AS DRY AND SPEECHLESS AS THE MOON (Indie Sci-Fi Visual Novel)

Project Overview

About This Casting Call

This casting call is for AS DRY AND SPEECHLESS AS THE MOON, a sci-fi visual novel about a brother looking for his missing sister. I'm still writing the full, four act script for this game, but I'd like to get a vertical slice demo up featuring Act I. I would want any VAs interested in this project to also be interested in paid voice acting for the remaining 3 acts (each of which are notably longer than Act I), at some future point.

More paid roles (both masc and femme) will be needed for this project after the Act I demo is up, so if this project sounds interesting to you but you don't think you'd be a good fit for the listed roles, please follow, and I'd love to have you consider auditioning for a future role!

The project image on CCC is a WIP.

Project Description

You lie bruised and unconscious in the aged skeleton of a wrecked intergalactic ship. Somewhere on this planet, among all this shifting sand, is the woman you've been looking for.

The path ahead of you will be long and winding — through a noisy, nomadic camp, the desert's relentless heat, a crowded city, and the long shadow of a past you can’t escape. But before you can begin, you first need to wake up.

Inspired by the prose of Citizen Sleeper and the sci-fi deserts of Star Wars, AS DRY AND SPEECHLESS AS THE MOON is a story of belief, survival, mercy, and the long pilgrimage towards what we most desire.

About Me

I'm an award-winning artist and game developer interested in interactive storytelling. You can view the games I’ve created at https://www.romanhyacinths.com/games. I previously worked with VAs on two short visual novels, which you can play here and here.

Timeline and Contract
  1. Audition deadline: 7/19/2026 at 8 p.m. EST

  2. I’ll select VAs by or before: 8/2/2026 at 8 p.m. EST (a full script of Act I and snippets from the other acts will be made available before each VA signs to check their interest in the full project)

  3. VAs submit first full audio take by: 8/16/2026 at 8 p.m. EST

  4. VAs submit final re-takes on individual lines by: 8/26/2026 at 8 p.m. EST

  5. I’ll pay VAs: Within 5 business days of final re-takes

If you’re curious, I’ve made the legal contract for a past VA hiring public. The contracts for this game will be similar, but customized to each role. It’s pretty standard — covers the flat payment and additional payment for re-takes, required deadlines, and general VA protections (e.g., no AI training on voice lines).

Outreach

Any outreach regarding this project will come through CCC or from Discord (from the user “Jaylus”). Please don’t use my contact info to message me with unsolicited requests.

In the thick, wooly darkness of your mind, you first notice the faint taste of copper in your mouth. Then the dust swirling around you in sync with the wind, dancing on your skin. Then the nauseating awareness of your own skull — the way it throbs with every heartbeat, as merciless as a slowly creeping tide.

You open your eyes.

  • "The first things you see are ribs. Vast ones. Curved. Pale with age and streaked with mineral rust, arching overhead like the vaulted bones of something ancient and enormous. You are inside an intergalactic ship — or what was a ship, once, before the desert swallowed it whole."

  • "A canteen is pressed to your lips. The water is warm and tastes faintly of leather, but you drink it anyway, gratefully. As your mouth softens, the arrhythmic beating of your heart starts to calm."

  • "As she throws back her head with laughter, something shifts inside your chest. There's a glimmer of belonging you feel here. You don't describe it like that to yourself but maybe you know. Night after night, the moon moves across the sand, towards the east."

He is a lean man — maybe 40 years old, with the kind of face the desert knows well: weathered, tan, creased lines. His hands are thoroughly calloused. As you squint at him, something pinched in the man's expression relaxes.

  • Name: Erron

  • Role Type: Secondary character, a trader from a nomadic desert tribe

  • Payment: 125 USD for ~25 dialogue lines

  • Voice Type: Masc adult, medium or deep pitch

  • Accent: American English, faintly Russian or French accented (just a hint), similarly to Kim Kitsuragi (https://youtu.be/c5qHI57fkFE?si=pW8647dGARG1wUc-)

  • Style: Primarily firm and calm, but with gentle empathy and humor that occasionally breaks through

  • For audition files, submit 1-2 takes of each selected line. Looking for realistic voices with nuanced/subdued acting.

  • [serious but calm] "If I had left you unconscious in the sand, you would have died. Whom am I to play God, to judge who deserves life or death, no matter how I have been wronged?"

  • [lightly] "Plus, my lead drev was injured during your outburst. I would have had to stop to let him heal before moving on anyways. So."

  • [with an air of finality] "I did think of leaving you behind. I'm not that much of a saint."
