The Left Right Game (fandub)
Project Overview
The left right game is a beloved reddit story originally posted to r/nosleep.
It tells the story of reporter Alice Sharma, who agrees to play the left right game with paranormal enthusiast Rob Guthard after he submits to her radio show.
The game is simple, if you follow the rules. Take the first right turn you see, then the first left turn you see. Never miss a turn, never take the wrong turn.
If the game is so simple, why do they need so many supplies? Food, extra gas, ammunition, toolkits and first aid... with six cars and a convoy of individuals assigned with codenames.
"We're coming up to a tunnel soon. Any time before we reach it you can get out, walk in any direction you like, and you won't be in the game no more. After that, there ain't no going back."
//this is a supernatural horror audio drama. There are scenes with high emotional and physical stakes for these characters, and tense moments. I recommend reading the story before auditioning.

(Journalistic narration) They say great stories happen to those who can tell them. Robert J. Guthard is an exception to that rule. As I sit at his table, sip his coffee and listen to him recount the past 65 years it sounds like he's reading off a shopping list. Every event, his first job, his second wedding, his third divorce, none of them receive more than one or two sentences. Rob plows through the years, the curt, dispassionate curator of his own personal history. Yet the story itself is so fascinating, so rich with moments and so wildly meandering that it somehow stands on its own merits. It's a great story, no matter how you tell it.
Rob, just a second ago, when you told us the next turn was coming up. Why did you use the word "trap"? / I have it in my notes. You said, "Folks we're coming to the end soon, first little trap's coming up. Our next turn is sharp left as we leave. Look out for it." Is there a reason you used the word "trap"? / He thought the road was trying to deceive him?
(Out of breath. Exerted and injured, Alice has climbed back out of a ditch to use the radio to signal)Bristol to all cars. Lilith you need to get moving. Bluejay heard us. She's not listening now but she knows I'm meeting you near the clearing. Get yourself back here ok? Lilith can you hear me?
A young man posting the audio logs and text files he received, putting notes at the start. Went to university with Alice and is a young man living in the UK. Various UK accents should work, as long as they are realistic and not overexaggerated.
This role will only have a quick narration at the beginning of each part.

A few points before we start. Firstly, I am not the protagonist of this story. I just went to university with her, and though she went on to become a professional writer, I most certainly did not. She'll be taking over from me further down but, until then, please forgive my slightly awkward delivery while I give you guys the necessary context. Secondly, I don't know what you will make of the following events, and I'm sure many of you might consider it all some sort of hoax. I wasn't present for any of what transpired in Phoenix, Arizona but I can vouch for the person who wrote the following logs. She is not, and has never been, a fantasist.
Hi Guys, Firstly, I want to apologise for not being at my laptop for the past few days. I had to attend a wedding in Scotland for one of my uni friends. They booked it in mid-week and, between you and me, I don't think it's going to last which means not only have I neglected you guys, but I've also wasted money on a rental suit and a John Lewis tea set.
Hi Guys, It's been a long week, but I've finally got to my computer to post the next log. I've been working overtime to afford both London rent and Christmas presents. Hasn't been fun. Anyway I can't say much more since this log's one of the longer ones. I'll try and get the next one up a little sooner. Thanks for all your help.
A 65 year old man, his codename during the game is Ferryman. After living in Japan for a while following the Vietnam War, he developed an interest in the supernatural. He found the left right game on a forum, and has packed up to move to Phoenix in order to carry it out. He has recruited a team to take part in this expedition. He seems hard headed, with a rough-around-the-edges personality, but his stubbornness makes way for genuine care in the right circumstances.
Described by Alice: "They say great stories happen to those who can tell them. Robert J. Guthard is an exception to that rule. As I sit at his table, sip his coffee and listen to him recount the past 65 years it sounds like he's reading off a shopping list. Every event, his first job, his second wedding, his third divorce, none of them receive more than one or two sentences. Rob plows through the years, the curt, dispassionate curator of his own personal history."

Well I ain't gonna ask you to believe me. But I was a Pl. Professional cynic. Even I can't deny there was a spirit in those woods. / It walked up to me through the trees. Looked like static you see on a TV screen but it had a human shape almost. / It was missing an arm. It reached out to me but I bolted outta that forest so fast. Hiroji never saw it, holds it against me to this day.
I'd be disappointed if you weren't thinking something like it. But now we're on the road I gotta say something and you gotta listen to it. / We're coming up to a tunnel soon. Any time before we reach it you can get out, walk in any direction you like, and you won't be in the game no more. Once we go through, you gotta retrace the route we took to get yourself back out that tunnel. That's when you're home. And you gotta convince someone to take you back in a car coz I ain't ferrying you back 20 minutes in. You got till the tunnel to skip out on this, understand?
He's dead, Eve. Two guys in the tow truck coming outta Jubilation. They got him. They took him back with them to the town. Way they were treatin' him he won't last long. / (after the other members of the team keep insisting they turn back around and try to save Ace, he snaps, hurt and frustrated but stubborn): When I saw him being carried away with a fucking tow hook sticking out his mouth! Goddamn it.
Minor supporting - Ace is a young man who accompanies the convoy with his Porsche. He doesn't get much time shown, but he shows curiosity about the trip and displays regret and anxiety after revealing he drove past the hitchhiker.

Can I... can I ask you something? It's... it's ok if you need me to go home after... Does the hitchhiker... does anything happen if you... if you don't pick him up?
I... I was making my way down the road and, I was angry at how you'd been... and when I saw the hitchhiker I thought I should, you know, do what I said and... just drive by. A minute later I look in the rear view mirror and... and he's sitting in the back of my car. He's just... just talking about the weather. I mean I swear I didn't pick him up, but when I think about it all these memories come back. I start to remember pulling over, letting him in. It's like I did it, but I didn't even...
It's my car. What am I meant to do,? It's my car. / I did read it sir OK? Calm down. I have a bag, I won't ask you for anything.
Supporting - A social, confident man who goes by the moniker of Apollo for the trip. He drives a range rover and is shown to be pretty level headed, a casual guy who trusts Rob's judgement.
I've come out of Chicago. Took three days hard driving. / (Asked if he knows Rob) Everybody knows Rob, Rob's the god! Ahaha
They aren't gonna last much longer. It takes a second for the road to get you, that's how they got so far ahead before they stopped. I drive out, they jump onto my car, then we climb back. / You got the winch right? If I drive out with it bunched up on my lap I can make sure it never goes slack. Then I hook it up to my roof bars and we get the hell outta dodge.
(Trying to reassure) It's ok. Its ok. Go on, its ok. / (becoming more shaky but trying to maintain confidence)It's... it's alright. Just get going ok? It doesn't hurt... it doesn't hurt, really. / (panicking) oh god. Rob! ROB!!
Supporting - Linda, going by the codename Bonnie, accompanies Clyde/Martin on this trip. The two are siblings, older librarians from Minnesota. Linda was a wild child growing up, Martin said, but after her husband passed away she is quieter and more reserved. They share ghost hunting as a hobby.
After speaking to the hitchhiker, Linda becomes obsessed with the idea of a town he told her about. She becomes an obstacle due to her obsession, eventually having to be restrained with zip ties.

I didn't want to cause any trouble, a... and Clyde's been looking forward to this trip for so long I didn't want us to turn back. I'm sorry.
Well I... he thanked me and then he was just... so easy to talk to and I thought, "Well I've already talked to him, what will a few more words do?" / He told me about this wonderful place. Wasn't it wonderful Martin? / Just a few houses by the sea, but he made it sound so nice.
Please! PLEASE! Let me go! Let me go! / He told me it was on our way! He said we'd pass through! / No... no we're going the wrong way. We're going the wrong way!
Supporting - Supporting - Martin, going by the codename Clyde, accompanies Bonnie/Linda on this trip. The two are siblings, older librarians from Minnesota. Martin seems sensible, and takes care of his sister but is the more talkative of the two. They share ghost hunting as a hobby. Both seem shy at first.
Clyde withholds the information that Bonnie speaks to the hitchhiker until she becomes irate about missing the turn. Instead of telling Rob, he made the excuse that Bonnie was senile so they wouldnt have to turn back and go home.

Hah well it came pretty easy. We used to play outlaws when we were kids, one time Bonnie stuck up a bank. / Well, no it was an ice cream parlour. But Bonnie was pretending it was a bank and then she ran in, holding her hand like a gun. Told Mrs Gilford it was a stick-up.
It's all you talk about Bonnie. You... you mentioned it a few times after... and since Jubilation you ain't stopped.
MAJOR - Jen goes by the codename Lilith. She's a student from New York University who ran a YouTube channel with her friend, Sarah, who is also on the trip as the codename Eve. Jen and Eve are extremely close, but Jen is aware of Eve's romantic feelings and doesn't reciprocate but (non maliciously) takes them for granted. Jen is sociable.

I really mean everyone, Bristol. While Eve's been driving, I've been calling; my camera's automated support line, 911... / For science, yeah. All of them are busy. I even called this guy at my dorm who has a serious thing for me and, trust me, he is not fucking busy. This is weird right? It's like we've crossed a threshold and the world's suddenly... doing something else. You know?
Ok firstly, I don't like your fucking tone. Secondly, have you noticed that we've been the only cars on the road for almost two days? And what about Jubilation? Are you suggesting Rob hired out a whole town? That would be fucking impossible
Sarah!! Come on, please!! Please Sarah, I need you here...
MAJOR - General antagonistic figure.
Denise, codenamed Bluejay, is a professional skeptic dedicating her career to debunking the paranormal. She entered the mission under false pretenses and from the beginning to the end, believes it is all a hoax put on by Rob, then everyone. She starts a bit cynical and sarcastic, finding humor in it all, but her mental state devolves. It goes from believing everyone is just actors, to a state of delusion or psychosis where she believes the "perpetrators" have killed real people, endangered real lives. The final confrontation is between Alice and Denise, who has taken Rob's shotgun and taken down both Rob and Lilith.

(Through barely restrained laughter) Do you close your eyes for magic tricks too? / Oh the time is well fucking overdue. Seriously are you all morons? The Left/Right Game is a hoax. It's fake! Rob Guthard's played you all like fucking children! Ace is fine, he's probably an actor! Like the hitchhiker was an actor and those towns people too. I mean, come on! / It was a blood filled squib. The rifle was probably loaded with blanks. You can buy both from any good theatrical retailer. Seriously what the fuck is wrong with you people?
I was up in the night, watching you all. What a surprise when I saw you leave with Clyde, and come back alone, calm as a fucking grave. I don't know if Clyde was in on your little game but he sure as fuck wasn't happy with how far you've taken it. He had to go didn't he? / I just want you to know, that I am not falling for your fucking game. But you will not turn me around, and if you try ANYTHING like that with me... I. Will. Fucking. Kill. You.
(In response to Alice's message over radio in the final confrontation) Bring me my fucking key, Alice. / ...She's here. / Hah what?! No no. No you're not going to trick me again, Alice. You don't get to confer. You get to bring me the key to my fucking car, and then you get to walk yourselves back home. Now what about that do you need to fucking discuss?
*Say something you think would fit*
The daughter in law of Rob, taken by the road along with his son. Appears as the grey woman seen throughout the story.
He wanted to leave me so I cut him out. The lake was hungry it drank the wound clean.
Would you dance down the lion's tongue? It will shred you, you whore! It will shred you down to your sins! You fucking bastard!
You're just a fucking disappointment aren't you.
I can tell you everything you want to know. Even the things you never knew about yourself. Even the thoughts you didn't know you were thinking... those little critters, all the way at the back.
It's been a busy week in Jubilation as we welcome in our new School Principal, a very impressive guy who's bringing some new and interesting proposals to our community. It's got a few people talking about funding for the arts, if you got a view we'd love to hear it.
