The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Audioplay

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Audioplay

Project Overview

"When Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder. Much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with odd markings. This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons-and keeping the odd werewolves and vampires in line. It's also her first meeting with gorgeous, golden-haired Jace. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in an ordinary mundane like Clary? And how did she suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know..."

Written by Cassandra Clare, The Mortal Instruments series is one of my favourite young adult series of all time. I plan to begin this project pretty casually, but I would like to at some point complete not only the entirity of this series, but also the Infernal Devices series. A casting call will be posted for that as well as other introduced characters when the time comes.

Latest Updates

  • The project unfortunately must be CLOSED

According to various legal and personal reasons, i must shut down this project. I hate to do this before it has even begun, especially considerng all the amazing talent that has auditioned, but it's really for the best. Thank you for your efforts, and I hope you go far in your own pursuits and endeavours.

  • Casting Begins on August 4!

I will officially cast parts starting tomorrow! I am casting roles on two platforms (CCC and BTVA), as well as picking alternates/understudies.

The full cast list will be in the updates section of this CCC project as well as the comments section of the BTVA page. So get the word out, and get your auditions in quickly!

  • Welcome to the Audition Page!

Firstly, I'm adding in most of the main characters that will likely be recurring throughout the whole series. All the characters so far appear throughout the series and have their first appearances in City of Bones, with gentle exception to Magnus who first appeared in COB and continues to appear in every Shadowhunter book ever. After I get all of them in, I'll add in smaller roles as several extras cast placements(ie. the Pandemonium bouncer, Simon's bandmates, the demon boy at Pandemonium, etc.). If you get cast as an extra, I would still like to remain in contact with you for future roles, big or small.

That said, I wish all future auditioners the best of luck!

Role assigned to: Joshua Magill

Age: 36

Alec, Isabelle, and Jace's tutor at the New York Institute, cursed to never be able to leave for being a former member of Valentine's Circle.

Bass register, American or British accent

  • (kindly) Unfortunately, we are all out of bitter revenge at the moment, so it's either tea or nothing.

  • (informing) When the Downworlders saw the Clave turn on Valentine and his Circle in their defense, they realised Shadowhunters were not their enemies. Ironically, with his insurrection Valentine made the Accords possible. (take a beat) I apologise, this must be a dull history lesson for you. That was Valentine. A firebrand, a visionary, a man of great personal charm and conviction. And a killer.

  • (begin with a short laugh, then have a slightly weakened, yet menacing tone) I fear Valentine more than the Clave, and so would you, if you were wise.

A demon that posseses Madame Dorothea near the end of the book

Bass placement or alto placement. If you want to include a vocal effect, please do a take with and without the vocal effect. American or British accent.

  • (menacing) Shadowhunter, I shall take pleasure in killing you, in hearing your bones crunch as your friend's did.

Age: 42

Mother of Clary Fray, and former wife of Valentine Morgenstern

Middle/Low Register, American accent

  • (worried) I've been calling him and calling him for the past three weeks. His voice mail says he's in Tanzania. What am I supposed to do?

  • (defensive) Clary, don't you think we should talk about this?

  • (terrified) Valentine's not dead.

Protagonist

Age: 16

The Shadowhunter daughter of Jocelyn Fray and notorious Circle leader, Valentine Morgenstern.

High/Middle register, American accent

  • (begin like you're telling a story, then get sort of frustrated) The dark prince sat astride his black steed, his sable cape flowing behind him. A golden circlet bound his blond locks, his handsome face was cold with the rage of battle, and...and his arm looked like an eggplant.

  • (jokingly) Is this when you start tearing strips off your t-shirt to bind up my wound?

  • (defensive, but level and calm) No, I'm not. I'm Nephilim-just like you.

Age: Around 400 years

The High Warlock of Brooklyn, whose life has notoriously intertwined with Shadowhunters and Downworlders alike over the centuries

Tenor placement. Asian-American accent. Try to avoid being stereotypical-I only describe his voice as asian-american because I don't want Magnus's heritage lost, even though this is an audio project. For placement reference, listen to actors Godfrey Gao or Harry Shum Jr in this role as examples and then try to find your own placement from there.

THIS ROLE WILL REPRISE IN THE INFERNAL DEVICES PROJECT AS WELL AS ANY OTHER SHADOWHUNTER DUBBINGS. BE PREPARED FOR A VERY LARGE ROLE

  • (annoyed) Move over, teenagers! The only person who can canoodle in my bedroom is my magnificent self.

  • (exasperated, then flirty) I'd say it was a pleasure to meet you, but it wasn't. Not that you aren't all fairly charming, and as for you-call me?

  • (grave) If you insist on disavowing that which is ugly about what you do, you will never learn from your mistakes.

Antagonist

Age: 39

Husband of Jocelyn Fray, and father of Clary Fray. An advocate against Downworlders, Valentine led The Circle with the main goal of exterminating them from the world. After his initial failure, he turned his attention to reform Shadowhunters as a whole.

Bass/Baritone register, American or British accent

  • (amused) I never knew you to be so fond of children, Starkweather.

  • (explanatory taunting) Morgenstern means "morning star." As in "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

  • (pained) I tried to save you from yourself, Lucian. I made a grave mistake. If only I'd had the strength to kill you myself, you could've died a man.

Age: 38

Born Lucian Greymark, Luke is a werewolf who was formerly a Shadowhunter and member of Valentine's Circle before he was betrayed by Valentine, his parabatai. He helped Jocelyn escape to New York and raise Clary

Bass/baritone register, American, British, or Irish accent, feel free to mess with those placements.

  • (fatherly) Clary, you're an artist, like your mother. That means you see the world in ways that other people don't. It's your gift, to see the beauty and the horror in ordinary things. It doesn't make you crazy-just different.

  • (weary hatred) The only thing endangering her is you. The only thing that ever endangered her was you. She's spent her life running to get away from you.

  • (storytelling) He was handsome, clever, rich, dedicated, and an incredible warrior. I was nothing-neither rich nor brilliant, from an unremarkable country family. And I struggled with my studies. Jocelyn was a natural Shadowhunter; I was not.

Age: Unknown, but presumably young

A Shadowhunter and Silent Brother who was called by Hodge to recover Clary's lost memories.

Baritone/tenor placement. Have a hollow, eerieness to your voice.

If you want to put an effect on it, please do a take with and without the vocal effect. American accent.

  • (haunting, informative) Those who die in battle are burned, their ashes used to make the marble arches you see here. The blood and bone of demon slayers is itself a powerful protection against evil. Even in death, the Clave serves its cause.

  • (ambivalent) It is likely that she had the assistance of a warlock in her dissappearance. Most Shadowhunters cannot so easily escape the Clave.

  • (eerie) The Brothers of the Silent City do not lie. If you want the truth from me, you shall have it, but I shall ask of you the same in return.

Age: 17

Clary Fray's best friend and a mundane when introduced to the Shadowhunter world

Tenor voice placement, a Greg Cipes-esque rasp or vocal fry would be cool. American accent.

  • (response to a cry of "Jesus!") Actually, it's just me. Although, I've been told the resemblence is startling.

  • (gentle) I know your mom. I mean, you and I have been friends for what, ten years now? I know she gets like this sometimes. She'll think better of it.

  • (angry, losing his cool) I was trying to make you jealous! You're so stupid, Clary. You're so stupid, can't you see anything? (beat, keep the anger, but it's weakened) I've been in love with you for ten years, so I thought it seemed like time to find out whether you felt the same about me. Which, I guess you don't.

Age: 16

Shadowhunter of the New York Institute. The only daughter of Robert and Maryse Lightwood and sister to Alec and Max. Izzy is flirtatious, fiery, and more than capable.

Middle/Low register, American or British accent.

  • (envious, but good-natured) You're so lucky to have such a flat chest. I could never wear that without a bra.

  • (airy, nonchalant) Oh, he's rude to everyone. It's what makes him so damn sexy. That, and he's killed more demons than anyone else his age.

  • (anxious and a little drunk) I'm not! Well, maybe a little, but that's not the point. The point is, Simon drank one of those blue drinks. I told him not to, but he didn't listen, and he turned into a rat!

Age: 18

Narcissistic, lethally gorgeous, determined and expert Shadowhunter on a mission for revenge.

Baritone/tenor with a slight "heartthrob" vocal fry, American or British accent

  • (sarcastic and a little irritated) Don't tell me. You have a drawing emergency and need a nude model. Well, I'm not in the mood.

  • (even, but emotional. Build up to a cry) You left me when I was a child. You let me think you were dead and you sent me away to live with strangers. You never told me I had a mother, a sister. You left me ALONE.

  • (mock offense) A diary with no drawings of me in it? Where are the torrid fantasties? The romance novel covers?

Baritone/tenor register, American or British accent

  • (defensive big brother) Did he do something to you? Did he touch you? If he tried anything-?

  • (broken control, furious, mundane is used as an obscene slur) He left me behind! Normally, I'd be with him, covering him, watching his back, keeping him safe. But you-you're dead weight, a mundane.

  • (tongue-in-cheek remark) I kind of doubt he sent a Ravener demon to her house because he wants to "get back together."

  • (informing, a little knowingly, but playing a scared mundane) I know what they look like. They are paler, thinner than human beings, but very strong. They walk like cats and spring with the swiftness of serpents. They are beautiful and terrible, like this hotel.

  • (menacing grinning, with a knife at Clary's throat) You think we do not hear the rumors, the news that is running through Downworld like blood through veins? Valentine is back. There will be no Accords and no Covenant soon enough.

Age: s o o l d, but has retained the appearance of a young adult since the 1800s

SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS OR THE INFERNAL DEVICES. If you don't care to see them or known this information already, keep reading.

Brother Zachariah was the name used by Shadowhunter Jem Carstairs during his time among the Silent Brothers. He only has one appearance in COB, but is a major role in the later books as well as the prequel series, The Infernal Devices, so I went ahead and included him in this casting call in order to keep things consistent.

As Jem, he is kind, passionate, and his smile hides a tragic past. As Zachariah, shades of Jem show through a typical Silent Brother persona.

Tenor placement, British accent

  • (Zachariah, musing) It is an interesting puzzle, admittedly. But there is no need for the use of force if you do not resist.

  • (Jem, gentle and passionate) London isn't horrible, you simply have to get to know it. You must come with me out to London someday. I can show you the parts of it that are beautiful-that I love.
