Sonic and the Tales of Deception Audio Drama
Project Overview
Welcome to the Sonic and the Tales of Deception Audio Drama auditions! This is where you can audition for roles that connect to everyone's favorite speedy blue hedgehog. I had previously worked on an audio drama adaptation of Sonic and the Tales of Terror, so I thought it'd be appropriate to adapt the other book into audio format. For those unfamiliar, Sonic and the Tales of Deception is a book written by Jake Black. The book contains three stories garnered towards children around the ages of 8-11. These stories include:
- Not-So-Fantastic-Journey
- Fighting Shadow
- Doppelganger
Some of the cast has been determined, but, there are other characters that are in need of voices. Also, the characters who already have voices will need understudies just in case the original VA is unavailable. On top of voices, I am in need of artists to draw scenes for the three stories. While the original book does have illustrations, there aren't enough and I thought having full scenes would be more visually striking.
In order to audition for a character, I do need you to have a few things:
-A decent microphone. USB mics are fine, but no phone mics.
-Please record using the AAABBBCCC format, if you do not record this way, I will have to ask you to re-audition.
-Have little to no background noise in your auditions.
-Be committed if you do happen to receive the role.
-Have a Discord
As for the artists, there are quite a few things I require. Most of these are simple do's and don'ts when it comes to art, but some requirements I am very strict with. These requirements include:
-No base art, Sonic X recolors, tracing, etc. Please be original (referencing is fine).
-Have at least a year's worth of art experience.
-Do not straight up copy the illustrations from the book if I decide to choose you. You can reference, but no blatant copies.
-I would prefer it if you were a digital artist.
-Do not steal anyone else's work. I do not tolerate art thieves, and if I catch you stealing from other artists, you will be booted from the project.
Most importantly, whether you're a voice actor or an artist, have fun!!! These are fun little children's stories centered around the blue blur, let's have some fun with this! I wish all of you the best of luck and I hope we get to work together!!!

I'm sure we all know who Sonic the Hedgehog is; a cocky, but well-intended teen who tries to save the world from Eggman. For this role, I'm fine with anything you offer, though I personally prefer a take that's closer in line to Jason Griffith or Ryan Drummond. If you can do a mixture of both, that's great! But, don't be shy to try something new.
In these stories, Sonic tends to show some edge in certain parts, acting a bit angry. But aside from those smaller bits, he's the usual Sonic we all know and love. Except, in the second story, Sonic ends up being mind-controlled by Eggman, forcing him to join the dark side! The second line is where you will have to act all evil, but still have some of that Sonic flair. The third line has him proposing a race between him and another Sonic claiming to be from the future, which he 100% doesn't by.
(Thanks Knuckles for taking Eggman's attack) "Thanks for taking the hit for me. I mean, I probably would have stopped them at the last minute, but still…"
(Laughs and then acts evilly cocky) "Looking for this?"
(Slightly passive-aggressive) "All right, buster. If you’re really me, prove it. I’m the fastest being in the universe. You should be just as fast as me. Let’s go."
Sonic's number 1 buddy and sidekick. Despite how young he is, he is quite intelligent and a wizard when it comes to machines and technology. Brains may be his specialty, but he does contain some brawn, mostly thanks to hanging around Sonic and learning his moves. He's a quick little fox, due in part to his two tails, which he uses to fly.
Tails is more of a supporting character in all three stories. Nothing special happens to him in the story, unlike Sonic. I will be voicing Tails in the audio drama, but it does help to have an understudy if something were to happen to me to the point where I couldn't record. For Tails, I prefer the takes that Kate Higgins or Colleen O'Shaughnessey, but any take is fine with me, and if you can do something different, lay it on me!
"We have one shot, but it’s a long one. We have to get inside Knuckles and destroy the nanobots that have started to take over his body."
"I have an invention that will blast sound waves of the opposite frequency at Sonic. Using the principle of destructive interference, it should cancel out Eggman’s “Sonic whistle”. The problem is, it’s got a very limited range. It basically has to be within a couple of inches of Sonic. And you’re the only person I know who might be able to run fast enough to get close enough to him."
(Excitedly) I can’t get over the fact that I built…or am building… a time machine! How does it work? When do I build it?
Knuckles is a tough, yet humble echidna who stands as the guardian of Angel Island and the Master Emerald. He's a bit of a hot-head, but he truly means well, which usually makes him the butt of many jokes from Sonic.
Knuckles really doesn't have a lot of lines in the stories, except for maybe the second one. I am fine with any take of Knuckles, just be able to sound cool but also a bit hotheaded.
(Slightly angry) "Easy?! There were like a million robots. That wasn’t easy!"
"Listen, buster. Sonic is evil. You’re kind of like Evil Sonic. You understand what he’s thinking. If you don’t help us figure it out and stop him, Sonic and Eggman are going to take over the world. And do you really want Sonic to be the one who helps Eggman rule the planet?"
(Jokingly) "Whatever it is, it’ll probably break down on its first use."
Dr. Eggman is the main villain of the Sonic series. He's rude, pompous, arrogant, and narcissistic. But, he can be a bit of a goofball. He's the type of person who likes to talk all high and mighty.
In the audio drama, Eggman serves as the overarching threat over all three stories. He is a bit more threatening and calculating, especially in the second story when he's able to mind-control Sonic. For this role, I'm looking for more of a Mike Pollock type of voice, but Deem Bristow or your own take is fine as well!
"Finally! My ultimate plan has come to pass! These robot bee stings will inject Sonic with tiny nanobots that will take over his cellular structure and turn him into a robot—a robot that I can control!" (Laughs evilly)
(Laughs creepily) "I’ve completed the first phase of the plan: blasting sound waves that made Sonic unable to stay awake. And now I’ve developed the proper frequency that only Sonic can hear, which will allow me to take over his mind and place him under my control!"
(Happy and proud) "You are my greatest creation! A robot so life-like that even Sonic’s closest friends don’t realize what you really are. I’m a genius!"
This role is the most important role in the project. The Narrator will be the one who reads off what the characters are doing, what the setting is like, what is happening in the scene, etc. This role is a versatile one. I want to be surprised at what you got! I only require that you at least take this "semi-seriously". I say semi-seriously because while the stories were originally written for children, I don't want it to sound like it's pandering to them or it just sounds like you're reading to a bunch of babies or toddlers. But don't take this too seriously, this isn't an epic fan fiction meant to be read like a Shakespeare play. Just have fun with the role and make it your own. Please keep in mind that since this is a very important role, there are many lengthy scenes you must read, so please be committed to the part.
"Sonic stood in front of the Shrink Ray. He was angry: angry that Eggman had attacked; angry that Knuckles got hurt; angry that he was so hypnotized by the bees in the first place. But, even as angry as he was, he was excited to fight the nanobots inside Knuckles. This was an adventure and a rescue mission all in one. And one that required him to go fast, before it was too late. And Sonic loved going fast."
"Sonic didn’t like to sleep. At all. But tonight he was more tired than usual. He couldn’t explain it, but he simply could not stay awake. He dreamed of destroying Dr. Eggman’s robots and defeating the deranged scientist once and for all. It was a good dream. Miles away, though, the real Dr. Eggman was about to unleash a new, sinister plan. He had invented a long-range mind-control device and was going to direct it at Sonic. Standing at the device’s controls, Dr. Eggman turned some knobs and rotated some dials, finishing some final tests. It was ready. It looked like a small speaker and was directed out the window of Dr. Eggman’s lab, toward Sonic’s home."
"The two Sonic’s were off. Their course would take them over the nearby hills, to the beach, through the city, and back to the starting line in one giant circle. They were neck and neck as the race began. Future Sonic flipped a switch on his wristband and started going faster, and then faster–and faster still. Within seconds, Future Sonic was blazing ahead of Sonic in a blue-gray blur. Sonic skidded to a stop, shocked, and watched Future Sonic run out of sight."
Amy Rose is a spunky and friendly girl who happens to have a massive crush on Sonic. She may not seem like it, but if you tick her off, you'll more than likely meet the end of her Piko Piko Hammer. For her voice, I want a take that's more in line to Lisa Ortiz's portrayal of the character, but don't be shy to try your own spin!
(Giggles) "Oh, Sonic, you were amazing, as always."
(Concerned) "What are we going to do? There has to be some way we can help him. Some way we can get the old Sonic back!"
"Sonic, just because he’s faster than you doesn’t mean anything. He’s from the future. He’s got better shoes, better training, and more experience."
Dubbed the Ultimate Lifeform, Shadow is a no-nonsense, serious, and somewhat melancholic hedgehog that begrudgingly serves as an ally to Sonic and his friends. A once revered-fueled villain, he is now a reserved and angsty fellow who prefers to be alone. Shadow only makes an appearance in the second story, where he is recruited by Tails, Knuckles, and Amy to help them return Sonic back to normal after Eggman had brainwashed him. A take similar to David Humphery or Jason Griffith is my preferred version, but as I've stated before with a lot of these roles, any take is fine with me.
(Bluntly explaining) "You want to know what’s in his head? Whatever Eggman’s telling him. And based on the attack on the beachfront, it looks like he’s telling him to burn the world down."
(Defiantly aggressive after Tails says he may not be able to catch up to Sonic) "Not. Faster. Than. Me."
(Explaining to Evil Sonic cockily) Something like that. It’s a device that makes me even faster than you...not that I need it.
The only original character in the entire audio drama. Originally masquerading as Sonic's future self, Future Sonic is actually an advanced robot created by Eggman to steal a tank Tails had been constructing. For Future Sonic's voice, I imagine a gruff and older-sounding Sonic, considering he's supposed to pretend to be him from the future. Maybe even something similar to Kurt Russell, since his design seems to be based on Kurt Russell's character from "Escape From New York".
"Guys, guys, guys, I can’t tell you any of that. You know, space-time continuum stuff. I don’t want the universe to implode by screwing up the timeline!"
(Acts slightly nervous but composes himself) "C’mon, let’s not get crazy here, Sonic. I mean, I’m a lot older than you. I don’t know if–"
(Sinisterly) "Sorry to have to do this to you, Tails, but I can’t have you stopping our attack tomorrow. Actually, I’m not sorry."
I am looking for several artists who can draw scenes as a visual for the audio drama. I will have the scenes planned out once you are brought on board, but as I mentioned before, I do not want you to copy for Batum the original illustrations from the book.
