INT. CRESTVIEW - UNKNOWN CYCLE
The soft ding of the elevator repeats, too calm for the tension in the room. Frantic movements echo in the confined space
THEO
So, what's our plan? I know we want to confront John, but what are we actually going to do?
JENSEN
I don't know. Guess we improvise?
THEO
That's a disaster waiting to happen.
JENSEN
Yeah, because it's not a plan.
(beat)
What he did was over the line. Can you imagine being in the Outback?
(angrily)
Mira's been out there for days now.
THEO
I know, but if we aren't careful, we might end up there too.
JENSEN
At least we'd get to see Mira again.
(beat)
And if we go, we're dragging John with us.
Theo grabs Jensen's shoulders.
THEO
I know you're angry, Jenny, but we are about to rush into the office of a man who controlled us like a marionette.
(beat)
From the moment we stepped into the UPO, John's been ahead of us. He's predicted everything. He's known everything.
JENSEN
Which is exactly why not having a plan will work. We do something he can't predict.
(beat)
Now, let go of me—we're going through that door.
Theo exhales hard, jaw clenched. He releases Jensen's shoulders. The elevator dings again, louder, almost mocking.
THEO
I'll back you, Jenny. I wish you'd think about this more, but if you insist on walking through that door right now, like this...
(exhales sharply)
I'll do it with you.
(hesitates)
Just tell me one thing.
JENSEN
What?
THEO
Tell me you're thinking clearly. I want Mira back, too. But John is dangerous.
(beat)
We can't help her if we aren't protecting ourselves first.
JENSEN
I'm thinking clearly, Theo. Mira deserves better.
THEO
Fine. Then let's do it.
Jensen hesitates—inhales—slow, deliberate. Steadying himself. Then—
The hiss of the door cuts through the air. Sharp. Surgical. Final.
JENSEN
(let down)
Well, this is an incredible outer office.
THEO
Yeah, this is where a psychopath unwinds. It’s too perfect.
(beat)
Not a thing is out of place.
JENSEN
(picking up the plasma pistol)
Not even this...
THEO
(whispering)
Jenny, put that back!
JENSEN
(smiling)
I said we should do something unexpected.
THEO
Yeah, but that's a plasma pistol.
JENSEN
Exactly, it will give us the edge against John.
THEO
Do you even know how to use that thing?
JOHN
(from behind)
No, he doesn't.
Jensen and Theo freeze. Their breath catches.
The door slams, a hiss seals them in the room.
JENSEN
(voice shaking)
Don't move, John.
JOHN
Press the button on the side by your thumb. It will heat the cool blue to a bright white. That means the plasma is hot, ready to fire.
A soft click. Jensen flips the switch.
The plasma whirls intensely.
JENSEN
Why would you tell me that?
JOHN
You want a high stakes game, right? Can't be too high without the right pieces in play.
(beat)
A functioning plasma pistol is your trump card.
JENSEN
I'll shoot you.
JOHN
The probability is very high. But far from certain.
(beat)
At the moment.
THEO
Jenny, give me the gun.
JOHN
Don't.
(beat)
Theodore won't pull the trigger. To maintain your situational advantage, you need to keep the gun.
THEO
That's exactly why I need to take it from him.
(beat)
Jenny...
JOHN
You hand the gun to Theo. I'll rush you. You've lost. Mira's gone.
JENSEN
I can't give it to you Theo. Not yet.
(to John)
I just want to know where you sent Mira.
JOHN
You already know the answer.
JENSEN
Then how do we get her back?
JOHN
Your wrist is slouching. Tighten it. Widen your stance, stagger your feet more.
THEO
Don't do what he says, Jenny.
(beat)
Stop doing what he says.
JOHN
Good. You look like you know what you're doing now.
(beat)
I've also increased your chances of hitting me when you decide to pull the trigger.
JENSEN
Stop. I want to know where Mira is now.
(sharply exhales, voice cracking)
I can't stop thinking about her.
A distorted scream—Mira's voice—erupts in the background. Only the audience hears it. Echoing. Fragmented. Unnatural.
JOHN
I'm going to move now to activate the global map on the table. It will give you Mira's location.
(beat)
Don't panic and pull the trigger. It's not time.
THEO
He doesn't want to kill you. We just want to know where Mira is.
JOHN
He does. But you're smart, aren't you Jensen. You haven't pulled the trigger because you know I want you to.
John moves slowly to the table while speaking.
He waves his hand over the activation switch.
A soft tone pulses. Then the hum of the global map rises—steady, immersive.
THEO
(firmly)
You're wrong.
JOHN
(ignores Theo)
Program, find Mira.
The humming shifts—a brief whir. Then the pulses stop. Silence.
JOHN
The green dot. That's Mira. Green means she's alive and unharmed. I can bring her back any time I want.
JENSEN
(angrily)
Then do it.
JOHN
Steady, Jensen. You're shaking again.
(beat)
She doesn't want to come back. Mira was given a choice. She chose to leave.
JENSEN
I don't believe you.
(beat)
And she doesn't need to come back here. Just get her out of the Outback. She shouldn't be a prisoner.
JOHN
It is shocking, though.
JENSEN
What's shocking?
THEO
(attempts to interrupt)
Jensen, don't. He is controlling you. He always has.
JOHN
You can't get through to him now Theodore. Jensen can't leave without knowing.
THEO
No, Jenny, pull away. Put that down and let's walk out of here while we still can.
JOHN
He's right, Jensen. The story ends if you put the pistol on the table and walk away. It's that simple.
(beat)
No one is making you do anything.
JENSEN
Tell me what's shocking? What could possibly shock the great, all-knowing John?
THEO
Jenny...
JOHN
You sure you want to know? You won't want to leave if I tell you.
Jensen hesitates.
The room silences to punctuate the hesitation.
JENSEN
Y... yes. I need to know.
