In this version, Elsa and her father, Hugo, own an inn in the valley. One day, a knight and his hunting party come to the inn. Bertold, the knight, is taken with Elsa and invites her to attend the upcoming tournament as his guest. Her father is ecstatic, but Elsa admits that she wouldn't fit in because their lower status. Hugo makes a journey to the pawnbroker in the city to sell some of his late wife's jewelry to attempt to make ends meet and buy Elsa a new dress for the tournament. On his way back, he comes across a mysterious castle where he can rest his head for the night. In the morning, he takes a rose from the rosebush for Elsa but is then ambushed by the Beast of the castle who accuses him of stealing from him and demands that whatever living creature greets him when he returns home belongs to him. Hugo goes home expecting the dog to greet him, but to his horror, Elsa is the first one to welcome him home.
Upon hearing what the Beast has demanded, Elsa goes to the castle with some of her own roses to appease the Beast. However, when she comes face-to-face with the Beast, he demands that she be his wife and refuses to let her leave the castle.
Over time, Elsa befriends the two servants, Wenzel who has donkey ears and Irmel who has a pig nose, and she very gradually begins to bond with the Beast as he shows a more tender side of himself.
While their connection becomes stronger, Elsa still cannot bring herself to admit her feelings for him for fear of abandoning her father. However, she cannot deny her feelings for long, even when Bertold becomes angry, jealous, and suspicious of her. Elsa must hurry back to the castle with Bertold on her tail before she loses everything she holds dear.
