The Walking Dead: Comic Dub [VOLUME 7: The Calm Before]

Project Overview

DEADLINE: JANUARY 31, 2021.

The Walking Dead: Comic Dub is a three year endeavor to create video versions (fully voice acted with an original soundtrack) of all 193 issues of Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead. Every week for four years, one of these issues will be posted on the The Walking Dead: Comic Dub YouTube channel

(Disclaimer: You must by 18+ to audition. This comic series contains EXTREMELY mature content, including graphic violence, strong language, and sex. Please make sure you're comfortable with all of those things before auditioning.)

(Disclaimer 2: This project is not associated with the TV show at all! All the voice, sound, music and other creative choices are based on the material from the comic books alone. Keep this in mind while auditioning.)

Voice Acting Information

For those who are cast, a set of six scripts (a volume) will be given at the beginning of every month. They are due at the end of that month.

HERE IS A LINK TO THE FIRST VOLUME OF SCRIPTS. This is the typical length of the material given out every month. If this is a schedule you don't think you can keep up with, then this probably isn't the project for you. How many months this goes on for obviously depends on how many volumes your character is in.

New roles will be available to audition for every month, so check in regularly! The length of time required to portray these roles (ranging from a month [one volume] to 32 months [all 32 volumes]) will be listed alongside the character.

The whole goal is to keep the people playing the characters consistent throughout the whole series. If you don't think you can turn in your lines on time every month for the number of months listed, please don't apply. Even if the character you portray isn't in the next volume, you will still have lines for that month. For example, the character of Morgan Jones is in the first volume, but then isn't seen all the way until the 6th. This means while everyone is on the 2nd volume. Morgan will be on the 6th. Then when everyone else moves on to the 3rd volume, Morgan will be on the 10th and so on until his part is complete.

Auditioning

This project is going for a gritty, realistic, authentic feeling. Approach the audition as such (basically, not cartoonish).

(Please make sure your audio is sounding nice and professional. That means having a quality microphone, ABSOLUTELY NO AUDIO PEAKING/CLIPPING, echo, background noise, or lip smacks. Be sure that you're not too close or too far from the microphone and that when you yell, you really give it your all and don't do any of that "whisper yelling". Y'know, the usual.)

As previously stated, you are NOT impersonating the TV actors, but instead basing your performance on the comic book character alone.

You DO NOT have to follow the voice suggestions accompanying characters. Use them as a guide if you want to, but feel free to completely ignore them.

(These audition lines are long! If your audio file size is too large to upload, try exporting it as an MP3. Otherwise, send me a message.)

You are encouraged to audition for as many roles as you can! There are parts that will most likely be played by the same person (like twins), but there are new characters available to try out for every month. So even if you don't get in the first month you try, you can try again for a different role the next month and the next.

Even if you HAVE been cast, you can absolutely audition for more parts in future months (although your voice will have to be significantly different from your "cast" role).

-----------------------------------------------------------

If you have any questions/comments/concerns/suggestions, you are ALWAYS free to message me! I look forward to your auditions.

Andrea (VOLUME 1 RECAST)

Age: 25-29 (age changes during the series)

Andrea is a main character first encountered in Issue 2 of Image Comics' The Walking Dead. She was the tritagonist from Volume 9 to Volume 28. Andrea is the older sister of Amy and a tough and very skilled woman, being very talented with firearms, and becoming one of the group's key defenders because of that. Once the Atlanta camp fell and she was faced with the death of her sister, she formed a relationship with Dale, who both later adopted Ben and Billy after their father's death. After the deaths of Ben, Billy, and later Dale, she mourned and moved on, forming a romantic relationship with Rick, and becoming a mother figure to his son, Carl.

Andrea was one of the first survivors from the camp at the outskirts of Atlanta to truly adapt to the new post-apocalyptic world order. She quickly became one of the most useful and utilized members of the group. Her most prominent skill is her proficiency as a sharpshooter. Throughout the series, this has come in handy against both the living and the dead being one of the most lethal members of the group. Andrea has been consistently resolute despite all the tragedies that have occurred throughout the series. She is brave and loyal to her allies, not only is she willing to risk her life for her allies she often goes out of her way to do so.

Time Commitment: 2 Years, 4 Months (28 Volumes)

An extremely big role and an extremely important one to Rick (as well as others). She has and long a varied journey throughout the series, becoming more and more integral as it goes on.

Here is a sample of her sister's voice: https://shortcut-test2.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/audition/file_path/1282010/Amy.wav
Andrea COULD sound like an older version of that voice, but don't let this limit your vocal choices at all.

  • "What? I don't know what it's like to lose someone?! I just lost my fucking sister! I think I know a little about the grieving process. I know exactly what you're going through! I shut down when I lost Amy. I didn't speak for days... I couldn't think... I almost lost my mind. You don't have that luxury. Ben and Billy need their father right now! I was just trying to help you, asshole. My sister died, and Shane died, and Jim died! My parents are probably dead! Everyone I've ever known are probably dead! My friends, my family, my neighbors, my co-workers... everyone. Everyone in this group is dealing with that... we're surrounded by death. It's taken over our lives. And there isn't a goddamn thing we can do about it! We either deal with it or we don't and right now your sons need you to deal with it... and get over it. They need you! Think about them!"

    - Andrea absolutely furious at Allen.

  • "The fuck are you doing, Rick? Dive behind a car--make a move--give me a signal, I can get this guy. No. Three shooters at least... someone would die... could be more out there... van might not cover you from all of them. Okay. Smart. But stay smart... get out of this alive. Please. You'll get out of this. We don't die... you and me... that's the rule. We don't die."

    - Andrea talking to herself while covering Rick with a sniper rifle.

  • "People still need you. You have to keep doing what you're doing. You have to stay strong! Otherwise...otherwise this was all for nothing... If this all falls apart...and it will without you...why did you fight so hard? You've built something...important. You have to keep fighting for it no matter what. These people are counting on you -- you've been a shining beacon...in a world of darkness. You've made an oasis in a world of shit. You've made it possible for people to work together...to be a community...to be stronger... That makes you stronger. You'll keep going. You have to. That's what these people need. That's what this world needs. And that's...that's just what you do."

—Andrea to Rick Grimes, reminding him to stay strong, during her final moments.

Age: 19-23, 43-48 (age changes during the series)

Maggie Greene is a main character first encountered in Issue 10 of Image Comics' The Walking Dead. She is the sole surviving member of the Greene family, girlfriend-turned-wife of Glenn, and mother of their child, and after Carol's death, she becomes the adoptive mother of Sophia.

She's shown herself to be both physically and emotionally weak, relying on Glenn for protection and comfort. She often struggles with her own insecurities as well, worrying about what people (including Glenn) think of her, even within the most least affecting situations, and trying to hide her emotions so as not to have her weaknesses be fully exposed. Maggie grows severely independent and hardened over time, mostly after Glenn's death. She is shown to stand up for what she believes in and has become an important voice in the survivors.

Time Commitment: 2 Years, 5 Months (29 Volumes)

A gigantic role that is hugely important and lasts the entirety of the series.

She has a southern accent. Here is what the previous actor sounded like (as 19-year-old Maggie): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1abTnKzPgjtZFa8NS3IWDosrmMkX78lrR/view?usp=sharing

While not strictly necessary, a voice/performance similar would definitely be preferable. Don't worry about it too much though.

  • "It's difficult--It's... okay, the truth. You deserve the truth. The scar around my neck is gone... but I still feel like you still see it. I feel so naked in front of you. You know me... you know everything. You see me, not what I want to show you--Who I want to be. You know about the darkness I have inside me."

—Maggie (age 19) opening up to her boyfriend, Glenn, about her suicide attempt.

  • "You think I don't see what you're doing?! You're trying to get sympathy from me. You don't get to play the reasonable, calm man after everything you did! I'm not fucking falling for it! Can you picture her face? Your wife's? Can you hear her voice? Every time I try to picture Glenn's face, all I can see is him screaming my name... with his skull bashed in and his--his eye hanging out! When I hear his voice, it's screaming my name--garbled, in agony--that's my memory of him. And with that... I see you smiling."

—Maggie (age 23), passionate and rage-filled to Negan, her husband's murderer.

  • "That's not our world anymore. That's all behind us now. Am I saying no one will ever be bitten again? No... I'm sure it'll happen, but that doesn't mean things go back to how they were. You need to let go... for your own sake. Live life and be happy. Enjoy the world your father helped make for you... for all of us. Stop looking for danger around every corner. It's just not there anymore."

    —Maggie (age 43-48) to Carl.

  • "Come on--I've got to get you out of here. I can't let them just kill you. I won't. Stand up. We've got to do this before they come back. You're crazy. Not evil. You need help. What they want to do to you is wrong."

    —Patricia helping Thomas escape.

  • "Help me! Somebody help! Why did you have to do that? I was going to help you!"

—Patricia's reaction to Thomas immediately attacking her.

  • "Miss him? Yeah, I miss Otis. But I miss Shawn and Lacey and Arnold and Rachel and Susie. I even miss that guy... what was his name? Allen--I didn't even know him. I miss Dexter and Andrew... I miss everyone we've lost. Everyone. There's too many of them and too few of us. "

Age: Late 40s

Dr. Stevens (first name unknown) is a character first encountered in Issue 28 of Image Comics' The Walking Dead. He is the head doctor and a resident of Woodbury. Stevens and his young assistant, Alice, treated all of the citizens of the town who were sick or injured, as well as those who participated in the arena duels despite his many protests. He didn't agree with the Governor's views or beliefs, especially with what the Governor was doing with the town's newest visitors

He COULD have a mid-range voice and/or COULD have an older, slightly more "intelligent" voice, but don't let these limit your vocal choices at all.

  • "What the hell is going on that you have to drag me here this late? You better be dying or-- Jesus! What happened to your ear? Who is this man? I've never seen him before. Is this another victim of your goddamn arena fights? He's lost a lot of blood. I can close his wound pretty easily but I'm going to have to go into the blood reserves to keep him alive. Can you send someone to get Alice? I'm going to need some help with this."

—Stevens to the Governor as the Governor brings him an injured Rick.

  • "Philip. His name is Philip. He was a good man. Emphasis on was. Started out, he was tough but he got the job done. Philip emerged as the leader of the group very quickly. He did what had to be done to keep people safe. After a while, it was clear to some of us that he was doing this more out of enjoyment than the need to protect us. It was clear he was little more than an evil bastard. I can't even talk about his poor daughter. What do you think he'd do to anyone who opposed him? I hate the son of a bitch but I can't do anything. Whatever else he does... he keeps these people safe. That's enough for most people. As long as there's a wall between them and the biters they're not too concerned with who's with them on their side of the wall."

—Stevens to Rick about the Governor.

  • "I'm not dying... think of it... scientifically... I'm just... evolving... into a different--worse life form. I'll still exist... in some way. Take the supplies... you'll need them to take care of these people. Use what I taught you. Go."

—Stevens to Alice, struggling after being bitten.

Age: 34 Days

Judith Grimes, also known as "Judy", is a character first encountered in Issue 39 of Image Comics' The Walking Dead. She is the newborn daughter of Lori Grimes and Shane, the half-sister of Carl, and the adoptive daughter of Rick. Judith was the second child born of Lori Grimes and the first infant depicted as having been born after the outbreak. As one of the few people so far to have no memories of a world without the horrors of the outbreak, her parents expressed hopes that she would not live in constant fear as they do and accept the post zombie world as the way things were without referencing the way things used to be.

Now, this is a really weird ask. Not even sure if this role will even be cast at this point, but if someone is able to replicate realistic sounding baby noises with their voice, then it might be a nice alternative to stock baby sounds. If no one is found, then stock baby sounds it is!

  • "Nyaaa. Oungh."
—A slightly uncomfortable Judith in Rick's arms.
(This is a real quote taken directly from the comic. Try your best to match the words while still sounding authentic.)

Zombies (Volume 7)

Zombies, mostly referred to in-universe as walkers, monsters, roamers, geeks, lurkers, biters, muertos, infected and empties, are an antagonistic force that serve as the primary catalyst for the events within The Walking Dead universe. They serve as universal antagonists.

Reanimated human beings, while not immortal, will not "die" under typical conditions that would ordinarily cause the death of a living person. They do not appear to feel or respond to pain, can survive even the most brutal injuries, and despite their bottomless appetite for flesh, they do not need food, water, or sleep to survive.

They show no other bodily function that relates to a human, showing no signs of self-healing or response to extreme temperatures. The brain maintains limited abilities of the body, allowing for movement of the limbs (provided that they are not decomposed to the point where the bones are not strong enough to bend without breaking), jaws, neck, and even the use of its sensory systems. While the walkers are notoriously weaker than humans, the only way to kill one is to destroy the brain. Despite severely weakened frames, they will continue to hunt for living animals to consume. Even when decapitated, the head will remain active, even though it would be practically harmless at such point.

Time Commitment: 2 Years, 2 Months (26 Volumes)

That time commitment figure is actually just the maximum amount of time you might be working. Zombies are played by multiple people (any gender) and a new person to play zombies is cast every month. Essentially, you can stay with the project for a long or little as you like.

Every month, one more person will be cast and added to the group of zombie voice actors, so if you audition for zombies previously and weren't cast, be sure to re-record/resubmit your audition this month (to show that you're still interested and active.)

Zombies have sound written out in text form pretty specifically in the comics. Your job is to match the essence of what those words are trying to convey as exact as you can, while still sounding like a roaming, compulsion-driven zombie.

Not all the sounds are coming from the same zombie. The zombies' voices COULD vary in pitch and maybe in texture. Have fun with this one and try different things!

  • "Uungh. Guk. Glakk. Gar. Uhh! Uhh! Uhh! Ruh! Uhh. Gak. Ruh? Guh. ≡CHOMP≡ ≡SLURP≡ Uh. Ugh. Grr. Rrgh! Ruugh!! Whugh! Garr! Roagh. Augh. Gruh. Hmgh! Wuagg!"

    - Zombies in a variety of different situations

(Try to match the words pretty exact while still sounding natural)

  • *Make a variety of zombie death noises*

(dying to axes, gunshots, neck cut open, stabbed, slow deaths, long deaths, etc.)

  • *Make any other zombie noises you would like to show off*
