Wintergirls | Sims 3 VO Series

Wintergirls | Sims 3 VO Series

Project Overview

A Sims 3 adaption of the best-selling novel by Laurie Halse Anderson.

--

"“Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls.
“Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another.
I am that girl.
I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through.
I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame. "

Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the skinniest. But what comes after size zero and size double-zero? When Cassie succumbs to the demons within, Lia feels she is being haunted by her friend’s restless spirit.

Lia is the main character of the series. She is deeply entrenched in her eating disorder and mental illnesses. She tends to be volatile and emotionally unstable.

  • (sharp, close to tears) Stop it. I don’t want to see anymore. I have to go now.

  •  (whispering, kind of creepy; This is the inner-voice in Lia’s head) Body… found in a motel room, alone…

  •  I fell off the edge of the map. My sister saw me do this. Her name is Emma. She’s the one who plays soccer, even though she hates it. She’s nine and she loves me a lot and… and I messed her up for the rest of her life. I can’t stay here. I hurt too many people.

Cassie leads opposite Lia in this series. Technically she dies before the series even starts, but Lia is haunted by a ghost-like version of Cassie through the series (present also in Lia's flashbacks). So her voice should contain an aspect of menace/hauntedness.

  • Keep this up and we’ll do New Years together. Stay strong, sweetie.

  • (evil, malicious) You want me to help you, Lia-Lia? Help you like you helped me? How’s this then? You’re not skinny. You’re a pus-filled whale. Your mom wishes she had given you up for adoption. Your dad secretly thinks you’re not really his kid. People laugh at you when your fat jiggles. You’re ugly. You’re stupid. You’re boring. The only thing you’re good at is starving, but you can’t even do that right. You’re a waste. (tone turns friendly) And that’s why I love you. Hurry up, okay?

  •  I swear that I will always do exactly what I want. I will be happy and rich and skinny and hot. So hot the boys will beg.

Emma is nine-year-old step-sister to Lia. She is an impressionable young girl, who looks up to Lia with everything she has.

  • (groans) I hate soccer.

  • Wake up, Lia! You’re going to be late! You’re going to be in trouble!

  • (tears in her voice) Lia, are you going to die?

Chloe is Lia's mother, a high-class professional heart-surgeon. Her polished exterior and personality may make her seem aloof, but she loves her daughter with everything she's got, and desperately wants to see her happy and healthy again.

  • Lia looks pale. Has she been eating?

  • You’re allowed to feel upset about this. In fact, I’d rather see you upset than pretending it’s not bothering you.

  • Your body wants to live, Lia, even if your head doesn’t. Your numbers rebounded quickly at the hospital; liver functions improved, QT interval improved, phosphate and calcium levels better. You’re tough and I mean that in the best way possible, medically speaking.

Professor David Overbrook is father to Lia. He's a little oblivious through the majority of her struggle, but he can also get every over-emotional and involved when things come to a tee.

  • Lia? I know you’re awake. We need to talk… I’m sorry about Cassie, honey.

  • What are you talking about? We’re a hundred percent supportive, aren’t we, Lia?

  • (loud, angry) Dammit, Lia! That’s not true and you know it. Are we supposed to let you starve yourself to death?

Jennifer is Lia's step-mother, and Emma's full mother. She is reluctantly dragged into all of Lia's 'issues', and despite the hardship and the way Lia may seem a 'burden' with all of her hospitilizations and such, she comes to love Lia as much as she loves her own, full-blood daughter.

  • (stressed) She tripped on her shoelaces, fell on the court and broke her arm. We’ve been in the ER for two hours.

  • You can be so sweet sometimes, you know that? I owe you huge.

  • David doesn’t want me to say this to you, but too bad. I love you, Lia. When I married your father, I swore to love you like you were my own. But you hurt my little girl. You hurt her by starving yourself, you hurt her with your lies, and by fighting everybody who tries to help you.

Elijah is the maintenance worker at the motel where Cassie died. He gets roped into being involved with Lia when Cassie gives him a message to deliver to Lia. He's eccentric, confident, and marches to the beat of his own drum. Eventually, he befriends Lia.

  • A kid came by an hour ago. His buddies dared him. He wanted to see if there was blood.

  • (laughs) Okay, I’m mostly a vegetarian. I’m a pizzatarian. Come on in.

  • What happened? What the hell is going on?

Lia's psychiatrist.

  • Lia, I wonder if there might be two struggles going on. Confusion and grief about the loss of a friend, and the desire to keep your parents at a distance.

  • You didn’t have to come here today. You could have used the excuse of a therapy appointment to get out of class and do whatever you wanted. I don’t report back to your parents unless you give me permission, so they wouldn’t know it if you didn’t show up.

  • I’m really proud of you, Lia. You accomplished more today than in the last two years. Do I have your permission to discuss this session?
