Heir to the Empire is the first novel of Thrawn Trilogy which tells 5 years after the Battle of Endor, the death of Palpatine and Darth Vader. Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo and Mothma are building a New Republic as they have driven the Empire to the far reaches of the Galaxy.
But the last Grand Admiral of the Empire, "Thrawn" returns from the Unknown Regions and takes command of the Imperial Fleet to destroy the fragile New Republic.

By the era of the New Republic, he serves Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa. For Leia, he often acts as a translator and diplomat’s assistant, helping her in political negotiations. For Luke, he serves more as a companion and support droid, though his skills shine best in diplomacy rather than combat.
