Portia's Call From Home

Portia's Call From Home

Project Overview

Portia's Call From Home is an audio drama series following PJ Jenkins, a college student studying for her master's in history. Her life is static. She wakes up, goes to work, goes to school, goes to sleep, and the cycle repeats. She doesn't know her identity or her purpose in life. In other words, she's like every other college student except for one thing. During her regular routine of events, she gets a call from out of this world begging for her to return home. Turns out she is actually an alien. Follow the events of PJ as she battles whether to stay on Earth or find a new life on another planet. With the support of her friends and her eccentric parents, she has a very difficult decisison to make.

PCFH is a comedy with angst and drama. It will be three episodes long ranging from 30 minutes to an hour. Each episode's script has a length of 6000-10,000 words this includes dialogue and stage directions. The final script, all episodes, is 22,000 words in total. It will be posted on YouTube.

Deadlines will be strict. Recording Due Dates:

EP 1: May 1 to 31

EP 2: June 1 to 30

EP 3: July 1 to 31

If you don't think you'll be able to record lines within a month, during these due dates, auditioning for this project will not work. My planned release is at the beginning of September and with these dates, I can accomplish that goal.

There is 1 main character, 6 side characters, and 5 roles for extras. If you're auditioning for the main character or any of the side characters, you must be 20+ due to some relationships between the characters. If you're an extra, you must be 18+. I'm looking for authentic voices that come off as real unless specified otherwise. There will be no need to change your accent to fit a role. Limit it to 2 takes per lines. Have a decent mic setup with minimal background noise. You can audition for as many roles as you want.

Leave contact info in case you are casted. You must be willing to make a discord account after you get casted.

If you have an issue with gender and LGBTQ+ themes, I suggest not to audition for this project.

Project Warnings: Swearing, sexual references, poking fun at real world problems, dark humor (never overtly offensive), depression, anxiety, insecurity.

Callbacks: I will try to post the cast list by Monday morning, after the deadline. If I'm really stuck on voices, I will do callbacks. I will contact my top voices to do a scene. I will send you the scene. I would like to do a 15 minute call (google meet, discord, etc) directing you in the scene during the second to last week of April from the 21st to the 26th. You do not have to be in your booth to do the callback, assuming you already did in the audition, I just want to hear your voice and delivery. Once callbacks are done, I will have it posted by Sunday night on April 27th. For now, do not worry about callbacks unless I put an update out that callbacks will be happening.

  • About The Creator

Hello! I wanted to create an update talking about who I am and my experience in projects. I am Ella Ladon. This is my first delve into the audio drama world, but this is not my first project. I have been filming and editing since elementary school. My major was focused in film and I had theatre as a minor. I've taken screenwriting, video production, tv production, and three film production classes. I have a YouTube channel called Loner Film Productions with some of my video projects. I have a passion for film. However, in 2024, I started falling in love with audio drama podcasts and voice acting. Nearing the end of 2024, I wanted to do another project so I started writing. As I started writing though, I realized I could not bring this to life as a film without a bigger budget. That's when I decided that this should become an audio drama! And this is what made me create this project. One thing about me, I am determined. And I am determined to bring this project to life and I hope anyone who auditions is excited to go on this journey with me!

I will never use AI for this project.

Portia "PJ" Jenkins, 22 years old, a Scorpio. She was adopted when she was a baby. She is studying for her master's in history. She got her bachelor's in history and gender and sexuality studies last semester. She works at her parents' grocery store. She is anxious, quirky, painfully insecure, and has no idea where her identity lies. She can be blunt when she doesn't filter herself and she has a habit of not thinking before speaking. She often goes on rants whether it's to other people or herself. She feels very stuck in her life and wishes she could hang out with her friends more often, but they are too busy with classes so she's usually alone with her own thoughts.

Voice Type: Deadpan, quirky, anxious, blunt

References: Example 1 for casual voice. Example 2 for casual voice. Example for panicked voice.

Acting Specifications: I chose real people speaking in a natural setting in my references to showcase that I'm looking for voices that come off as authentic. With this character, she has many highs and lows. I need someone with the range to capture anger, sadness, and happiness. She is both the drama and the comic relief in this series so you need to be able to be real with her anguish, but also nail the delivery on comedic lines. She often delivers deadpan lines, but during her panicky moments she becomes more dramatic for comedic effect.

Actor Specifications: I originally wanted a black voice actor, but I'm opening it up to all poc. Identity is very important in this series and race plays a part in that. Unfortunately, this role isn't open for non-poc actors. Age 20+

Warnings For Role: Swearing, sexual references, dark humor (not overtly offensive), depression, mental breakdowns, negative self talk, anxiety, screaming. PJ is in every scene of the script, even if it's a couple of lines, so there is a lot of dialogue for this role. Be sure you can handle that before auditioning.

PJ screams at least once per episode. Give me your best horror movie scream at the end of your audition lines.

  • (panicked) Ohhh, my stomach hurts. Why is it so hot in here? I'm about to have a panic attack. My anxiety can't take this. Why wouldn't they tell me? Now I have to wait hours! But it's okay because everything is fine. Don't be so negative. They're probably not even going to bring up aliens.

  • (sad) They say they love me and it feels like a slap in the face. I don't believe them. People say it, but don't mean it. It feels like they're lying to me. And the "I'm proud of you." For what? For accomplishing nothing? It's just all lies and I can't stand hearing it.

  • (deadpan) If this is about therapy again, I told you I already went to three therapists. They all talk in a condescending tone and kept trying to dig into my personal life.

Aaron Brown, 23, Capricorn. He is PJ's friend. They met in their freshmen year  along with Nat. He is a biology major, previously an engineering major, in his last semester for his bachelor's. He has two older sisters and he was raised by his grandparents. He is an awkward, science nerd. He is a bit of a pushover and doesn't like fighting. He loves movie soundtracks, gaming, and sending memes to the group chat. He has a habit of overcorrecting people, but he's an overall chill guy.

Voice Type: Chill, excitable, calm

References: N/A

Acting Specifications: I need someone who can do awkward comedy well. His awkwardness should come off as lovable more than cringy. His lines are clunky intentionally, but I want it delivered in a way that sounds natural for that character even if it's a little convoluted. He does have his deep moments so you need to be able to play on those emotional scenes too. Voice should sound authentic and not overly acted. I want it to feel real instead of an archetype.

  • I don't know. It feels awkward just passing each other in the parking lot when they said bye. Should I continue a conversation, wave, ignore her... I'll wait a minute.

  • (complains) Freaking Sonic rejected me. You don't even have to roller skate there anymore, what more job qualifications do I need?! I tried every nearby fast food chain now. The clothing stores rejected me. The post office didn't hire me. And the federal work study even rejected me earlier this year. Stupid Nana making sure I focused on my education instead of forcing me to work at fourteen.

  • I don't know who I am either. I changed my major, I'm graduating late, I don't have a job... Yet. I feel like I don't contribute to society, but then you or Nat or Ma or Pa call me and I remember that I'm important to somebody. I still have time to figure things out.

Natalie "Nat" Smith, 22, Sagittarius. She is PJ's friend. They met in their freshmen year of college along with Aaron. Nat is working on her master's degree, studying to become a "nurse practitioner." She is often busy. Classes in the morning, clinical hours in the afternoon, and RA duty at night. In her tight schedule, she tries to hang out with her friends. Her personality can be stand offish to others who don't know her. She suffers from RBF and has a monotone voice that can rub people the wrong way. She's blunt in a non-accidental way. She is usually truthful with PJ even when she doesn't want to hear it. Even though she comes off mean, she loves her friends and cares about them. She physically is unable to not be sarcastic and she loves poking fun at PJ.

Voice Type: Monotone, sarcastic

References: Generic Reference (Remi)

Acting Specifications: You do not need to follow the reference exactly. It's a good reference for someone who has a monotone voice, but it's not emotionless. I don't want an archetype or someone who is completely icy and  emotionless. Add your own touch to the voice to make it well rounded. I need someone who can do sarcasm and dry humor well. She does make it seem like she doesn't care at times, but she does and there needs to be a balance between that emotion and her general demeanor. She does have scenes where she's frustrated and sad so there needs to be range between dramatic and funny.

  • (groans) Can't do anything tonight, tomorrow, next week, next month. Can't even breathe, it doesn't fit in my schedule.

  • I don't like the thought of you being hurt physically or emotionally and I hate being the cause especially with all the stuff that happened yesterday. So when I say I'm sorry, I mean it with the entirety of my being from the tip of my head to the bottom of my fucking ass, I'm sorry.

  • My dad doesn't say "I love you." If we're done talking on the phone, he says goodbye, stays on the phone for five more seconds, and then hangs up. And that's his version of "I love you."

Mom, Samantha Jenkins. She is PJ's adoptive mother. She is eccentric like her husband. She just wants what's best for her daughter. She loves her daughter and she makes sure she tells PJ that everyday. She is a natural parent who doesn't believe in modern medicine, her daughter has never needed it. All in all, she is your stereotypical suburban mom. She is loving, caring, and nurturing.

Voice Type: Mom archetype, nurturing, sweet

References: Lori Alan's Mom Sadness and Bonnie's Mom (20 second mark)

Acting Specifications: I need someone who can be sincere in the comedy. The comedy works better for the character when the voice actor plays it honestly. This is mostly a comedy role with some sweet moments.

AM, age unknown, name unknown. One of PJ's birth parents. They are an alien from another planet. They are the one who birthed PJ. They have come back to bring PJ back to their home planet and they are determined to get PJ back. They are more pushy about PJ returning home than their co-parent.

Voice Type: Authoritative, stern, light

References: Similar to this

Acting Specifications: With the  reference in mind, I want that air of authority except lighter. Your voice should be light, but authoritative. It should seem welcoming, but intimidating. I want the tone of voice to be noted from the reference, but do not do an accent that isn't natural to you. I want actors to just go for it. Take risks. Even if it's not exactly like the reference, do what feels right. Take note that in the edit there will be reverb and echo put on your recording to add to the alien feel. This role is mainly drama acting. There are some lines that need good comedic delivery, but for the most part this role is played very seriously.

Actor Specifications: This is gender blind casting, any gender can audition for this role. Gender does not matter.  20+

AD, age unknown, name unknown. One of PJ's birth parents. They are an alien from another planet. They are the co-parent to PJ. They have come back to bring PJ back to their home planet and they are determined to get PJ back. They go the more soft, coercive route compared to AM.

These are for voice actors who are 18+ who want to be a part of the series in a small role. These characters are in one scene and have minimal lines. I only need five extras. Here are some lines from the various extra roles, which should be performed differently since each line is from a different extra. If you're casted, I'll see what role might fit you.
