Project Overview

Story Description
Red String Theory follows a nursing student who is working on a psychology project centered on the concept of love. During her research, she comes across the red string theory—the belief that an invisible string connects two people destined to meet, often considered soulmates. Fascinated, she chooses it as her topic, but instead of focusing only on romance, she begins exploring other possibilities: a childless couple whose string connects to a lonely orphan, or a young boy whose wish for a puppy links him to a puppy waiting for its owner.
While these cases form one layer of the story, the heart of the series lies in the protagonist herself. A devoted reader, she has long admired a particular character from a favorite novel. When this character suddenly dies in the book, she is devastated and abandons her reading altogether—until one day, the emperor is mysteriously transported into her world, turning her reality into a reverse isekai scenario.
Now, she must help him navigate the modern world while figuring out a way for him to return home. But as they grow closer, she slowly realizes that the red string she has been studying all along is not just a theory—it is tying her to him in ways she never expected.
Red String Theory is a heartfelt story about fate, connection, and discovering that love can take many forms, often in the most unexpected places.

When her professor assigns a research project on human psychology, she struggles to find a unique topic, as most ideas have already been taken. Eventually, she discovers the concept of the red string theory—a myth about invisible threads connecting destined people. Though she knows it isn’t real, her curiosity leads her to explore it further, expanding her research to include different forms of love beyond just romance.
Now in her second year, her life takes an unexpected turn when her favorite character from a novel suddenly dies, leaving her heartbroken enough to stop reading altogether. But just when she thinks she’s moved on, the impossible happens—the very same character is transported into her world.
With no one else to turn to, she takes it upon herself to help him navigate modern life while searching for a way to send him back home, unaware that her connection to him may be far deeper than she ever imagined.

Who are these people, you may ask? Anyone can be connected by this belief. As for me… I’m still waiting for my string to tighten.
But why does love have to stop there? Does the red string theory apply to that mother and child? Or even that man and his dog? Well, whatever… I guess it remains a theory, then.
He is feared as a tyrant by those who stand against him, yet revered by his people as a compassionate emperor. Beneath his unyielding authority lies a ruler who carries the weight of his empire with quiet devotion, ensuring that those under his crown are never left to suffer.
After his death, he is cast into the modern world, forced to live as an ordinary person. Yet even in this unfamiliar life, he cannot let go of the empire he once ruled. While struggling to understand a world filled with things utterly foreign to him, he continues to search for a way back to the throne he lost.

She is half Chinese and half Korean, and has been a devoted friend to Yeong-ro ever since they met as children. A literary student, she is often seen as the “mother” of the group—constantly looking after everyone, making sure they’re safe, healthy, and truly okay.

Because of his obsession with science, Aki has a habit of pointing out how illogical things are, which clashes heavily with her love for literature and fantasy. As someone who believes in imagination and storytelling, she often finds herself arguing with him, trying—and usually failing—to make him understand the beauty of things that don’t need to make sense. Their constant bickering has become a normal part of their dynamic.
She also loves sewing dresses and takes responsibility for caring for the plants in their room, especially since Addison keeps bringing more in. It’s something she does quietly, a reflection of her nurturing nature.
She moved to the city with Yeong-ro, leaving her home behind just to stay by her side. The two have been inseparable for years, attending the same schools from preschool all the way to college.
However, while she is strong for others, her own heart is less fortunate. When it comes to love, she struggles—often giving her all, only to end up heartbroken in the end.

She was once carefree—an optimist with a gentle heart, and a loving sister to Onyx. As the last of their family, the two ruled together, carrying the weight of their kingdom side by side, with her standing proudly as the Princess of Sapphirion. A hopeless romantic, she believed deeply in love, convinced that the world could become a better place if only people chose to care for one another.
But everything changed the day her brother died.
With his loss came the fall of her innocence. Forced to take his place as emperor, she set aside her softness and took on the burden of the throne alone. Now, she rules with determination and quiet strength, all while relentlessly searching for the truth behind his sudden death.

He is the downstairs neighbor, known for his deep fascination with biology and anything related to chemistry. Introverted but not shy, he tends to come off as awkward around others, often unsure how to navigate social situations. Despite this, he is quietly kind, thoughtful, and highly studious—though he only puts real effort into subjects that genuinely interest him.
Physically weak but surprisingly agile, he excels at dodgeball—specifically the dodging part. He enjoys spending time at the library, loves hamsters, and cares deeply for his friends. When stressed, he turns to baking as a way to cope, though he becomes oddly sensitive about any negative feedback on his treats. He dislikes fireworks and fish, and has a severe allergy to pineapple.
A year younger than Yeong-ro, he is one of her closest friends and helps co-write her research paper on the red string theory. He shares an apartment with a roommate who appears intimidating at first but is actually very sensitive—someone who might tear up over the smallest things. The two argue frequently, yet their bond remains strong, proving that despite their differences, they are each other’s closest companions.

He looks intimidating—cold, sharp, and undeniably scary at first glance—but beneath that exterior is someone deeply misunderstood. Despite his best efforts to appear friendly, people often misjudge him, filing complaints about how frightening he seems. It got to the point where the officers at the Central Civic Hall gave him a regular spot, recognizing that he means no harm and is genuinely trying his best.
Unfortunately, his naivety and gullibility tend to get him into trouble, landing him in “jail” at least once or twice a week. In reality, the police simply let him stay in the Civic Hall’s quarters whenever no one is available to pick him up, treating him more like a familiar guest than a criminal.
That’s where he meets Aki—a chaotic and unserious individual who often causes trouble through failed chemistry experiments. Seeing how well their personalities contrast, the mayor arranges for them to share an apartment. When he moves in, however, his appearance ends up scaring their upstairs neighbors, which unexpectedly opens the space for London to move in, thanks to his friendship with Chaser.
At first, he unintentionally intimidates even his own friends. But over time—especially after Aki impulsively dyes Chaser’s hair pink—things begin to change. The tension fades, laughter replaces fear, and little by little, people start to see him for who he truly is. His efforts to be kind no longer go unnoticed, and for the first time, he begins to feel understood.

She is bright, peppy, and endlessly cheerful—a true plant lover, proudly known as a “plantita” in her home country. As an agricultural major, she pours her passion into caring for plants, finding comfort and joy in watching things grow.
Unable to live freely in a place that doesn’t accept same-sex relationships, she made the difficult choice to leave her country behind. Now, she lives with her girlfriend, Sage, as they attend the same college—building a life together where she can finally be herself.

He is a college dropout who survives by taking whatever work he can find—babysitting, pet sitting, janitorial work, cashier shifts—anything that keeps him afloat. A natural hustler, he’s learned to adapt and endure, knowing stability is something he can’t rely on.
He carries a constant scowl, coming off as cold and distant, but in truth, he’s just worn down by a life that never seems to ease. Once a music major, he was forced to give up his dreams due to lack of money, leaving him cynical and pessimistic about the world. Still, music lingers quietly in him, a reminder of who he used to be.
Though he lives as an ordinary person, there’s something about him that feels out of place—an unspoken authority, a presence that surfaces when things fall apart. It’s as if he once belonged to something greater… and a part of him is still searching for what he lost.

She is in a relationship with her roommate, Addison, and only around her does her softer, more playful—and surprisingly goofy—side show. She enjoys sewing dresses in her free time and has a strong passion for acting, working hard toward her dream of becoming an actress.

He is one of the eight sons of the building’s owner and has been assigned to manage the very apartment complex where Yeong-ro lives. Once cold and distant, he rarely spoke to those he considered beneath his status. However, when his father tasked him with overseeing the old building—collecting rent and living among its tenants—he slowly began to realize that interacting with people wasn’t as unpleasant as he once believed.
Hiding his sexuality from his father, he gradually found comfort among the tenants of Kronk’s Apartment. Over time, he opened up, allowing himself to be more genuine and forming real friendships. Much of this change was thanks to Yeong-ro, who introduced him to a different way of living—one where he didn’t have to be confined by his father’s expectations. Instead of pursuing law, he chose to become a business major. Now, only two years older than Yeong-ro, he is close to graduating with his bachelor’s degree and plans to continue on to his master’s.
Despite this, he secretly dreams of becoming a professional gamer. Quietly, he prepares for this path, spending his monthly allowance on equipment—just in case his more “acceptable” career plan fails.
A hopeless romantic, he tends to fall too easily and often overlooks red flags, leading to repeated heartbreak. Each breakup leaves him emotionally wrecked, relying on Yeong-ro—and sometimes Mi-sun—for comfort, along with ice cream and whatever novel they can find online, even if it’s from a questionable, pirated site.

He is a professor at the university Yeong-ro attends, and the one who assigned the research project that led her to explore the red string theory. It was also through him that she entered the nursing program, as he personally recommended her for the school’s scholarship despite her financial struggles.
Having known her father for years, he initially saw helping her as a favor to an old friend. But over time, he came to recognize Yeong-ro’s own determination and potential. He believes she has what it takes to become an exceptional nurse, and quietly continues to guide her, not out of obligation, but because he genuinely believes in her future.
