RECAST - The Assassin's Blade - Audiodrama: The Assassin and the Underworld

Project Overview

Hello everyone,

My name is Renara Hawke, and I’m looking for enthusiastic and passionate voice actors to join me in creating an audio drama project for YouTube.

I’m currently producing an audio adaptation of the award-winning Throne of Glass series. My goal is not only to introduce these stories to a wider audience, but also to make them more accessible to people who may not have access to premium audiobook services.

The project will begin with The Assassin’s Blade, the prequel to Throne of Glass, which is made up of a collection of novellas.

Due to the structure of the project, casting will take place novella by novella for The Assassin’s Blade. Once we move on to the larger novels, auditions will be conducted chapter by chapter. This means there will be plenty of opportunities to join the project as it develops, with additional roles becoming available in the future.

I have already completed the first three novellas, The Assassin and the Pirate Lord (Original), The Assassin and the Healer, and The Assassin and the Desert, and we are currently working on The Assassin and the Underworld.

You can listen to the completed novellas, as well as follow the progress of the project, at the link below:

Auditions info:

  • This is an unpaid project. At this stage, I’m unfortunately not in a position to offer payment for the work. I completely understand that this may not be suitable for everyone, and I appreciate your understanding.

  • Please provide 2 takes in ABC format. I like to hear some variation between takes, as it helps me get a better sense of your range and how you approach the character.

  • Please consider the long-term commitment. Depending on how the project develops, this could mean returning weeks, months, or potentially years later. So, if you are cast, please keep this in mind.
The expected turnaround time for the first round of submitting lines will be relatively short, approximately one week. After that, you will need to remain contactable for potential retakes, additional Foley, and sound effects as each chapter is produced and released.

Audition Rules & Requirements

  1. Recording Quality
Please use an XLR or other good-quality microphone and recording setup, or have access to a professional studio or external recording facility.

  2. Clear, Clean Audio
All recordings must be clear and easy to understand. Please ensure there is no background noise, clipping/peaking, distortion, or unwanted audio artefacts in your submission.

  3. Returning Characters (RC)
If you are cast as a Returning Character (RC), you will be expected to return for future parts of the project. Depending on how the project develops, this could mean returning weeks, months, or potentially years later.

Please keep this in mind when auditioning. I’m looking for actors who will remain enthusiastic about the role and the project, even if there is a significant gap between appearances.

  4. Discord Required
You must have Discord. If you are successful in your audition, you will be added to the project’s Discord server, where we will discuss further details about the production, characters, scripts, and upcoming work.

  5. Voice & AI Protection
To establish trust and protect everyone involved, each VA will have an individual agreement with me outlining how their voice may and may not be used. These agreements will specifically safeguard your voice from being used for AI training or AI-generated voice replication without your consent.

I want this project to be a space where voice actors can feel secure about their work and where we can stand together against the use of AI in ways that threaten voice acting as a profession.

  6. Most Importantly — Have Fun!
Give the audition your best and, above all, have fun with it. I want to see your enthusiasm, creativity, and passion for the character.

Thank you for taking the time to read through everything, and best of luck with your audition!

Latest Updates

  • Phase 1: Auditions

Hey all! I just wanted to post a small note about what to expect when you audition this side of the deadline.

Until the deadline, I will be sorting auditions into two categories: Those to be considered and those to be immediately rejected.

If you are immediately rejected, it is because your audition fell into one or more of the following categories:
    - Your audio/acting quality is too poor for consideration.
    - You did not follow the instructions laid out above.
    - You did not follow the character brief, and your interpretation was too misaligned from the fundamental parts of her character.

If you have been rejected, that does not stop you from resubmitting with an improved revision.

In some cases, I will reach out once to help rectify minor mistakes as part of the audition process.

After the deadline, there will be a phase 2 for auditions that are shortlisted, focusing on team synergy and your ability to take live direction, so keep an eye out.

Any auditions submitted AFTER the deadline will be rejected immediately and won't be listened to.

Background:
Described as almost feline, Lysandra is the most renowned courtesan in Adarlan, having risen from a street orphan to become “the most anticipated courtesan in Rifthold history.”

Sultry, sweet, and effortlessly charming, she is exceptionally skilled at reading people — but her courtesan persona is largely a facade. Beneath it, she is a survivor who despises the life she was forced into and the way the world values her only for what she can provide physically.

At this point in the story, Lysandra and Celaena are childhood enemies, each fighting to claim whatever power and control they can in a world that was never made for them.

Voice Description:

Lysandra’s voice is mid-to-high range with a BRITISH/ENGLISH accent. Her delivery should be confident, decadent, and wilful, with clear speech that isn’t overly RP.

She naturally commands attention, though she may occasionally lean into her courtesan persona when appropriate. The role will require strong vocal dynamics as Lysandra develops throughout the series, allowing the VA to grow into the character alongside her.

Vocal Example
Similar to Angelina Jolie's English voice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTmrlm0Ta3Y
- You don’t need to match this exactly; this is just an example of the general tone and feel I have in mind

IMPORTANT

Lysandra is a pivotal character throughout the series, with major moments in Books 4, 5, and 7. This is a long-term role, and I do not intend to recast her again.

While we are unfortunately recasting the role from the original actress, I’m not looking to replicate her performance; I want to see what a new actress can bring to Lysandra and make the role her own.

Please also note that, despite Lysandra’s background as a courtesan, the audio drama is completely SFW. No VA will ever be required to perform NSFW or sexual content. If any later scenes are more intimate, they will be adapted to maintain this.

Please only audition if you are comfortable with the long-term commitment.

  • (Distain for Celaena, changing to sultry) - "I thought you'd been packed off to the desert. Is it possible the summer has passed THAT quickly? I guess when you're having so much fun ...

  • (Leaned in, speaking quietly in a theatre, mockingly) – “Celaena, I didn’t know you had a shred of human emotion in you, and I didn’t think the performance was THAT good.”

  • *A terrified set of screams after Celaena just threw a dagger at you that nearly pierced your head*
