Worldbuilding an atmosphere of interpersonal disconnection

Worldbuilding an atmosphere of interpersonal disconnection

Project Overview

This project is part of a much larger whole, but deals expressly with worldbuilding soundbites and recordings.
We are working to paint a picture of a world with no strong interpersonal connections, and thus full of conflict - pushed by the media with international reports of terrorism, on foreign and home soil, controversial legal changes that affect the rights of many people (think abortion, immigration or healthcare *though the subtext remains vague at best)
The recordings are a slew of talkback radio rambling, opinion pieces on TV shows which play by stereotypes with pseudo meaningful discussions wrapped in the professional news broadcasts of perpetual bad news with the occasional 'firemen help a cat out of a tree' feel good fakery thrown in to soften the blow of the next lot of job cuts, right abolishing legislation, tax or interest rate hike, or international atrocity uncovered.
With superficial ads for superficial products of course.

These are mostly short snippets intended as an underlying subtext to give more credence to a overarching story set in this world. As such, I'm happy to have some leeway on hearing recordings done over the course of the next month and working from the auditions that are the most promising and fitting to the angle we're working with. If you have any questions, feel free to include them with your audition and I'll do my best to answer them as possible. The project is currently nearly the production phase, but a timeframe for completion is still very much up in the air. Payment for work done will be sent via Paypal in USD. If you have an alternative suggestion for payment, I can discuss it direct, but this would be the ideal method.

Professional, well paced - mostly dealing with deadly serious international reporting on crises and major political or social events. Consciously works to keep a consistent tone and style of delivery. Deeper voice would be preferred - to communicate a sense of power and persuasion.

  • The passing of the legislation is considered groundbreaking for the administration, and will likely be heavily contested by the opposition in the leadup to the next election cycle.

  • As conflicts continue across the country, all eyes have turned to the family of the dictator to see how they approach this now life threatening coup.

  • Reports from the diner were that there was at least one injured hostage inside, and no demands had been made by the criminal inside.

Weather Girl

A terrible trope of any media station, the weather girl exists for appearances, not necessarily skill. Modeled after a typical news report, cheerful, upbeat tone as she addresses the various weather condition.  Conversational but precise.

  • We've got this cold front moving in from the south which may cause some problems for the farmers in the region...

  • Sunny weather over the weekend, so dust off your bikes and get down to the river for the annual kayaking club tournament.

  • Back to you in the studio Adam

TV Talk Show (The Philosopher or Wise Elder)

A wise elder or philosopher figure on a talkshow, the kind of person they bring in to wrap a story in a neat little bow, give some potent anecdotes and idioms and bring the show to a nice end, even if it doesn't resolve anything. Speaks with a world weariness, with a spark of flame - wants to banter with an intellectual equal but is frustrated by the youthful company that doesn't give him credit where credit is likely due.

  • Division will destroy this country. Right now the most important thing we can give is understanding, without caveats, without conditions.

  • It just feels like we get so jaded and cynical about hearing what goes on here and abroad that we lose touch with those closest to us...

  • But what you're saying...what you're arguing for is a system which says 'you can have this, but you, no you can't.' I feel like I'm the only one on this panel to know about a time when we were able to say freedom was universal. And it might be my nostalgia talking, I don't know...but it was a hell of a lot more sincere and open then this.

Boisterous and passionate presenter who strives to have a moral and intellectual high ground while dealing with somewhat vague arguments. Strong female presence on the show, but not always guided in a straight path.

  • But it's kind of a non-argument really. I mean, when you talk about rights, you're talking about 'is this right for me?' In the sense of...I choose this and this is my choice alone to make. They are not capable of making a choice of their own, so why do we still debate this?

  • I know it's a controversial angle to have, but we need to push some sense back into this day and age - sometimes it feels like I age several years when I'm on the show with you David.

TV Host (The Butt of the Joke)

Almost like a walking joke, and not in a good way, this character represents the worst qualities of a host, in that they're regularly unfunny, scripted to be embarrassed and upstaged by the elder hosts and a bad stereotype for the millennial generation. Portrayed as ignorant or uneducated, but generally provokes a discussion.

  • I mean, look at what year is on the calendar, and we're still having this argument?

  • It's just sick, I mean. That tragedy there is what makes the world a little worse to live in for people. To hear that almost everyday.

  • Now this I can get behind. I mean, it's not subtle or nuanced, but come on, it's dogs with hair shaped like hats!

Radio - Talkback Opinions

Various voices calling in to voice opinions or banter to a somewhat energetic pair of hosts. Feel free to improvise your own.

  • I was down south for a few months and you learn a lot when you're on the road. It's funny, we never really had a good connection to technology when we were there, it was actual family time you know? Uh, but when we were heading back and suddenly you hear on the news 'it passed, they're in!' it's like a bad dream you know? ...Well I mean not like that, but you're kind of shocked, and can you imagine being away from civilisation for that long and realising that this is what happened while you were gone? Almost makes you want to crawl back into the forest, you know?

  • My sister was with this guy, and our family all knew they were going to be trouble, because you just know people like that. Alarm bells start going off and so I ask her how long she'd known him 'oh, 2 months she said' and they were talking about getting engaged just like that! It was so surreal because mum was going along with it right, and dad, well, dad stayed out of it because he didn't want to know. ...I don't blame him, I mean, you really had to meet this guy to know what a deadhead he was, but to her she was in love and that was it. ...Yeah and they did get married! ...Don't even ask about the reception.

TV News Report - Sampling

Varied 'on the scene' recordings of people making comments relevant to the current news story. Often these will be interjected in the scenes of this project without context, so they don't need a specific agenda - feel free to improvise your own and record with less then stellar environments for authenticity. The above included line is intended for a professional male lawyer, but any on the scene reporting can be improvised.

  • "We know what the problems with the system are, but it comes down to the bottom line and economically it's never a viable option to say 'drop this approach in favor of one that's ten times more exhaustive in costs and time factors. Admittedly, yes, it'd be great to implement, but it's unrealistic on a large scale."

  • Feel free to improv your own reports here.

A lot of these lines will depend on improvising based on what eventual 'on the scene' reports are chosen, so improvising based on what are provided in the role corresponding to the reports would be for the best. Examples might be 'Tom Jennings was the first man on the scene" or "We managed to get ahold of the recently widowed husband to hear his side of the story".
Go for a snarky, compelling, nosy take on the reporter. Middle aged is also acceptable for age.

  • "The court case on the dispute will begin next week"
