Prof. Layton and the Curious Fandub, first casting call

Prof. Layton and the Curious Fandub, first casting call

Project Overview

Embark on a journey into the secretive town of St. Mystere with the puzzle-solving Professor Layton, and his apprentice Luke. Uncover the mysteries that make this small hamlet tick as the search for the Golden Apple, a mysterious inheritance, unravels.

Together, we will provide voice acting for the main storyline of the first professor Layton game, to be uploaded on YouTube in episodes that cover one chapter at a time. This project was made for myself and other newer voice actors to gain practical experience, so feel free to audition for one or multiple roles.

Some Requirements:

  • While I do not expect studio quality audio, please make sure there is no background noise present and the audio quality is decent.

  • If you want to do multiple takes, do 2-3 takes maximum and make sure they are in AABBCC format. I recommend to only submit multiple takes when they are distinct in some way (whether that is the voice used or delivery).

  • Include your Discord username when submitting your audition, future contact will be mainly through Discord.

Some further notes:

  • Do not be afraid to create eccentric voices, a number of characters in universe are somewhat animated and should have a sound that fits their eccentric personality.

  • The game is set in England, so a good English accent (of any variety) may fit well in the setting. Other accents are not excluded, but may only fit for certain characters.

  • Spoiler: Most characters in the village turn out to be very lifelike robots designed to challenge anyone seeking the Golden Apple. While they should NOT sound as robots, it is useful to take into account that challenging those searching for the Golden Apple is the motivation for many of these characters. Some notable exceptions to this rule are Professor Layton, Luke, Flora, Bruno, and Don Paolo.

  • Deadline Extension

First of all, thank you all for auditioning for this project, know that I have had a listen to all submissions that came in so far and that I am excited for the quality of your work.

That being said, since there are quite a few roles in this first casting call alone, there are some that do not have any submissions so far. Therefore, I have extended the deadlines by a few days and plan to do so again if needed. Rest assured that the plan remains to make casting decisions by the end of May.

Role assigned to: Mustard

Luke Triton, self-proclaimed apprentice of Professor Layton, is 12 years old during the events of the Curious village. While incredibly clever for his age, his loyalty and temper often make him take a defensive stance when anyone takes into question the skills of Professor Layton or himself. He also often becomes good friends with animals, owing in part to his ability to speak with them.

As the secondary main character, Luke sticks around throughout the story and has a lot of voice lines.

I am looking for a young boyish voice with a British accent that can encompass these qualities.

Of the several actors that have played Luke in different versions of the game, Lani Minella is closest to what I am looking for, though it is not required to do an impression of her performance.

Role assigned to: NukaEle

Wife of the late Baron Augustus Reinhold, Lady Dahlia Reinhold is generally bossy and self-centered. She does have a soft spot for her cat Claudia, whom she will often refer to by a number of pet names.

In contrast to the other robot-residents of town, she was initially made in the image of the Baron's former wife Violet who passed away. While initially made to have the same personality, she was later changed to be different due to an uncanny resemblance.

I am looking for a posh female voice that can take both a commanding tone to her staff, as well as be melodramatic when it comes to her cat.

Franco is a minor character who works the drawbridge that links St. Mystere to the outside world.

He comes across as gruff and blunt, unwilling to even allow Layton and Luke entrance to the village at first. He speaks in a snide manner but is ultimately helpful and dedicated enough to his job.

Stachenscarfen, or Stachen for short, is a recurring character in the Professor Layton series. This mysterious figure shows up near the start of every game to inform the Professor and Luke of hint coins and picarats, a job he takes very seriously. He basically provides some of the tutorial each game and usually has no other plot relevance.

Feel free to use any voice you find fitting, given his look and role in the game.

Nanny to the daughter of Baron Reinhold, Ingrid is a minor character in the game. She is an elderly, caring woman, who tends to be a bit forgetful when it comes to names.

While not a specific role in the game, this voice will be used for the recaps at the start of chapters, as well as chapter titles and the like. While no specific voice is required, I would prefer a female voice as this would strike a better balance with the male main characters. Most importantly, this voice should communicate the story clearly to the viewer. Generally, most lines are of a narrative nature. For this role, a British accent is not required.

This resident of St. Mystere is a minor character in the game. When the Professor and Luke first encounter him he seems to be mistrustful of them as newcomers to town. His lines often have abbreviations and the like. His language is not very formal and his voice should reflect it. Feel free to play with different British accents that fit the language use in the audition lines, these should give a good idea of the rest of his dialogue as well.

This servant of the Reinhold family is at first doubtful he is talking to the real Professor Layton. Later, he becomes plot relevant as he disappears after the murder of Simon and is later found being kidnapped. At a later point in the story, he simply shows up again without any knowledge of any of this. SPOILER: as he is a robot, he was simply taken in for repairs.

Based on his design and demeanor, I imagine he has a somewhat posh voice, though this is open to interpretation. He also has a very specific laugh, which may be exaggerated.

  • Ah, yes, yes. Ahoo hoo hoo! We've all been expecting you, Professor Layton.

  • For all I know, you could be just another hoo-hoo-hooligan in a top hat. A hoo hoo hoo!

  • Precisely, Professor "Layton." Now, if you don't mind, would you please solve this puzzle for me?

Matthew, the oldest robot in town, is the head butler at the Reinhold estate. He is kind and trusting to Professor Layton, but his timid nature often places him on the receiving end of Lady Dahlia's bossiness and rage. Most of his lines are either formal as per his role of butler, or somewhat distraught as he is being yelled at.

Gordon Reinhold is the brother of the late Baron Augustus Reinhold. He is among those who originally requested Professor Layton to come to St. Mystere. He is often stressed about something or other, examples being his being a suspect in the murder of Simon and his eternal bachelorhood.

Simon Reinhold, nephew to Baron Reinhold, is a snobbish and snide person. He is not evil in any way, just somewhat cynical. Simon is found murdered early in the game, becoming a major plot point despite having few lines.

Don Paolo

Role assigned to: M@

Don Paolo, first introduced as a mysterious figure, is the primary antagonist in the original trilogy of Professor Layton games. This fellow scientist is usually out to get whatever treasure or mystery Professor Layton is looking for, and calls himself Layton's nemesis. Don Paolo is rude, easily agitated, overly loud when he speaks, and antagonizes everyone he meets.

He is also a master of disguise, who, in every game, disguises himself as a major character, leading to a climactic reveal later in the game.

The below link leads to some voice samples from the game, though an impression is not needed to land the role. As Don Paolo is an extravagant character, I do expect his voice to be so as well. Despite being the antagonist he should also be a bit comedic in my opinion.

A renowned inspector from Scotland Yard. While he is a recurring character in Professor Layton games, the real Inspector Chelmey is never present in this game. Instead, the Chelmey we meet is in reality Don Paolo (the Antagonist) in disguise. His intentions are therefore to thwart Professor Layton and solve the mystery himself to gain the Reinhold fortune.

Despite not being the real Chelmey, his voice should still be that of the actual inspector as Don Paolo is a master of disguise.
