines. You will need to be willing to be on board for all three books, and act thousands of words worth of narration. If I like your audition and am considering you for the role, I will PM you to do a test reading of about half a chapter.

  • (Narrating) I’m keeping it together, I lied. I need to focus on school, I lied. I don't want to be home right now. That, at least, was true. I needed to stay here and find Mags. If I went home I would absolutely sink into some sort of helpless depression. That would be of no use to anyone.

  • (Joking... or is she?) "Sick. I've always wanted to fight a government official."

  • (Angry, sad) “It’s fake,” I repeated. “It’s from a video game. And you’re drunk or high or mocking me, and I don’t appreciate it.”

Kindle (Last name? He's not telling.)

Role assigned to: ALevel1Bard

Kindle is the mysterious male protagonist and Maggie's love interest. He's 23 years old and has been through way more crap than a guy his age should have. He's tired and easily annoyed, and it doesn't help that his best friend has a habit of getting herself into ridiculous situations and needing him to bail her out. He's guarded, but kind at heart, and has an extremely deadpan sense of humor. I have no preferences for what he sounds like, as long as it fits with his look. Important to keep in mind: As a main character, Kindle has a large amount of lines. You will need to be willing to be on board for all three books, and act thousands of words worth of narration. If I like your audition and am considering you for the role, I will PM you to do a test reading of about half a chapter.

Bonus Points (though not required): Give him an accent of some sort, whatever you feel strongest with.

  • (Narrating) The look on Maggie’s face reminded me of myself at my lowest point. It’s something I didn’t particularly want to be reminded of. I considered leaving. Faye could keep her human, I would ensure that Lydia never found out, but I wanted no further involvement.

  • (Exasperated) “Of course not. Lydia’s been looking for an excuse to kill you for years, and now you’ve got a perfect one sleeping in your bed!”

  • “I haven’t had much interaction with humans who didn’t have helmets over their faces.”

Lydia D'Norse

Role assigned to: senforza

Lydia Chrisanthus D'Norse is the 17 year old Queen of the Abandoned Order. She is the main villain and a master manipulator. She knows exactly how to twist people to get what she wants, and when that doesn't seem like an option... she has no problem disposing of those who oppose her. Her speech tends to be sickly sweet and over dramatic, and she finds joy in tormenting those who she deems beneath her (that's most people.) She is very short and petite, and though she tries to make up for that by speaking loudly and wearing voluminous ball gowns, her voice is naturally more high pitched and child like. Lydia is a central character to the story and a narrator in the final book, as such she is as big a commitment as Maggie, Elle, and Kindle. Keep that in mind when auditioning.

BONUS POINTS: Give her an accent. (French or British preferred, but I'm open to others)

  • (Mocking) "Oh, stop being so dramatic, will you?” (sigh) "I only gave you a tiny dose, not nearly enough to kill you. Just enough to remind you who you're dealing with.” (giggle) "The only side effects you may suffer are severe pain... from your annoying whimpering I'd say that's already hit... and maybe some hallucinations. No big deal, really."

  • (Angry, insistent shriek) "There is!” (pause, take a deep breath, continue in a forced gentle tone.) "There is. You have just become a... momentary distraction, that's all. Once you’re dealt with, he’ll come back to me, and everything will be as it should."

  • (Lydia as a six year old child in a flashback, try your best to sound like a little girl.) "I want my Daddy! He said he'd come for me when the war ended! He... he promised!"

Faye Talsin

Role assigned to: katastrofree

Faye is 26 years old, but a child at heart. She's the "team mom" so to speak, and sunshine incarnate. One would never guess from her cheerful disposition that Faye had a tragic past which still follows her to this day. She's a little scatterbrained, but she's genuine and well-meaning. She's a mermaid who hasn't seen the ocean in ten years. Faye is Kindle's best friend, and works as a seamstress. She's happy, upbeat, and cheerful in her tone, but with a voice that's still gentle and pleasing to listen to.

Think if Toriel from Undertale drank four or five espresso shots in one go.

BONUS POINTS: Give her an accent of some sort. Any you feel comfortable with, but preferably not British.

  • (Giggling, excited.) “Aw, she’s so cute. And her eyes are green, isn’t that interesting? Have you ever seen a human with green eyes?”

  • (Motherly) “Kindle be careful doing that, I have matches. You shouldn’t overwork yourself.”

  • (Concerned) “She’s sad, like I said. She cries a lot. And asks for her ‘phone’ or my ‘phone’ or a ‘phone’ in general. She asks what ‘state’ we’re in— and apparently confusion is not a proper answer?” *sigh* “After a while of that, she just rolls over and stares at the wall. She stays like that all day.”

Marcellus Villiers

Role assigned to: lemurlord

Marcellus is 20 years old, flirty, cocky, self-assured... and entirely out of his element. As the younger brother of Seraphim Villiers, King of the Abandoned Order, Marcellus is used to getting everything he wants. Now he's stuck in a world where he doesn't even know how the lighting works (electricity? what is that??), and his only hope of getting home is a crazy girl who introduced herself by kicking him in the gut.

BONUS POINTS: Give him a British accent.

  • (Scared and confused. He's on the ground and Elle has him pinned with her foot.) “I am Marcellus Villiers, of Samsara in Aeterna. I came here through a door, but the door is gone now, and this world is strange— ah, please remove your foot!—“

  • "I do not know how to get back, believe me I have tried everything." *pause* "Please, wait! Would you at least teach me how to operate this so-called 'vending machine?' I have not had a meal since my arrival here."

  • (flirtatious) "If you do not wish me to sleep in that bed... shall I share yours?" *snickers* "I was only joking, of course... but the offer is on the table."

Seraphim Villiers

cast offsite

Seraphim is the 25 year old king of the Abandoned Order. The best way to describe him would be a jaded, fallen hero… He sounds tired and bored every time he speaks, and that’s because he is. Everything he’s worked for and all the good he hoped to do seems further and further from his reach with every passing day. His wife, Lydia, has taken complete control of the Order, and he’s powerless under her spell. Seraphim is a minor antagonist for the first book, but then becomes a central hero as the story progresses.

BONUS POINTS: Give him a British accent.

  • (Maggie: "Kindle trusts me") (Laugh)"I bet he does, fool that he is." (Maggie: "How does that make him a fool?") "Because he is too compassionate. One should never let emotions dictate their judgment."

  • (Kindle: "Get away from her or so help me I'll--") “You’ll what? As the captain of my guard it is your job to defend me, Kindle. If you do anything to the contrary, I could have you executed for treason.” (Pressing a knife to Maggie's throat.) “Or I could kill her. Both options, I think, would have the same effect on you.”

  • (A flashback, Seraphim is 18 and ready to lead a revolution.) "It is thanks to the king we are here instead of home with the parents he slaughtered. It is thanks to him our homelands are in ruins!"

Jakoby Sesil

Role assigned to: cagethehamster

Jakoby is 18 years old and literally a snake in human form. And a snake in snake form. It's a shape-shifter thing. He is Lydia's spy, henchman, pet, whatever you want to call him. He kills when she says kill, and gets great joy from causing suffering in others. In snake form, his bite literally sucks the happiness out of others, dementor style. He's a cheerful and sadistic. He's also insane. He has a very light, singsongy voice and a habit of drawing his S's out like a snake. Warning, he's not a good dude. You'll have to say some pretty creepy things as him.

BONUS POINTS: Give him an accent. Any sort you are comfortable with.

  • "Faye Faye Faye Faye Faye Faye Faye.... you're in trouble now." (laughing and humming)

  •  (Shocked, amused cackle.) "Ahhh, what's this? A new friend? A human?" (creepy sniffing sound) "Mm your skin is lovely, I'll enjoy bruising it."

  • (Reverently) "Of course my queen, my goddess, I live only for you. Just give me a name and I will show them the meaning of agony."
