The Recall Program
Project Overview
This project, “The Recall Program,” will be a four-part episode of our thriller / horror anthology series The Midnight Zone.
This story follows a grieving husband and father who enters an experimental neuroscience trial called The Recall Program. The program allows participants to relive memories from their past with realism. At first, he sees it as a miracle: a chance to be with his wife and children again. But as the simulations become harder to leave behind and he begins to lose his grip on what is real, what is memory, and what he’s willing to sacrifice to stay with the people he lost.
This story is a sci-fi psychological thriller drama about grief, memory, obsession, and the dangerous comfort of living in the past.
Note: This is an unpaid collaboration. We’re a small group creating for the love of storytelling, building connections with other creators, and making cinematic audio dramas. We’re always excited to work with voice actors, indie projects, and like-minded creatives.

Male - Lead Role
Sean is a grieving husband and father who has emotionally shut himself off from the world after the death of his wife and children. At the beginning of the story, he is quiet, disconnected, and barely functioning. When he enters The Recall Program, he experiences something that feels impossible: he gets to see and touch his family again.
At first, the program seems to heal him. But the more time Sean spends inside the simulations, the more dependent he becomes. Obsessed.
Sean requires a strong emotional range. The performance should feel grounded and natural, not theatrical. He starts off numb, to hope, to dependence, to panic and frantic obsession.

Emma is Sean’s late wife. She appears throughout the story through memories, simulations, and eventually as a voice inside Sean’s mind. In the memories, she is warm, soft, funny, loving. She should feel like someone Sean would risk everything to see again.
As the story progresses, Emma’s voice becomes more complicated. Sometimes she is comforting. Sometimes she becomes unsettling, almost manipulative, pulling Sean deeper into this obsession to relive the moments together.
This role needs warmth, intimacy, and emotional subtlety. Not like a generic “ghost wife.”

Do you think people mean it? When they say 'forever'? I know what it means. I mean... when someone says it to somebody else. Like, It's kind of a ridiculous thing to promise, right? People change, Things happen, One day you wake up and you're not exactly who you were when you said it.. But it's still real. Maybe it's just a really long time. To me... It means.. I don't want a version of my life where you're not in it. And if there's an afterlife, I'll find you there.

Dr. Beckett is the lead scientist behind The Recall Program. He is intelligent, controlled, and deeply invested in the success of his work. He believes the program can change the world. He also believes he knows what is best for the participants, even when his choices become morally questionable.
Beckett is not a mustache-twirling villain. He’s calm, professional, and persuasive. He can be reassuring one moment and cold the next. He believes in the program so much that he can justify the damage it causes. But also has the protective professionalism to know when to back off.

It's okay. I can handle this. "How's this work?" Great question, actually. Let me ask you a question. Do you ever feel like you are losing touch with the past? Important moments that you can’t remember? It may be hard to come to terms with but, by the time you’re fifty, you’ve forgotten more of your life than you remember. entire days, months, conversations, people. The human brain is like an incredibly complex storage system. A bank of memories, experiences, and sensations, all stored away. Even ones you don't remember. Now imagine it as a computer, constantly recording and organizing everything we see, hear or feel. That's where our work comes in.. What if you could relive moments from your past life?
Basically, our system reads electrical patterns in your brain as coding. Then, neuro-connectix will take the codes and fill in the gaps and translate it into a simulation. (CONT'D) Think of the potential benefits for mankind. We can preserve the past in ways that were previously unimaginable. See history through the eyes of those who lived it. Heal people of past traumas, keep the memories of lost ones, a tool for law enforcement. We could do so many things.

Mira works closely with Dr. Beckett and helps run the Recall trials. She is smart, professional, and guarded. At first, she seems like a loyal assistant, but as the story continues, it becomes clear she has her own complicated relationship with the program.
Mira has also been using the technology in secret. She understands Sean’s dependency more than she wants to admit, becoming a key character to the main character’s arc. Her arc is built on: duty versus empathy, and self-preservation and secrecy versus doing the right thing.

Cogni-tech labs. We work primarily in experimental research in neuroscience and engineering. You'll have a scheduled time for your tests. Between them, you'll have access to the patient sections of the facility, as will others. Such as, the cafeteria, gym or you may take the elevator up to the observation lounge. You'll be issued a device, all of your sessions will be logged there for you to see.

Claire was close friends with Emma before she passed and cares deeply about Sean. She’s the one that helps connect him to The Recall Program, believing it might help him process his grief. But when she sees how attached Sean becomes to the simulations, she realizes the program may be doing more harm than good.
Claire is compassionate, grounded, and emotionally careful. She does not want to hurt Sean, but she is willing to say the difficult thing when she has to.

(VOICEMAIL) It's me. again. Keep leaving these.. hoping you'll answer. I've been thinking a lot. about you.. and Emma.. Especially with- Well, It's almost been a year since we lost her. I'm sure you're feeling it too. (Pause, Sigh) I wanted to talk to you about something. I've been doing some work with this neuroscience lab that I think could offer us some help. It's new, not available to the public yet. But I may have an 'in' for you. I know you're hurting. And honestly, I'm to the point where I feel like if there's a chance this could help us find a way to move forward, even just to see if it helps. It may be worth it.. Hang in there. Let me know if you need anything. Hope to hear from you…

Lucas is another participant in The Recall Program. He has been there much longer than Sean and has clearly seen things go wrong. He’s bitter, closed off, and quick to shut down any questions. Lucas serves as a warning of what Sean may become.
He is not friendly, but not one-noted. He knows the program is dangerous, but he has also become trapped by it.

(LUCAS) Look, obviously you're new, I get that. I'll cut you some slack. But, you need to keep the sessions they give you and keep your mouth shut. got it? It's not some amusement park ride where you get to keep going back as much as you want. There are limits, you get in line and wait you turn. (SEAN) Is it like a secret or something? I wouldn't tell if that's what you're worried about. What'll even happen if I ask? (LUCAS) I don't care what happens to you. (SEAN) You're scared. (LUCAS) Ha! I've seen so many people come and go. You're no different.. There's plenty of white coats right over there just itching for something to do, they'll answer your questions. Here, watch.
