Forbidden Fruit (working title) Episode 1
Project Overview
'Forbiden Fruit' as I am calling it for now, is a radio drama set in an English boarding school in 1951. The story focusses around Tabitha Becket, a 15 year old girl who was expelled from her previous school for experimenting with another pupil. Starting afresh at Blithe Academy, Tabitha knows that she cannot risk showing her true identity but this becomes a struggle when she meets fellow student, Alice Pearson; a girl who also desperately tries to deny her sexuality.
Blithe Academy is a well-aclaimed girls' boarding school and takes in girls from around the country, therefore, when I specify 'English' accent, I mean from any part of the country, not just the stereotypical Southern accent! (this includes Scotland, Wales and Ireland)
Please note that many of these parts will be multiple episodes and you will need to be dedicated to this project.

Esme's side kick- Freya is very much dependant on Esme and will follow her hand and foot, agreeing with her and doing whatever pleases her.
I can hardly believe it! It seems like yesterday we were joining the first form!

Alice is a scholar at Blithe Academy. Despite being a highly intelligant girl, Alice is often in trouble at school for her extravagent behaviour. Alice hides behind her humour, taking on a role as class clown to hide her loneliness and longing for a friend who understands the real her.
(Speaking quickly and excitedly, not pausing to let her speak) Pleasure to meet you, Tabby. You don't mind me calling you Tabby? Great! Tabby it is!
(gently) It was you, wasn't it? The girl who got kicked out of Beaumont.
I'm starting to feel that I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not. And... for the first time in my life, I don't hate the real me.
Esme is a stuck-up, concieted and impulsive girl. Having never taken a warming to Tabitha, Esme soon becomes an antagonist- going out of her way to upset the new girl by any means neccesary.
(Lying, trying to scare Tabitha) Don't forget to tie your hair back- last year a new student went to see the head with her hair down and when she came back it was cut up to her chin!
Did you hear about what happened at Beaumont Academy last term? Two girls were caught kissing in the dormitories. Disgusting if you ask me, obviously, they both got expelled immeditely. I wouldn't be surprised if the police didn't get involved.

Tabitha's mother. Only appears in episode 1. Warm lady, sweet voice, but quite stern when talking about Beaumont.
No, no, no! You are not a zombie, Tabitha! Be friendly. Smile. Politely say: ‘How do you do? My name is Tabitha Becket’. Yes dear?
I mean it. This isn’t fun and games anymore. Everything that happened at Beaumont is in the past, you are not that girl anymore, understand me?
(tearing up) Well, goodbye dear. I hope you have a wonderful first term. Do keep in touch. Be good. Goodbye my darling. Goodbye.
The headmistress at Blithe Academy. A prim and proper lady who shows little personality infront of the girls. She doesn't appear much in the series, but does make the odd appearance throughout.
Do take a seat, Tabitha, I am Mrs Flemming, your headmistress. Now, please don’t look so nervous, this session is just to welcome you to our school and answer any questions you may have, yes?
Tabitha's form-mistress. Yet again, appears occasionaly throughout series but is not a main character.
Well, Tabitha, you’ve come at an unfortunate time, you are the only new girl in the fourth form, but you mustn’t worry, our girls are very welcoming and will settle you in just fine.
Tabitha's 'big sister' when she arrives at Blithe. Phillipa is a polite and serious girl; she is work-focused and generally friendly with everyone.
(How long have you been at Blithe?) Since the first year, when I was 11. And how nervous I was! Oh look, here is a compartment with some seats. Hello Freya, Esme, Maude... How were your summers?
(shocked) Alice! What on earth have you done to your hair?!
(frustrated) Laws are set by people who know how to make things run smoothly, I think you should trust people more, Tabitha.
Born in America, Maude came to England with her family 3 years ago and began her secondary education at Blithe in the same year. Maude is a kind-hearted girl who believes in equality among the races, genders and wealths. Maude is the first person to figure out Tabitha's secret and supports her- encouraging her to be herself.
Don't laugh about it, Esme. I feel awful for those two girls, they were only being true to themselves.
Tabby, you can trust me. I know you're hurting, just tell me what's wrong. I want to help you.
(Angry, standing up to Esme) If God didn't want there to be gay people, why would he create them in the first place?
Tabitha is the series' protagonist: she arrives at Blithe Academy having been expelled from her previous school. Tabitha tries to hide her past and start at her new school afresh, but she struggles to keep her secret when she meets fellow student, Alice Pearson.
It won't be like Beaumont, mother. I promise.
(aggrivated) It's nothing like that, Esme, I just don't think love is a crime.
(nervous, explaining her past to Maude) It happened just the once: we were alone in the dormitory and... she asked me if I'd ever thought about kissing another girl. I said, 'well... yes'. I'd always wondered what it was like but it was nothing more than that. She asked me if I'd like to try. I was scared and I had this horrible feeling in my tummy but I was also excited. When she leant over and pressed her lips against mine I felt like... like this was me. I'd finally found my real self. All the nerves and anxiety just escaped my system and I was flying! But, it was as she leant in for another kiss that the door swang open and I knew we were doomed.
