How to make a fandub
By Buford Taylor, who runs Casting Call Club. Updated October 2026.
A fan dub is your own voice cast performing over a scene from an anime, cartoon or game. They're one of the most popular kinds of project on Casting Call Club, with thousands posted a year, and one of the easiest to actually finish. Here's how to make a fandub from picking the scene to posting it.
1. Pick a short scene
Two to five minutes with a handful of characters is perfect for a first dub. Long episodes stall. Pick something you love, because you'll watch it about a hundred times.
2. Write the script
Transcribe each line with the character's name and a timestamp. If you're translating, adapt the lines so they fit the mouth movements. A direct translation is often too long or too short.
3. Cast it
- Post a casting call with each character, a short description, two or three lines and a link to the original scene. How to write a casting call has a template.
- Say it's unpaid fan work up front. Almost all fandubs are, and saying so plainly attracts the right people.
- Set a deadline for auditions and for final lines.
Fandub roles get a lot of auditions from people starting out, so you'll usually have plenty to choose from.
4. Collect clean lines
Ask everyone for dry audio: no music, no reverb, no effects, one file per line, named clearly. Ask for a second take of the important lines. It saves a round of retakes later.
5. Edit and mix
- Get the scene's music and effects without the original voices, if you can find them, or rebuild the sound with free effects.
- Line up each take with the mouth movements in a video editor. DaVinci Resolve and CapCut are free.
- Even out the volume between actors and add a touch of room sound so everyone sounds like they're in the same place.
Need help with the mix? Lots of audio engineers and video editors here help on fandubs.
6. Post it and credit everyone
Upload it with every cast member credited in the description. Fandubs can't be sold, and some rights holders take dubs of new shows down, so expect that now and then.
