James “Mad Dog” Kirkland: Arthur’s best friend, whom he met at Fort Dix, since their units were segregated. Due to James being African American, they lost touch, until they met each other in Kansas and rekindled their friendship. James is an ambitious young man who wants to move up in life and wants to find a family to belong to, having lost his parents when he was young. Like Arthur, he found his job prospects grim due to his race and him not accepting making bare minimum to get by. James and Arthur meet at a bar one night when the pilot begins.
