Flowey is the first major character that the protagonist encounters. Flowey serves as the main antagonist for the Neutral and True Pacifist routes, and could be considered a deuteragonist within the Genocide Route. He introduces the player to the mechanics of encounters by sharing "friendliness pellets," which are actually harmful bullets, revealing his philosophy of "KILL or BE KILLED." He serves as the final boss of the Neutral Route.
Flowey is a sentient golden flower. He has a white center, six yellow petals, and a light-green stem. Flowey can show a variety of expressions and can mimic the faces and voices of other characters. He mimics Toriel and Asgore in some situations, as well as his old self at the end of the Genocide Route. He also mimics the protagonist's face before the Neutral Route's final battle.
Initially, Flowey is friendly toward the protagonist. He greets the protagonist with "Howdy!", calls himself "your best friend," and, like his father, uses words such as "golly" at the end of his sentences. When he is not trying to fool the protagonist into trusting him he will stop using pleasantries and insult them.

I wonder... What happens when something without a SOUL gains the will to live?
Clever. Verrrryyy clever. You think you're really smart, don't you? In this world, it's kill or be killed. So you were able to play by your own rules.
Hee hee hee... I hope you like your choice. After all, it's not as if you can go back and change fate.

Toriel is the second major character the protagonist meets. She saves the protagonist from Flowey and guides them through the Ruins, wishing to protect and to teach them to avoid the dangers of the Underground. Toriel is the former Queen of the monsters, the ex-wife of Asgore, the mother of Asriel, the adoptive mother of the first human, and the first boss, as she guards the Ruins exit.
Toriel is a Boss Monster whose head resembles a white-furred Nubian Goat, structured with floppy ears and tiny horns. She has a pair of visible fangs and long eyelashes, and her irises have a dark red tint. She has an anthropomorphic body, with paws at the end of her limbs. She wears a long purple robe with white sleeves and the Delta Rune on the chest. Toriel can also be seen with reading glasses, when reading a book on snail facts.
Toriel is a kind monster that acts as a protective mother figure for the protagonist. She is sincere in expressing her love through words and actions, such as when she was married to Asgore. She employs tough love on the protagonist and Asgore. Toriel cares for children and was excited to become a mother.

If you truly wish to leave the RUINS... I will not stop you. However, when you leave... Please do not come back. I hope you understand. Goodbye, my child.
Do not be afraid, my child. It is I, TORIEL, your friend and guardian.
Every human that falls down here meets the same fate. I have seen it again and again. They come. They leave. They die. Pathetic, is it not? I cannot save even a single child.
Undyne is a major character and the third boss. Undyne leads the Royal Guard, which protects Asgore and patrols the Underground to find humans. She pursues the protagonist throughout Waterfall, though she is inadvertently thwarted by Monster Kid. This role will include a lot of yelling, please be comfortable with screaming if you audition for this role.

SCREW IT! WHY SHOULD I TELL THAT STORY WHEN YOU'RE ABOUT TO DIE!?! NGAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Hey! Human! If you got past ME, you can do ANYTHING! So don't worry! We're with you all the way!
I don't want you to have to lie to anyone anymore. Alphys... I want to help you become happy with who you are!
Alphys is a yellow, reptilian monster of similar height to the protagonist. Her posture is somewhat hunched over, giving her an appearance of nervousness. She has yellow scales, claws, and protruding teeth (which seem to vary between two and four depending which way she faces). Her feet have three toes while there are three fingers and a thumb on each of her hands. Her "hair" is designed into points facing the back of her head. She normally wears round glasses and a white lab coat. Her glasses do not cover her eyelashes. However, she wears a polka dot dress a friend picked for her on her date with the protagonist.
Alphys is a shy introvert who frequently stutters when she converses. She has low self-esteem, makes self-deprecating comments, and devalues her skills at times. True to her role as a scientist, Alphys is intelligent, analytical, and observant. She occasionally theorizes on matters, and can create thorough plans from them. She can create inventions that use metal and magic, such as a "magical spear repair kit." Alphys is adept in programming, robotics, and mechanical engineering. She is agile when she works a project, and has formal writing when documenting her research.
Alphys is passionate in her work and interests. She often gets excited when sharing her opinions. Alphys's hobbies include enjoying human anime, manga, and video games. Alphys is fond of posting online content, writing walkthroughs for games, though she prefers giving puzzle solutions as a last resort, shipping, and writing fanfiction. Alphys also has crushes on multiple characters of male and female genders. Some of them are mild, such as her crush on Asgore and her compliments towards Toriel, while her most serious crush is Undyne, though she struggles to communicate her feelings.

Ummm... H-h-hiya! I'm Dr. Alphys. I'm ASGORE's royal scientist!
Actually, wait, I have an idea! Let's be friends on UnderNet!
Technically, it's impossible for you to beat him... B-but... Somehow, I know you can do it!!
Mettaton is a major character and the fourth boss. Mettaton is a robot with a SOUL, whose body was built by Alphys. He is the sole television star of the Underground. Mettaton poses as an entertainment robot turned human killing robot in Hotland, though he later reveals the truth to the protagonist at the end of the CORE.
Mettaton originally appears as a gray, largely rectangular box with a 4x5 grid of rectangular lights at the top, similar to the mechanism in Snowdin Forest used for Papyrus's Tile Puzzle. The grid of lights can change colors between red, yellow, green, and blue, and Mettaton uses these color changes in place of facial expressions. He has four dials along the bottom of his body, and the bottom, he has a single leg which ends in a wheel. He has two segmented robotic arms which end in white gloves.
After having the switch on his back flipped in the Neutral or True Pacifist Route, Mettaton transforms into Mettaton EX; a new body he specially requested Alphys make for him. In this humanoid form, he has black hair with a long fringe that seems to cover his right eye, pale "skin" and visible metal segments below and above his left eye.

I'M NOT GOING TO DESTROY YOU WITHOUT A LIVE TELEVISION AUDIENCE!!
OH? HOW SASSY. YOU'RE JUST ITCHING TO GET YOUR HANDS ON ME, AREN'T YOU? WELL... T-O-O B-A-D! THIS WORLD NEEDS STARS MORE THAN IT NEEDS CORPSES! TOODLES!
Ohhhh my. If you flipped my switch, that can only mean one thing. You're desperate for the premiere of my new body. How rude... Lucky for you, I've been aching to show this off for a long time. So... as thanks, I'll give you a handsome reward. I'll make your last living moments... ABSOLUTELY beautiful!
Muffet is a miniboss the protagonist encounters in Hotland. She runs a bake sale, being very angry at passers-by who do not purchase anything from it despite selling overpriced items for 9999 gold. She was a bought-in character during the Kickstarter for the game.
Muffet is an anthropomorphic spider monster with periwinkle or lavender skin, five eyes, six arms, and two legs. She wears red rompers with buttons in the front, a red ribbon across her chest, as well as twin pigtails in her hair. She is also shown holding two teacups with her top pair of hands and two teapots with her middle pair.
Her pet accomplice appears to be a giant muffin with a face on the frosting part as well as spider legs sticking out of the sides.
Muffet is often portrayed as a greedy, stingy, intimidating and somehow hypocritical monster, although having a courteous and sweet way of speaking. Even so, she seems to have a quite malicious aspect on her personality whenever she is crossed, something that occasionally triggers her fight. During her battle, she also has a tendency to cite morbid or inappropriate things, such as commenting on the protagonist's possible fate in being used to make food.

Don't look so blue, my deary~ ... I think purple is a better look on you! Ahuhuhu~
Ahuhuhuhu... You think your taste is too refined for our pastries, don't you, deary? Ahuhuhu... I disagree with that notion. I think your taste... Is exactly what this next batch needs!
What a shame. A human comes through and they aren't even fit to be eaten~ Oh well! Rotten ingredients can always be discarded~
Asriel is the final boss of the True Pacifist Route. At New Home's Barrier, Toriel, other main characters, and monsters stop Asgore's encounter. After absorbing the six human SOULs, Flowey ensnares and absorbs the monster SOULs. Flowey then transforms into his original form, Asriel Dreemurr, intending to defeat the protagonist and restart UNDERTALE from the beginning. However, he mistakes the protagonist for thefirst human.
Asriel's attacks consists of a variety of rainbow and star-shaped attacks. It includes fire, diamond bullets, rainbow-colored straight beams and lightning, and blade swipes. In his final form, his attacks are a mix of rainbow-colored comets and a powerful beam.
After enduring many of his attacks without health depletion, Asriel eventually transforms into his final form. The protagonist is now only limited to ACTing, and all of its options have been replaced with Struggle, which does nothing. After several turns of struggling, the protagonist realizes that they cannot reach their SAVE file and perhaps saving the game is impossible, but with the remainder of their power, they can save something else.
