We Are - The Escapists Book 1 Short Content (Unpaid)
Project Overview
OVERVIEW
Hello all!!!
I'm wanting to try something new for my book I'm currently working on. It's not like most content you would see advertising new books on Booktok and other subniches like it, but I figured it would be fun to try.
So, I'm looking for voice actors! I'm interested in getting sections of what I have written so far voiced over, like they're short snippets of an audio book or audio drama. I haven't decided if it will be me or the protagonist's voice actor reading the main narration, but these will be short so it shouldn't be a ton of work. There will be a lot of trial and error to see what works, and I may ask you to voice stuff to test things out that may or may not be in the final product.
Here's the general premise:
We Are is a YA Superhero novel inspired by series like My Hero Academia and Dispatch, with some absurd humor of Dungeon Crawler Carl sprinkled in. It follows protagonist Dennis Knight, a university freshman aiming to become a hero, but gets enrolled in a top-secret FBI-adjacent program instead.
"Dennis Knight has always been destined to become a hero. Son of heroes Knightwatch and Fright Knight, he and his triplet siblings, Asia and Dakota, are accepted automatically into the top hero program in the United States at Magellan University in Magellan, New Jersey. All they really need to worry about is taking the placement test to see which class they’ll be in; Hero, Sidekick, or Support.
Dennis, however, ends up with a class he’s never heard of; E class, the Escapist Class. As his classmate, Nora, explains, “It’s basically HR on Steroids.” Their entire purpose is to keep up morale for superheroes in the public eye. They cover up mass casualties, repair property damage in record time, and make extensive cover-ups for mistakes and crimes committed by heroes.
The Escapists are abusing and exploiting everyday people, and Dennis knows it, but he has no choice but to do what he’s told. Otherwise, he risks his future and his entire family. But when another one of his classmates, Saizar, reveals a multi-layered conspiracy Dennis’s own mother is apart of, Dennis knows he has to do something before he loses what’s left of his family forever."
AUDITION GUIDELINES
You must be 16 years or older to audition.
You must have Discord in order to communicate with me.
You must have little to no background noise.
ABSOLUTELY NO AI-GENERATED CONTENT. This project is entirely human-focused and human made, no AI content will be tolerated.
This book includes queer representation, POC representation, and neurodivergent representation. If you're not comfortable with that (mainly looking at people who wouldn't be comfortable voice acting characters who would be in a queer relationship), then don't audition for this project.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
Please please PLEASE read the character descriptions!!! This will give you an idea for what the characters should sound like tonally. I've already received auditions on other platforms with vocal tone problems because people aren't reading the descriptions.
Auditioning for multiple roles is allowed! In fact, I encourage it, because I may cast one person for multiple roles.
This project is unpaid mainly because I'm testing to see if this'll even get anywhere in terms of getting eyes on my book, but also because I'm trying this out for fun. I'll give credit, of course (duh lol). If it does end up going anywhere and I start getting decent monetization, I'll start discussing payment.
There are multiple characters, including one main character, that aren't listed here for auditions mainly because I'm doing this as a test run. If this ends up being successful, there will be future casting calls.
As of right now Nora is the only POC character on the roster, and I would prefer if I could get a black voice actress for her if possible, but there will be other POC characters in the future.
Tentative deadline for auditions is May 10th, but this is subject to change depending on how much interest I get.

MAIN CHARACTER - Included in almost every chapter of the book.
Age: 18
Pronouns: he/him
Dennis is blunt and on-the-nose, generally somewhat deadpan, but does experience strong emotions he tends to hide. He has a bit of a sarcastic streak and refuses to take shit from anyone (unless they're Asia and Dakota). While he puts on a face of being steady and sure of himself, he's extremely insecure about himself and what he can bring to the world, compared to his much more socially accepted siblings.

(taken aback, annoyed, muttering to himself) What kind of logical fallacy nonsense is this?
(Deadpan) Two minutes. It was by two minutes.
(fed up, tired) Can we please stop talking like I’m not here? [pause, sigh] (resigned) I need some time alone.
MAIN CHARACTER - Included in almost every chapter of the book.
Age: 19
Pronouns: she/her
Where Dennis is abrasive, Nora is calm and controlled. She's a grounding force with a strong moral compass, who refuses to let anyone or anything get in the way of her goals. She never wanted to be a hero; instead, she got into the hero program to learn everything she could so she could change it. From what she's seen, heroes are nothing but corrupt. If she wants actually good heroes serving the public, she'll have to work from the inside, tear it apart, and shape it into something new.

(curious, unamused) You three are the Knights, right? The ones from that kidnapping case a few years ago?
(deadpan) So like HR on steroids.
(clipped, determined) No. I don’t work with heroes.
RECURRING CHARACTER - Included in most and/or several chapters of the book.
Age: 18
Pronouns: they/them
The simplest way to describe Dakota is a party animal. They're a chaotic good type who likes to pull pranks and start fights for the thrill, even if it means they get their ass kicked in the process. They're loud, excitable, and love bantering with just about anybody they're friendly with. Dennis describes Dakota like lightning about to strike; nobody knows what's about to hit them when Dakota shows up.

(pouting) Ugh, man, why is it always the eyebrow thing? I wanna do the eyebrow thing.
(strained, a bit uncomfortable but trying to stay positive) Yep, that’s us alright.
(angry, rambling) Those fucking board members are fucking idiots. Dennis is literally the best of the best, they’re throwing out a huge opportunity putting him in fucking support!
RECURRING CHARACTER - Included in most and/or several chapters of the book.

If Dakota's pure chaos, then Asia is the order to balance them. Calm, poised, and graceful, she's empathetic to a fault and cares deeply about her family. While less outspoken than her two siblings, her words carry a weight to them that makes everyone in the room pay attention to what she has to say. Dennis describes her like a still lake just before sunrise, undisturbed by nature or the wind.

(insistent, gentle) I want to hear it from him.
(unsure about saying this, reassuring) If it makes you feel better about your chances, I probably won’t be in the hero class long.
(determined, sure of herself) That’s why: ‘this is all we’ve worked towards.’ Everyone expects us to be heroes. Our parents are heroes, we have strong marks, it only makes sense we use them to be heroes. But I’m tired of being told who we’re supposed to be. Aren’t you?
RECURRING CHARACTER - Included in most and/or several chapters of the book.
Age: 43
Pronouns: he/him
Matthias is what you would expect from a goofy, fun-loving dad who just wants the best for his kids. He's known widely to the public for his work as the hero Fright Knight. When not doing hero work, he has a love for wearing gaudy Hawaiian shirts and scrapbooking. He likes to have something to look back on for the lives of his kids growing up.

(warm, excited) Of course I do! My kids are finally growing up, off to transition their way into adulthood.
(reassuring, trying to ease tension) Hey, Support’s not all bad. People have done amazing things in support! Besides, there’ll be plenty of opportunities for Dennis to up his class. He can get into the hero class that way.
(scolding) Dennis, keep your projects at the bottom of the stack! The. Bottom.
RECURRING CHARACTER - Included in most and/or several chapters of the book.
Age: 45
Pronouns: she/her
Taking on the moniker of Knightwatch in her hero work, she and her husband have been a reliable hero duo for decades. While in her younger years she'd been similar to Dennis in temperament, she's mellowed out as she's gotten older and watched her kids grow up. She's caring and makes a point to guide her kids as best she can, but she can be a bit intense at points.

(chiding, gentle) Dennis, hun, you have soot on your forehead.
(scolding) Language, Dakota!
(sad, concerned) Baby… It’s not the end of the world.
RECURRING CHARACTER - Included in most and/or several chapters of the book.
Age: Late 40s--Early 50s
Pronouns: she/her
Director of the Escapists Class at Magellan University, she's usually a pretty cool but stern teacher who's fairly relatable, except for when someone gets on her nerves. She doesn't tolerate getting shit from her students, and she will put them in their place without hesitation. As long as you're respecting her time and willing to learn from her, you'll never have to deal with her bad side.
NOTE: This character is planned on being recurring, but as of right now she only has one piece of voice acting in the earlier chapters.

(reassuring) He won’t remember this. [pause, as if composing herself] (cheery, instructional) Good morning, students. If you do not recognize the term ‘E Class,’ then you are lost and I recommend you leave now.
(light-hearted and teasing, but serious) You will. If you can handle keeping a secret, that is.
(firm) That only happened because he bothered to work with other people. (disappointed) I don’t appreciate this kind of arrogance, Mr. Knight.
