We Live in Siren's Call: An Official Fandub

Project Overview

 We Live in Siren's Call?

Siren's Call is a wonderful indie visual novel by Jacob Cumiskey. While it hasn't garnered a lot of mainstream attention, it is a game made with a lot of love and care and it means a lot to a lot of people. As one of these people, I thought I'd organise this project. Endorsed by Jacob and with his eye to ensure that I don't tarnish his project, this dub is a chance to play with how audio can enhance this game. While I wouldn't refer to Siren's Call as a horror game, audio plays a large part in both atmosphere and character and I'd love to experiment with how it could enhance the experience.

I would like to firmly suggest that people play through the ENTIRE game before auditioning for this project, both to get a sense for the characters and to prevent spoiling themselves on what is one of the best narratives I have immersed myself in. It is entirely free, so there is no reason not to do so. I want to bring together a team of people equally touched by this game, those who want to help build this atmosphere and those who would be willing to use their talent to further this project.

 What am I auditioning for?

There are not many roles in this game, with a small main cast and not too much in terms of side characters, so the casting will be quite narrow. These characters have a LOT of dialogue, so they will be quite intensive roles. It is important to note, however, that some characters may have more than one voice actor...

These roles will, unfortunately, not be paid. This is a passion project being entirely done for fun and fueled by a love for this game, along with a desire to play with its design. I do apologise for this as I do understand the wish for compensation, especially for such big roles as these, but I am not in a financial place to promise anything for what is, in reality, a non-profit creation.

 Guidelines

  • Please record with good quality equipment!
  • Though what this entails is not necessarily strict (you can do a surprising amount with limited tools), audio quality is vital for this project. Your audio quality will play a part in your casting, so if you are in a position where you have to wait to improve your quality, please do so. Limit background noise as much as possible, and touch up your audio if necessary.
  • Please do not edit your takes!
  • While I do encourage touching up your audio if this means giving a better quality, I want to hear your raw voice and skills. Please don't edit your takes otherwise. If you are proficient in editing, I may ask you for help in the future, but that is all.
  • Please provide your Discord handle with your audition!
  • Communication about the project will be handled on a Discord server that I will invite those cast to, and for that reason I will only be casting people who can provide Discord handles. If you don't do so and I cast you, I will prompt you for this information, but you'll only have so long to cast it.

As an additional, more stern notice, this game deals with some very triggering topics and mature themes, and all of the characters are above the age of 18. As such, please only apply if you are 16+. This is a hard limit, and lying about this will result in you being kicked from the project. I don't want to have to reopen calls to recast roles because of a lack of professionalism.

Please don't be hesitant to audition! Even if you are not chosen for any of these characters, there are plenty of small 'extras' throughout the game that I may assign you.

If you have any questions, feel free to message me through CCC!

Latest Updates

  • Deadline!

Time is up! Happy Halloween everyone! I am so thrilled to have had everyone's auditions, and casting will be going ahead shortly. If you haven't received a message yet, don't worry. I've been incredibly busy with work the past month and haven't been able to reach out to everyone specifically as they've auditioned. So, what happens next? Over the next week, I'll be messaging those who have been cast with a link to the discord server we'll be using to manage things. This doesn't just include those who have gotten the part for main roles in this dub, but also those I have offered smaller side parts/cameos. I don't have the most time in the world and so putting together things like scripts and editing together all of the audio, while I am able to do so, is going to be pretty taxing and difficult to get done. I am determined to do it, but I will need some time. That's why I encourage everyone who gets into the server who hasn't already played the game to get in on it and make sure they're familiar enough with the material to begin to tackle the game. Thank you all for your time!

Oliver is the main character and protagonist of this game, the brooding captain of the Midnight Guard with a love for poetry, punk rock and his girlfriend, Violet. How any of these characters, Oliver included, should sound largely depends on your interpretation of their dialogue, but he's a very corny guy and this should show. Often making awkward jokes and advancing on social situations from a carefully analysed point of view, his position as a captain shouldn't reduce the essence of this character - he's awkward, he didn't choose to be the hero and while he loves his friends, he's never been the most socially adept of them.

  • (Jokingly serious) I hate sand. It's grainy, bumpy, bothersome... AND BY GOLLY IT JUST GETS EVERYWHERE!

So kiss me, Violet! Kiss me with your lips that are, in fact, not like sand and thus desirable!

  • (Solemn) The familiar rumble of empty fuel tanks slamming into the ocean. The amber glow of jet fuel burning against the violent pink of a perfect, tropical sky...

I grew to hate all of it.

Every launch grounded me more and more into the fetid, Florida muck.

Because all I could do in this town was watch better people leave.

Because being autistic makes you more like rocket fuel than an actual rocket.

  • (Earnest) Well, that's a big relief! Yeah! I feel like *much* less of a failure if you're just as lost as I am! You're incredible, Violet- I've learned so much just by talking with you.

So if someone as amazing as you doesn't know how to fix any of this, then I'm *certain* feeling lost is completely normal. And if being lost is normal, then I shouldn't feel too beat-up about not knowing what to do, right?

Violet is Oliver's girlfriend, a very significant character in the narrative and a painter with a love of space and corny humour. With a loving group of friends helping her to graduate despite her epileptic seizures, she's often the life of every conversation and makes goofy jokes that are often indistinguishable to the truth. She's the epitome of a free-spirit, refusing to be tied down by anything she doesn't enjoy and marching to the beat of her own drum, only begrudgingly accepting help with her condition.

  • (Playful) You're freakin' hot, doofus. You spend, like, what, seven hours a day working out? That body of yours is one step below divinity. Any aspiring artist would kill to have you model for them!

Nobody's ever asked you to do this before?

  • (Wise) Why is it that being lost feels like such a sin? It's not like we were ever *taught* what to do in these kinds of situations. Of course we'd get lost at sea like this... we were never properly equipped to handle something like this in the first place!

Other people's ideas... that's all we have,,, a paper boat melting on the skin of a very real sea. And none of that is powerful enough to save a life.

  • (Teasing) I still have nudes of you on my phone. And like any hero, I'm not afraid to use them as a tool for justice. So yeah, take the hint. It'll be fine.

I can just replace your junk with an accordion or something. Yes, yes! They'll study your form for years to come, and you'll be known far and wide as 'accordion dick'. And it will all be *accordion* to plan! Hehe.

Ashton is the typical 'brawn' of the Midnight Guard, a brave hard-hitter with a powerful love for his friends, his family and a desire to prove himself despite the struggle he's faced. Though he was once a bully, even to his close friends, he has since matured and regrets how his trauma took over him. Now, he just wants to show his friends that he's a better person now. He has grown and he will continue to grow, being one of the most mature members of the group, and this is reflected in the insightful way that he speaks - while he is the brawn, he doesn't lack brains.

  • (Excited) No way! You guys have chicken fried steak? *HELL YEAH!* Is there a limit? Gimme seven!

  • (Irritated) Okay, I'm getting sick of this crazy talk. None of that is why Violet's gone, and you know it. Wake up man! This isn't how you're supposed to be! We live in Siren's Call. Siren's Call, *FLORIDA*. Half of the people who live here are too chill to be angry about shit; they've always been like this.

This stuff about killing their brains or whatever is all in your head. We did the right thing; I know we did. So stop trying to make me feel like crap for saving people.

  • (Regretful) It's okay, It wasn't for a while, yeah, but I'm good now. I'm just sorry you had to put up with the kid that shark created. That kid's dead now though, don't worry. It's fine.

People die all the time. It hurts, but you gotta keep moving forward. Just like you said. So cut that self-deprecating shit out, man. You're better than that. You're so much better than that.

Andi is the most stubborn of her friend group, driven and determined. She's a motivated athlete, and spends much of her time encouraging, empowering and training her friends to stand on their own and fight powerfully so she doesn't have to worry about them as much herself. She loves her friends and has a big heart, but can come off as rude or abrasive because of the manner in which she speaks and the jokes she makes - quite the opposite of her twin sister Judith, despite their similar appearances and backgrounds. Often loud, she's one of the most 'fun' characters, the most lively and outgoing of the group and truly 'one of the boys'.

  • You failed. Now any number of terrible things could happen to you, Oliver. What's to stop me from killing you in cold blood right now? What's to stop me from dragging you back to my basement and torturing you for weeks and weeks until your mind shatters like a damn china doll? You weren't strong enough to live. Now, you belong to nature. And nature... belongs to me.

  • Oh, come the frick ON!!! This ball is actual, literal, garbage juice. This is Hell, isn't it? I slipped on a banana peel or something on my way to school, and now I'm stuck in Hell throwing orange garbage bags into this hoop for all eternity.

  • God, screaming is such a useless reflex... All it does is give other people a chance to learn how weak you really are. Before I knew it, all of you were just... staring at me. I knew Ash would never let me live it down.

Emil is the tactician of the group, a bookworm with a fondness for classic literature and chess. Though he's incredibly bright, surprisingly adept with a sword and is often insightful in ways that his friends simply can't compete with, he tends to have a strong disdain for himself and the lack of perfection he's able to achieve. Despite this, he often has quite a confident exterior and speaks in a way that almost demands respect. He's not uptight and tends to show a lot of passion for the things he cares about, but his vision falls flat when it comes to finding the good in himself.

  • (Solemn) Second rate... Everything I am is second rate. Ashton is bolder, Andi is tougher, Violet is wiser. And Judith, as I've come to discover, is far more intelligent than I could ever hope to be.

  • (Excited) I love sharks. Fascinating creatures, really! Did you know that some shark embryos actually cannibalise each other while in the womb?

  • (Challenging) Why are *you* going to college, Oliver? If you can provide a compelling enough defence for your actions, then I will concede this challenge to you.

But if you cannot substantiate your decisions in any meaningful way, then you'll have no choice but to admit that what you're doing is illogical.

Judith is Andi's twin and the most maternal friend of the group. She's the sweet and caring face you'd expect of a rich Christian girl from a well established family, always doing whatever she can to take care of her friends, achieve the grades she needs and not disregard her hobbies, mostly baking and cosplay. Despite this, she tends to be somewhat controlling of her friends, either unaware of the privilege she holds above them or purposefully manipulative - of course, never for anything bad. She's a good girl, but she always seems to get her way.

  • (Gentle) Olive, what's this about? I don't care if it's embarrassing or scary. I won't judge you. You're safe here. You'll *always* be safe here. So please, talk to me.

  • (Irritated) Here's a fun idea. Why don't you mind your own fucking business? And... reality check, you're nobody's mother. So stop acting like it!

  • (Regretful) I used to think it was my responsibility to try and keep everybody safe and happy, but maybe that's not how it should be.

Being "sweet" shouldn't be our job. Ideally, sweetness follows love - real, genuine love. So that's what I'll try and focus on.

Miss Lawrence is Violet's 'mother', though she would be more accurately considered her aunt. A speech therapist at the school that the Midnight Guard go to, she cares for Violet and Oliver and allows him to stay in their house with her due to Violet's condition. Though some would consider her morals to be somewhat flawed in that she's known to distribute drugs to those who don't exactly need to be medicated, she loves her child incredibly deeply and is incredibly determined to help anyone under her care, whether it be Violet, Oliver or any of their friends.

  • (Happy) Hey there College Boy, it's Mom. Well, Violet's Mom anyway. Obviously. Oh my gosh, I'm so excited for you! I can't believe you're actually going to college. I'm so proud.

  • (Annoyed) Olive, dear, I hope you *are* aware that I didn't permit you to live with my daughter for the sole reason of bolstering your own vain, romantic interests. I picked you because I *assumed* you were the best person for the job.

  • (Gentle) You don't have to worry about acting all stoic, darling. It's tough. There's no good in pretending otherwise. Now then, what can I help you with, College Boy?
