The Moss

The Moss

Project Overview

Hello to all you talented people out there! Welcome to the casting call for “The Moss”. We are The Lemonade Stand, a young writing duo now working on their first big project; a fairy tale podcast focused on storytelling and audio drama. And that’s where you come in! We're casting for a batch of currently needed voices to be used throughout the series.

This is a school project that we intend to grow further after graduation, but for now we need some main- and supporting roles.

Applicants cast for main roles will be asked to provide lines for additional, smaller roles with only a few lines. Feel free to try for multiple characters if they catch your eye! It's possible to be cast for more roles, particularly a main and a supporting one. There will also be multiple accents listed in some characters descriptions; if you come across it, feel free to choose between them.
If you're not cast for a main role, and your voice matches the tone of the series, we may ask you to provide lines for supporting roles in the production.

Sadly, we won't be able to distribute any pay as of yet, as this is a student project to begin with. We hope for it to grow into monetization so we can potentially deliver proper pay!

For more official art on the characters and such, head over to @luciferslemonade on instagram!

PODCAST OVERVIEW
“The Moss” is a fantasy themed podcast about a bunch of characters' adventures in a sealed off wood, filled with mystical beings of all sorts. The series will be produced in the form of an audio drama featuring voice acting, songs, atmosphere and sound effects, as well as the main characters being accompanied by an ominous narrator. The main story and plot line will interlope with other small adventures between characters, as well as potentially a joke/meme voiceover here and there.

Some subjects may be sensitive, such as descriptions of blood and gore, as well as pained voice acting.

With that being said, you will be expected to be able to act out a variety of intense emotions, enact intoxication, as well as some silly goofiness.

DEADLINES AND AUDITIONS

The deadline for auditions is July 12th, 2020. There are currently no plans to extend this deadline, as the first batch of scripts are ready to release to voice actors. We'll notify voice actors who have been cast in roles by July 22nd and send scripts to voice actors by July 26th. We need to receive all lines back from voice actors by August 10th. If you are unable to record between July 26th - August 10th, please do not audition. Feel free to contact us if you have any concerns!

EDIT: With recent discoveries and potential complications, the deadline in which official lines must be recorded and sent in may be prolonged. We will discuss this once all roles have been casted, seeing the situation for each person.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Once you are cast for a role, you will be added to our discord server, as it will be our primary medium of communication. There, we’ll get to know each other a bit, and we can discuss your assigned characters or any questions you may have!

If you don’t have a discord account, we strongly suggest that you create one as this will be our main medium of communication.

We will start with the recording and production of six episodes, more to be written later on.

Keep in mind, Luciel happens to be a fellow voice actor in the project as well! If you want to practice along with them, hit them up and see if they’re free.

Luciel resides in Sweden, and Zeke in america. Time zones can suck, so expect there to be a very slight delay in certain times of communication. Don't worry; we'll get to you as soon as possible!

We may contact you after casting and recording for extra gags and fun work!

The way we record lines will preferably go in a manner of interacting live in a call, either in a group or one on one, when recording a situation where more characters are present and are interacting. This is to increase the liveliness of the dialogue, as well as increasing the fun by interacting with each other! All who are involved need to keep their eyes peeled and keep their schedule clear so we can record our lines together.

WHAT WE ASK OF YOU

  • First and foremost, have fun, of course! Though we take the job very seriously and expect you to as well, we wish to create a friendly, laid-back environment to have fun and learn in! None of this means anything if we aren’t passionate as can be!

  • You need to have access to a good quality microphone with clean sound. No air-conditioner or fan buzzing, etc. So we don’t have to clean up the recordings too much and risk ruining voice quality. Also, leave the post-production cleanup to us!

  • Three takes is the best standard, but its okay to send more; don’t include those you don’t want featured.

  • You may cut your takes down to your favorites. Three takes for each line is the best standard, but it’s alright if you want to send in more. Don’t send us anything you don’t want featured in the podcast!

  • When sending in your script recordings, send them to our official email address in either .mp3 or .wav format. The email will be provided to you in the discord server after casting. If the file is too big, use WeTransfer to send it.

  • We will likely ask for line-redos' from time to time, but only after careful consideration and absolute necessity. We value your time!

  • As stated previously, we may ask for you to take other extra-roles that appear once or so in addition to your main role.

  • We want voice actors who are willing to stick around a while, since we have more episodes and seasons planned, and we’ll likely continue past graduation. Please don’t apply unless you are absolutely sure you’ll be able to commit. We may even turn to you for a future project!

  • We are looking forward to working with you! Keep a positive attitude, let’s have fun with this!

  • Auditions are closed!

Hello everyone! The auditions are now officially closed! And we must say, WOW. We did NOT expect this kind of interest. 449 auditions! Seriously everyone, thank you for this amazing response; it's incredibly heartwarming. There will be extremely hard decisions to make, seeing as you all did an amazing job! You all have bright futures within this and we're looking forward to working with some of you. Now, I'm (Luciel) also offering to give feedback or constructive criticism on your audition if you'd like! Just go ahead and PM to let me know and we'll have a chat. • Closed roles

Hello everyone! I'm sure most of you may know this, but just in case to avoid confusion, I want everyone to know that when I close a role, it simply means I've made up my mind and/or have gotten enough submissions. I don't want anyone to think that when a role is closed, noone who tried for that role got it; Zeke and I decided early on that we would wait until the same date to let everyone know if they were cast or not. I'm sorry if this lead to any confusion! Good luck everyone, and again, thank you for this incredible feedback! - Lu

Kind and free spirited, very energetic, emotional and happy. Tends to be straightforward with what he says and doesn’t quite understand when’s the right time to make a joke. He will at times slip into a pirate-like accent when he’s speaking quickly. You may also try for him with an Irish, slight French, or English accent.
He's canonically autistic.

When he's drunk, he still speaks almost normally although slurring some words together, just with more laughter, stutters and sluggishness in his tone.

Voice Reference: Elijah Wood

  • [You're excited about showing your friend to a festival] (Excited) I just know they’ll love it, as I knew since they were young! They’re the sort to like gatherings and such. Now with tons of magic on the list, heehee! They’ll be so happy!

  • [You just came across your injured friend in the middle of the night] (Panicked) Holy- OH MY GODS YOUR ARM! Are you alright?!

  • [You're drunk and having an insightful conversation with your drunk friend in a tavern, later checking to see if your sister agrees] (Slurring and immersed) That's soOOO poetic- like they- they’re too stuck doing the same thing over and over ‘till it’s the eASIEST and th- the- riGHT- [...]

Sour and pessimistic most of the time. She speaks with a mocking and often snooty tone, but can also go into a stressed motherly role. Teases a lot and brutally honest. She often has a lot of energy in her voice. Speaks fluent french. You may also try for her with an irish, french or english accent.

Voice Reference: Tiffany Haddish

  • [You're having sarcastic banter with a friend, while disguised as a human, much to your dismay] (Sarcastic, bitter; almost muttering/sputtering, but still speaking clearly) And I’m going to pretend I’m not forcing myself to be trapped in a nasty flesh container.

  • [Your friends have had a little too much to drink, and you need to get home before dark.] (Matter-of-factly, kind of laid-back tone) Oookay you two; time to go. [Pause as the other responds] Yes! It’s almost dark and we need to get home.

  • [You just found out that your friend did something really stupid and reckless] (Surprised, exclaiming) WHAT?! How in the two moons did they get away with THAT?!

Often very professional in her tone, rather serious and frantic. Sassy and sarcastic, worried middle-aged mom friend. Would not know how to pronounce “meme”, but she tries her best; she can be loose and fun when you get to know her. Articulates her words a lot and speaks academically, with a sort of eccentric push to her tone. She enjoys singing a lot.

You are expected to be comfortable with and having a skill in singing.

Voice Reference: Riann Steele

  • [You're waiting for your friends to come inside and help you work] (Yelling, cranky) THAT’S WAY MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES, YOU TWO. YOU BETTER HAVE LOTS OF BERRIES BY NOW OR I WILL GO ON A RAMPAGE.

  • [You're scolding your apprentice for being irresponsible on the day of a lesson] (Impatient) You have responsibilities. And on top of that you wasted my time by making me wait for you, time I could’ve spent on preparations for the blue moon festival- But… (defeated) oh well, it’s nothing I should get in a twist for. Let’s get you sobered up.

  • [You're trying to convince your apprentice that this lesson will be exciting] (Enthusiastic) Oh but it is! Beetrat puss will melt your hands away if undiluted and if you don’t use the right gloves! It’s very dangerous, hehe.

Deep tone. Eloquent word choice, tends to range from sounding mysterious and calm to sarcastic and humorous, but always returns to their eloquent speech style. A classic narrator trying to make things sound interesting, especially by speaking poetically. Their voice is deep, mystical and clear; imagine how an old, wise dragon would speak. They use they/them pronouns, and are nonbinary.

  • [You're describing a beautiful morning] (Descriptive, normal tone, mystic) Morning falls, bird calls, and a zephyr travels along the ever-so-green leaves of whispering honey locusts. Sunlight dapples, a beautiful scene, and songs of birds fill the air; bees buzzing, honey drips, and a pirate stirs.

  • [You were interrupted by an unknowing character] (Muttering, sarcastic) Alright, self-proclaimed messiah, find out yourself…

  • (Slow, intense) Oh, lady of the lake, what do you think? Deep, sunken eyes, in the deep, sunken sea…

Calm and serene, rarely gets upset even when facing difficult people and situations. Sounds sure most of the time, though they can get nervous easily. They are normally quiet and soft, and easy to talk to, but they aren’t used to a lot of social interaction. Articulate and well-spoken, though they can and will slip into colloquialisms. Their pronouns are they/them, and they are nonbinary.

You are expected to be comfortable with singing.

Voice Reference: Janaya Khan

  • [Your patient is moving around a little too soon] (Calm, airy voice) Be careful, you don’t want to agitate your wounds more.

  • [Your client commented on some flowers growing from your cheeks] (Bashful, explaining) Ye-yes, these are normal, heheh. They, uh, show how I'm feeling. It’s sort of the human equivalent to, let’s say… blushing! But for every emotion.

  • [You're teasing your client a bit when they try to give you a nickname] (Laid-back, good humor) Are you thinking of something to call me? (Beat) Captain is fine.

Often nervous and paranoid. Young-sounding, stutters at times and speaks relatively quickly, but can get aggressive in tone and behavior. Not very used to speaking to people, but uses rather advanced vocabulary and speaks academically despite his anxious nature. Very panicky and anxious. Can come off as blunt or rude but means well. Can speak a norse language fluently, like swedish or icelandic. You may also try for him with a viking or posh british accent. He's basically a posh viking.
 He is almost entirely blind.

You are expected to be able to growl, howl and whimper, as well as grunt and hyperventilate. You are expected to be able to express intense physical pain, and express feral behavior. Don't worry if it's not perfect; we can edit it to a certain degree. You are also expected to be comfortable with singing.

Voice Reference: Tom Holland

  • [You were just pulled out of your hiding place by a stranger, after a particularly stressful day] (Panicky, fed up, yelling) raAGH! WHY IS EVERYONE TOSSING ME AROUND LIKE A BLOODY RAGDOLL?!

  • [A person is socializing with you, but they interrupted your reading. They're apologizing, but the book was kind of NSFW anyway, much to your dismay] (Flustered, jittery) I was just going to, er, go over to the book stands, actually, as they may have something more interesting and less… (suddenly disgusted) rude.

  • [You're calling out some higher-up peoples prejudiced statements targeted towards you, and it hits you very personally] (Very emotional, angry and almost sobby) For your BLOODY information, I did NOT ASK FOR THIS. Just as YOU didn’t seem to THINK to ask ME, NO? I’m your living source!

The embodiment of chaos. Think of the mad hatter in eccentricness, and as a chaotic, cheerful character screaming no matter what time of day; that’s Keloron. They’re mostly a bright-speaking loudmouth and speak quickly and clearly. Speaks with lots of confidence, enthusiasm, and never sounds unsure. Rarely gets serious and sounds cheerful almost no matter what, and will call you out on your bullshit with style. They use they/them pronouns, and they are nonbinary.

You are expected to be able to laugh menacingly as if you are a supervillain, as well as yell hyperactively as you are indeed a force of chaos.

Voice Reference: Rainbow 2.0, Steven Universe

  • [Your "apprentice" won't shut up in a situation where shutting up would be beneficial] (Yelling aggressively) What did I just FUCKING say? (Pause as the other reacts, suddenly cheerful) Delightful! Let’s go, then.

  • [Your superior is being rude to your newly-obtained companion] (Cheerful, slightly condescending) Ah-ah-ah! Now don’t be rude; this is my apprentice. Just obtained, as you said.

Speaks with a snobbish and dramatic flair, pretty flamboyant. Mostly very condescending or grumpy when they speak to others, almost as a dramatic villain. Tends to go grumbly and mutters when they’re feeling genuinely upset. Can speak french. You may also try for this character with a french or north american accent. This character uses they/them pronouns, and is nonbinary.

NOTE: They only have a singular line in the first batch of episodes to be recorded, but we hope you will stick around! Maybe you can even get more roles and interlope between them; hold on tight!

You will be expected to be able to sound blank and hollow in certain scenes.

Voice Reference: Joey Batey

  • [You don't understand what the other person just said to you, and you don't like the feeling] (Snobbish, scoffing) Tsch, speak the language of people, vermin.

  • [You're talking smack about people who get bitten by werewolves] (Accusatory, yet mocking; small mocking laugh at the end) Only an absolute motley-minded LOUT would have the minds to go into a wood at full moon, principally ASKING to get themselves bitten by such a beast!

  • [You're having a conversation with your supposed nemesis, who apparently admires the way you talk] (Surprised, you're speaking with short spurts at first. More genuine later on.) Well. Thank you. And I suppose… you have your admirable ways as well.

The rather conservative head witch of the official Witches Council of Mana. Stern and prejudiced, mainly towards humans. Tends to keep composure and isn’t the type to get too loud, though she will get heated when it comes to her people. You may audition for her with almost any other accent, but not north American. She uses rather hard consonants and softly rolls her R's.

You are expected to be able to sound intimidating, but also sound kind and drained.

Voice Reference: Shohreh Aghdashloo

  • [You are preaching about protecting your home and people to your fellow council members] (Serious, gets more passionate/angry towards the end) We can cure so many things. Heartbreak, wounds, a clouded mind... but fear, fear is incurable. Especially fear that has grown into hatred. And the humans, they are consumed by it, and they can and WILL hurt our people if they get too close!

  • [One of your council members is very late, and it is far from the first time] (Irritated) You’re insufferably late.

You are expected to be able to go from a silent to a booming voice, as well as sound absolutely menacing at times.

Hello to all you talented people out there! Welcome to the casting call for “The Moss”. We are The Lemonade Stand, a young writing duo now working on their first big project; a fairy tale podcast focused on storytelling and audio drama. And that’s where you come in! We have already posted an ad for voice actors, but now we're in need for audio editing.

In the beginning, we didn't expect that we'd need audio editors for this podcast, but it turns out we need some help. This is due to the instability of the global pandemic COVID-19, as well as school.

Unfortunately, we won't be able to distribute any pay as of yet, as this is a student project to begin with.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Once you are recruited into our project, you will be added to our discord server, as it will be our primary medium of communication. There, we’ll get to know each other a bit, and we can discuss your role in helping this project come to fruition or any questions you may have!

If you don’t have a discord account, we strongly suggest that you create onas this will be our main medium of communication. Please keep in mind that we will expect regular check-ins to make sure the audio is as we imagined.

On top of this, the two directors are in different time zones. Expect there to be a very slight delay in certain times of communication. Don't worry; we'll get to you as soon as possible!

So far, we've recorded 2 out of 6 episodes so your work should be fairly light.

We may contact you after you've finished your work with us for extra gags and fun work!

WHAT WE ASK OF YOU

  • First and foremost, have fun, of course! Though we take the job very seriously and expect you to as well, we wish to create a friendly, laid-back environment to have fun and learn in! None of this means anything if we aren’t passionate as can be!

  • Three takes is the best standard, but we've allowed the actors to add more if they wish. We will tell you which one we want as the final take. But they tend not to send in anything they don't want featured.

  • When sending in your drafts, send them to our official email address in either .mp3 or .wav format. The email will be provided to you in the discord server. If the file is too big, use WeTransfer to send it.

  • We want audio editors who are willing to stick around a while, since we have more episodes and seasons planned, and we’ll likely continue post graduation. Please don’t apply unless you are absolutely sure you’ll be able to commit. We may even turn to you for a future project!

  • We are looking forward to working with you! Keep a positive attitude, let’s have fun with this!

WHO ARE WE?

The Lemonade Stand? Just a couple of kids who have a dream. Luciel, also known as luciferslemonade, is an aspiring cartoonist & voice actor with approximately 200 characters, and the family is ever-growing. They’re currently studying and unemployed, except if they’re commissioned (@luciferslemonade on instagram for more information). Zeke, also known as hauntfish, is an aspiring author and regularly participates in writing competitions at their high school and on Write The World. In their spare time, they are a photographer (@hauntedmoonsuit on instagram for more information). They’re a full time student and work a part time job. Together, they compose detailed stories and create diverse characters, all with their own thick plots and backstories. With your help, they can make this unique story come to fruition.
