Tales from the Lumberwoods
Project Overview
Welcome to Tales from the Lumberwoods! This project is based on a bunch of oc's I've had living in my head for a while, combined with a recent passion for the Fearsome Critters of the Lumberwood! These are wacky little cryptids created by the boredom of American Lumberjacks! I adore them, and thought there was so much storytelling potential! This show follows our four protagonists, Annika (The Leader; a short witch), Lorelei (The Brains; a dead tree), Ember (The Heart; A living shadow), and Squid (The Brawn; A walking Jellyfish abomination.) Throughout the series, we watch their relationship deepen, dark secrets are revealed, people are hurt, wounded, and healed. The four were assigned by Moth Man to venture into the Lumberwoods to track down fearsome critters, and invite them to their safe community. I am a avid writer, but lack any artistic skill. I need artist! Literally. Any. Artist. Don't be afraid to audition for any role, we can learn and grow together! Thanks for considering my silly critter story!
Also, just a warning- this series will not shy away from intense subject matter. I struggled a lot with my mental health in the past, and want to use whatever stories I put out there as vessels for breaking stigma and increase accurate representation. This includes taboo subjects such as Suicide. If any of this is upsetting to you, then this might not be the right project. Also, I ask for anyone who auditions for writers or artists roles be at least 13, preferably 15+.

I am... not an artist. But I adore animation. I need someone who not only is a hard-working artist, who can produce quality work, but can also help me direct and lead the art department. Annika is a short witch with a big personality. Her hair is very long though, it’s a dark red/purple, she keeps it in an upside-down braid. She wears a vest and belt pouch with a bunch of different potions well-compartmentalized.
Personality wise, Annika is a bit stand-off-ish and defensive when you first get to know her. She is very protective of the people she cares for. She is very much fight first and asks questions later. She doesn’t get vulnerable often and has trained herself not to cry. Her goal is to prove her worth to MothMan. She is a great innovator, creating potions by her own design. She's also dating Lorelei.

Determined Lines: Guys, cut it out. Stay focused. Mothman said there was some strange activity about twenty-three miles west of the lake. ...... No! Mothman trusted me- us, with this. We can’t go back empty-handed.
Sassy Lines: (To Squid) And you, my friend- are just lazy. (To Squid) Your a walking abomination. (To Ember) You're dead to me Ember. (To Squid) You’re a smart cookie, figure it out.
Other Lines: Ugh! I- I need to make another potion! What was it… Squonk Tears for the acidic component, FBB Fur… and, shit what else? - You think it’s funny to hurt my friends?! Why don’t I take one of your arms, huh?!
Lorelei is the spirit of a dead tree, similar to a Druid- except she is a ghost, not just a symbol of nature. Lorelei’s entire body is transparent, faintly green. Her upper body is defined, and her torso down wraps up into a ghastly tail. She has incredibly bright blue eyes, short curly hair that spirals like branches and leaves, and vines twist around her entire body. She also has branches that perk out of her head like antlers.
Personality wise, Lorelei is a living, or well- dead contradiction. She is shy, reserved, and well-mannered to strangers and those she is wary of. She was hurt a lot in her life, so she is very guarded. However, to a select few, primarily Annika, she is the exact opposite. She is hyper, eager, always excited but always nervous. She is pretty pessimistic and can be paranoid. She can be so silent she goes mute in front of strangers. Her main problem is self-doubt. She is the "Smart One" in the group, but can freeze and shut down if she gets anything wrong.

Oh no! No, no, no! The humming is deceptive, the volume isn’t correlated to distance, the only way we can get through is stunting it, and the only way to stunt him is to guarantee the mixture makes full contact. - LORELEI No! No, it’s too dangerous! I- I could be wrong, the snakes came and, I- I was too slow! If the Whimpus wasn’t there you would all be gone and I can’t afford to screw up again!
Aw- that’s adorable! Lovebug! (Annika: Don't make this a thing.) LORELEI Too late! Come here! Who’s my little lovebug!
Ugh- this is insufferable! You don’t have to whine and whine we get it you screwed up… Look, maybe instead of wallowing in your own self-pity, you can actually learn and fix it! Maybe you- maybe… we can grow from our mistakes, instead of beating ourselves up for them.
Squid is wacky. They are literally a walking Jellyfish on land for some reason. They can also float. But they like to walk.
Personality wise, they talk a whole lot considering they don’t have a mouth. They are pretty bossy, and don’t really take accountability. They are pretty insecure about their identity, not knowing who they are, who their family is, etc. They are also super extroverted, but fierce, and would take any chance to fight someone for the fun of it. Despite acting like a little shit, they love their friends and would do anything for them.

Lorelei! Get a grip! Whatever, you screwed up- just be better now and help me! Shoot, I’m, I can’t think good but, I can- I can fly! And I can hit things! Can I hit it? Come on nerd, you can do this in your sleep. Stop doubting yourself and be useful for once!
Ember is Literally a shadow when stuck in the 2D plane. But when she has a physical form, she has black hair with orange highlights, and is average build.
Personality wise, Ember is the most chill one of the group. She just vibes. She usually handles a lot of the talking when it comes to meeting new people and interactions. They are chill but also aren’t very expressive. They are seen as the one who has their shit together, so they feel like they aren’t allowed to express their feelings. Feelings of fear and despair can overcome new people who meet them, which causes Ember to be a bit avoidant- she doesn’t want to hurt others. She is very insecure about her past and identity, not because she doesn't know who she is, but because who she is supposed to be is evil. She was incredibly lonely and depressed before she joined the community. She was happy for awhile, but part of her feels like she is supposed to be alone, that’s her purpose, and she secretly hates herself for receiving love (sort of like imposter syndrome.)
Be aware that Ember suffers from suicidal ideation which will be a major plot point we will not shy away from, if portraying this would make you uncomfortable, please don't audition.

Based on the infamous cryptid Moth Man. He is a large, intimidating, gray creature with beautiful Moth Wings and glowing red eyes.
Personality wise, while he is seen as evil, he actually is a very caring creature. He doesn’t speak of himself highly; as despite being the founder of the community, he does not want to come across as self-righteous or full-of-himself. He doesn’t go out much and is honestly pretty awkward when it comes to casual social interaction. But he took all the misfits under his wing and made them feel safe.
He is the strongest of them all as a fighter. He is weak to daylight, being nocturnal. Also, he is comically distracted by lights.

Do you ever wonder where the tall-tales of the wilderness come from? Werewolves, Witches, Jackalopes, Thunderbirds, The Jersey Devil? Were the hundreds of Bigfoot sightings just illusions of the mind, or is there truly something lurking, just beyond your line of sight… well, I hate to break it to you kid, but the things of your nightmares have never been confined to the mind. In fact, we’ve always been here.
My kind have always terrified. We were given many names, Monsters, Cryptids, creatures of the night, abominations. You assume we’re hunters, predators, lurking in the darkness, about to strike. And while some of us surely do that, I’m more of a library-dwelling guy myself. I was one of the most feared creatures in my time, I still am. But I never hurt anybody. I tried to help, actually- but most just ran away because I was strange to them. With humans trying to hunt us left and right, and all the critters, big and little, feeling like monsters- I said enough of this. And I turned this wood into a sacred, safe place for not only the cryptids, but for any creature who feels unseen, who feels isolated, alone. After all, when home cannot be found, don’t lose hope. For it can always be made.
And so they brought back the once presumed fearsome, Whirling Whimpus- in reality just a really, really sad boy. He’ll be right at home here. And they also proved themselves. Perhaps it’s time I give them a real challenge…
