In Sailor Moon, Usagi meets Luna, a cat-like creature that is searching for the Moon Princess. Luna discovers that Usagi is destined to save Earth from the forces of evil and gives her a brooch to transform into Sailor Moon. She asks Usagi to form the Sailor Soldiers, find their princess and protect the "Legendary Silver Crystal". As Usagi matures, she becomes a powerful warrior and protects her adopted home planet, Earth, from villains who wish to harm it. Usagi is depicted as carefree and cheerful when at ease but promptly serious and strategic-minded when fighting.
As the protagonist, Usagi appears in every episode, film, television special, and original video animation (OVA) of the anime adaptations, Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon Crystal; as well as the live action adaptation, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. She also cameos in the sister series Codename: Sailor V. She has been the subject of parodies and has appeared in special events. Most Western audiences were introduced to Usagi appearing in the Sailor Moon anime, which is an adaptation of the manga series. Usagi's critical reception has been largely positive and she is recognized as one of the most important and popular female superheroes of all time.

Before becoming friends with Usagi and the other Sailor Senshi, Ami was a shy girl who did not make friends easily, and preferred to spend time alone studying and reading books instead of being with her classmates. In return, many of her classmates believed her to be snobby and arrogant because of her intelligence, even being superhuman, as she always finished at the top of national exams. However, once Ami and Usagi became friends, the opinions began to change.
Ami is depicted to be a sweet, kind, gentle, and loyal girl who is slightly insecure. In the beginning, she relies on the opinions of her mother, classmates, and teachers, but as the series progresses, she becomes stronger and more confident. She is the most sensible out of the Inner Senshi, and she dislikes fights; especially the fights between Usagi and Rei. Ami's parents are divorced, and she lives with her mother in a condominium.
Ami dreams of becoming a doctor like her mother, and her favorite subjects are math and science. She also has a secret love of romance novels and pop culture, but is embarrassed to say it.

Rei is a stoic and serious individual who does not get too involved with men. She is described as being a beautiful, smart and reserved woman. She lives with her grandfather at the Hikawa Shrine on Sendai Hill, which is where she works as a miko. Later on, it is revealed that her dream is to become the head priest of the shrine.

Makoto is a Japanese teenager who lives in Azabu-Juuban, Minato Ward, Tokyo, Japan. In Act 17, it is revealed that her parents died in an airline accident when she was younger and Makoto lived all by herself ever since. After she got a sense that there was a place she had to be, she transferred to Juuban Municipal Junior High School, the same school Usagi Tsukino and Ami Mizuno go to. When she transferred, a rumor went around saying that she was expelled from her old school. In Chapter 1 - The Melancholy of Mako-chan, the first story of the Exam Battle series that takes place in the Infinity arc, it is shown that Makoto is very scared of airplanes because of the accident. The story also revealed that Makoto likes cooking and bargain hunting. Also, Makoto is 15 years old in the Infinity arc. In the Dream arc, she and the other Sailor Senshi (excluding Rei, Chibiusa, Setsuna, and Hotaru) attend Juuban Municipal High School. In Act 42, it is shown that Makoto dreams of getting married, opening up a small flower shop and cake bakery, and growing up to be as pretty as Michiru and as strong as Haruka.

Chibiusa belonged to the future, 30th-century Crystal Tokyo, and travelled back in time to 20th-century Tokyo initially to save her mother and again later in the story for training as a Sailor Senshi. She was the daughter of Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion, the future forms of Usagi Tsukino and Mamoru Chiba respectively, and the granddaughter of Queen Serenity. She had a guardian device called Luna P, and a grey kitten named Diana, who was the daughter of the moon cats Luna and Artemis.
When she first arrived in the anime continuity she was around 6 years old, while in the manga continuity she was chronologically 901, but still mentally and physically 6 years old. The delay in her aging was due to the power of the Silver Crystal and the fact that her own powers as a Senshi had not been fully awakened.
In the anime, before she gained the ability to transform into Sailor Chibi Moon, Chibiusa also had the power to emit a column of extreme energy from the crescent moon symbol that could appear on her forehead. She tended to do this when she was alarmed or scared, and the energy column was visible from a distance, which meant that the Black Moon Clan used it as a way of tracking her.

At a young age he lost his parents in a car crash on his sixth birthday. This blocked his childhood memories of his current lifetime and opened up the memories of his previous life as Prince Endymion. In the beginning of the series, he dreams of Princess Serenity that haunts him, As Mamoru. he tries to solve the pieces together from his strange dreams, and as Tuxedo Mask, he tries to remember his past and identity, while searching for Princess Serenity. He seeks the Silver Crystalin the belief that this will fully restore his memories.
I will remember you, Sailor Moon.

Ikuko's role was almost identical in the anime and manga. She was a kind woman with a motherly nature, though she could be strict concerning Usagi's and Shingo's academic performance. One of her first actions in both versions of the series was to scold Usagi for her poor performance on a test at school and literally throw her out of the house.
In the Black Moon arc of the manga, Chibiusa lived with the Tsukinos and referred to Ikuko as "Ikuko-mama." Ikuko cared for Chibiusa like a daughter, and treated her as she did Usagi and Shingo. Likewise, in the Stars season of the anime, Chibi Chibi lived with the Tsukinos and Ikuko again treated her like a daughter.
In the SuperS season, Hawk's Eye targeted Ikuko because of his love of older women and the belief that Pegasus could be hiding in her beautiful dream. This was proven to be wrong, and Ikuko was rescued by Super Sailor Moon and Super Sailor Chibi Moon.

Shingo and Usagi have a typical sibling relationship, they often tease each other, Shingo calls her "Stupid Usagi" and teases her about her clumsiness and laziness. Although they bicker, both siblings care deeply for each other. In the Materials Collection, it is noted that he is a brat and that he is popular in his class.

Beryl was an Earth sorceress of a lower rank who fell in love with Prince Endymion but her love went unrequited. She became obsessively jealous upon finding out his love for Princess Serenity. Beryl was later corrupted by Queen Metaria, who had detected malice in her heart.
Her possession led her to revolt against the Moon Kingdom and disobey the orders of Prince Endymion. When the prince tried to persuade his people not to fight against the people of the moon, Beryl killed him with a sword. She, in turn, was then killed with the Holy Blade by Sailor Venus, but it was too late to win the war when Princess Serenity committed suicide after Endymion's death.
After the events in the Moon Kingdom everyone was reborn on Earth, Beryl included. Beryl, a normal woman then, found the ruins of the Dark Kingdom at D Point and reawakened Metalia, thus making Beryl remember her past and make her evil again. She corrupted the four Shitennou and got them to do her bidding. She was determined to find the Silver Crystal and control the world and make Endymion rule beside her. Later, Kunzite killed Mamoru (the reincarnation of Prince Endymion), kidnapped him and took him to Queen Beryl. She then re-awakened him and brainwashed him to make him find the Silver Crystal. When the Senshi found out that Mamoru was brainwashed, a battle began at Game Center Crown. Using her hair to bind Sailor Moon and choke her, she tried to get the secret of the Silver Crystal from her. Sailor Venus remembers what Beryl did in her past life and conjured the Holy Blade once more. Sailor Jupiter used the sword to cut Beryl's hair and free Sailor Moon. After this, Sailor Venus stabs Queen Beryl in the torso with the sword. Beryl reaches out to Endymion, remembering her unrequited love for him in the Silver Millenium, as she dissolves into dust.

Jadeite is the first of the Dark Kingdom's Shitennou to appear in the manga. He appears in Volume 1, Act 1, but is not named until Act 2, when he calls himself the commander of the Far East.
His first plot is to have a youma pose as Naru Osaka's mother at the Jewelry OSA-P store selling jewelry which drains its wearers of their energy. When this first plot fails, he moves on to his second plot, where he sets up a cram school attended by Ami Mizuno called Crystal Seminar, where students are drained of their energy.
After this, too, fails, his final plot, in Act 3, is to trap the senshi on a bus. He kidnaps students riding the 6:00 bus (#666, a reference to the devil) from Sendai Hill, which is near the Hikawa Shrine. He manages to hypnotize Rei into boarding the bus, and takes the bus to another dimension. Sailor Moon and Sailor Mercury confront him, Sailor Moon uses her Moon Frisbee to prevent him from moving. He can still, however, use powers stemming from his vision, and attacked both senshi. Sailor Mercury prompted Luna to throw the transformation pen towards Rei, where she transformed immediately and became Sailor Mars and attacks him with her anti-evil scrolls, in which Jadeite was killed.
His skeleton was preserved in a glass coffin and Nephrite vows to bring him back to life, which Jadeite temporarily does when Princess Serenity is found. Unfortunately, he and the other Shitennou were immediately turned into precious stones afterwards.
In the later side story Casablanca Memories, Zoisite also tried and failed to avenge Jadeite's death.
Later, when the Silver Crystal appeared, it was revealed that during the Silver Millennium, Jadeite and the other Shitennou originally were not evil - they served under Prince Endymion as his guardians and advisors. They were, however, tempted by the power of the Dark Kingdom (like most other humans), and fell to it. They eventually become good again, and their spirits advise Mamoru when he needs their help.

In the manga, she is kind, friendly, and is outgoing. Naru Osaka appears in Act 1 of the manga. She does not have as large a role in the manga as she does in the anime, and never develops relationships with either Nephrite or Umino. She is Usagi's best friend, and Usagi thinks very highly of her, telling her that she is a princess and that she is smart (she made an 85 on the quiz in Act 1). Her mother owns a jewelry store called OSA-P that is the scene of one of Jadeite's energy-stealing schemes in Act 1. Naru is very trendy and popular. She makes fewer and fewer appearances as the series progresses. Later, in Chibiusa's Picture Diary #4, Volume 17, we learn that Naru has a younger sister in elementary school named Naruru Osaka. Naruru is only Naru's sister in the manga.
Naru attended Juuban High School in the last arc, as she is shown in one panel to be eating lunch with Usagi.

Gurio Umino, usually called by his family name "Umino", is a socially-awkward friend of Usagi Tsukino and her best friend Naru Osaka. He is very intelligent , but at some point, he could be arrogant and a bit of a "Mr. Know It All".
He was usually the one who kept the others up-to-date on information on Sailor V, the strange crimes and rumors in Tokyo, and on students such as Ami Mizuno and Makoto Kino.
