Portal 2 Blue Sky Fanfic Audiobook

Portal 2 Blue Sky Fanfic Audiobook

Project Overview

INTRODUCTION AND PROJECT OVERVIEW

Hey everyone!! I’m currently working on an audiobook for the ever-popular Portal 2 fanfiction: Blue Sky by wafflestories (click here to read it for yourself!!). I’m a huge fan of the portal games and have always wanted to make something to honor them. I've had this idea in mind for what feels like ages now, but I am finally somewhat able to act on it. There are 15 chapters in total, with each chapter totaling to around an hour podcast-wise. This is a HUGE endeavor and before I jump in headfirst, I want to do a proof of concept, and test drive it first. This means that, while I intend to go forward with the full 15 chapters, and I would encourage those who are able to make that commitment audition, as of now we will only be focusing on the first chapter.

I need time to break down how long all of this will take, and how well received it would be. As of right now, it is a sole venture besides whoever wishes to assist me from this casting call, so it will be a slow burn process. This means that while this project (in the context of the full 15 chapters) is a big commitment, it’s very flexible and has other moving parts beside just acting, so you will be given ample time to record if that is a concern of yours.

If this proof of concept (which is essentially just chapter 1) goes well and we decide to move forward doing the other chapters, this page will get updated to include the other myriad of roles- and there is a role for EVERYONE!! So please do check back either here or on my YouTube channel, and I will do my best to keep everyone updated on where the project is.

The final product will be uploaded over on my YouTube (which you can ~peruse~ here) and potentially on a sister-channel I help run, but likely only the first chapter (you can see this channel here).

DEADLINE

Auditions are currently scheduled to close on March 13th, but it is possible I may extend the deadline depending on the number of auditions that come in between then and now. If you would like to audition, but are afraid you may miss the deadline, please send me a private message and we can figure something out for you. I want everyone to have a chance at this!!

REQUIREMENTS

  • A clean recording on a strong microphone, i.e., very little background noise, and very clear lines. Similarly, if you decide to audition for a character that has a robotic effect applied to the voice, you are welcome to try a hand at processing the audio yourself if you would like, but please also provide the raw audio of your voice as well.

  • Discord (This is going to be the primary source of contact regarding specifics of the project)

  • I would prefer those auditioning to be around 16 years of age or older. If you are younger than this and would still like to audition, please message me first!!

  • Trying to match the actual character voice is very important in this project, so please do you best with this! If you have something else in mind, or would like to ad-lib, you are welcome to include this after the original dialogue. We love creativity!

  • (Optional) It would benefit greatly if you are familiar with both Portal 1, Portal 2 and the fanfic itself, both in your auditions and work in the future, but also in your understanding of the plot and character decisions.

  • Be engaged and motivated, and have fun!! I want this to be a fun passion project for all involved, just like myself!! We will have a discord server where we can talk and hang out and hopefully make some new friends along the way!!

If you have any questions/comments/concerns please don't hesitate to message me privately, or if it's something you feel other people may benefit from hearing, you can also comment on the project itself. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, happy auditioning!!

Chell

Chell is the silent protagonist of the original game series, acting as a conduit for the player. in this series, Chell is a silent, yet motivated and intentional woman, being very careful with her word choice when she does speak. She is observant and confident in herself, not letting others take advantage of her, and is loyal to those she cares about, risking her life without a second thought to help others. Her voice is smooth and caring, yet sharp tongued and stinging in the heat of the moment.

Note: This is a  semi-large role. While this is just a proof of concept to determine if the full capacity of the fanfic can be done, it is preferred that you can maintain the role throughout the 15 chapters to sustain consistency should we go forward with the full breadth of the project. If you have questions regarding this, please message me privately.

  • [Chell is lying down on a couch in her living room, after rescuing Wheatley from GLaDOS’s clutches. He is standing in front of her. She is feeling angry, betrayed and in severe pain as while they were escaping, she was shot and nearly killed by a turret all the while Wheatley nearly left her behind to die while he escaped on his own. Please only read for CHELL, other lines are provided to add context to the scene.]

CHELL: You nearly left me in there, didn’t you?

NARRATOR: Wheatley's grin vanished. He edged miserably from foot to foot, looking everywhere except her face.

WHEATLEY: Alright, granted, you do have a point there, under the circumstances I can understand why it might have, er, looked a tiny bit like I was about to up stick and leg it like some sort of spineless, ungrateful, wormy little excuse for an artificial life-form, but the thing is- it- it was a ruse, alright, that’s all, clever little ruse on my part, to- to lull Her into a false sense of security-

    (Chell clears her throat.)

NARRATOR: She leaned forwards and took the map from his unresisting hand and tore it into three rough strips.

CHELL: Heard of ‘three strikes and you’re out’?

WHEATLEY: Err, yeah, I have, actually. Not a fan of the phrase, to be honest, firstly, it sort of rubs it in that you lot like hitting balls about with sticks for fun, and secondly-

CHELL: This… is for trying to kill me.

NARRATOR: She screwed up one of the strips into a small ball, and tossed it at him.

CHELL: This is for nearly leaving me behind.

NARRATOR: This time the crumpled little ball bounced off his forehead. He flinched.

CHELL: You didn’t, [holding the final strip in her hand] fine. That matters. Thank you. But one more strike-

NARRATOR: Her fingers twitched. Wheatley, who'd been following every movement of this little demonstration as if hypnotized, let out a distressed whinny and made a grab for the strip, snatching it up out of her reach as if it was a small fluffy animal she'd been on the verge of crushing.

  • [After Chell rescued Wheatley from Aperture, and after she has had some time to heal, Aaron questions her on what happened that could have wounded her so bad. Despite being very close, Chell has never told Aaron about her past with Aperture and is terrified to finally do so, not just for fear of endangering the town but for having to relive those memories. Please only read for CHELL, other lines are provided to add context to the scene.]

NARRATOR: Wheatley would have guessed, from Chell's pale, set face, that she didn't, not in the slightest, want to talk about it. Still, she nodded, and took a deep breath.

    CHELL: There’s a- a place, about a day’s walk to the northeast. That’s where I… came from. Monday morning… I went back.

AARON: And nearly got yourself killed for your trouble. Chell, I’d be the last one in the world to make you dig up things you’d rather leave buried, but it seems to me, that if there’s something that dangerous that close to us, maybe it’d be a plan to go take a-

    CHELL: NO!

NARRATOR: If he'd actually had any skin, Wheatley would have jumped out of it. It wasn't just the sudden volume- although that was unexpected enough, coming from her direction- it was the way she suddenly ignited, going from still and tense to explosive, in the same way a nuclear reaction is explosive. It was a contained explosion, under control but only just, every part of her slight body braced to snapping point by some kind of fearful inner chain of combustion, her eyes blazing in her pale face.

    AARON: Hey, now-

CHELL: That place- it’s poison, Aaron. Leave it alone.

  • [Chell, being almost entirely silent, doesn’t speak often, but has many extra sounds such as coughing, grunting in pain, or heavy breathing. Please do a few of each style listed below, corresponding to the tone as described. Feel free to get creative and show off a bit, you can add more sounds or expand on any that you feel may be helpful to hear!]

-Heavy panicked breathing, as though you are running away from something.

-A small grunt, as though you are landing from a long fall.

-A pained yell, like you are being stabbed.

-A sharp wince in pain, like getting a small cut on your hand while cooking.

Originally built as a security measure for babies, turrets are sleek, bullet-filled machines later used in the Aperture testing as an added obstacle. They have high pitched, almost childlike, gentle voices, and despite their deadly nature, are oddly polite.

This video serves as a good example of how they should sound: https://youtu.be/5SQB9yv5n80

If you are able to provide the robotic voice effects, please provide both the raw audio and the processed version in your audition. This is not required however, so if you are unable to do so, do not let that stop you from auditioning.

  • [These are various lines that occur when interacting with the turrets. Examples of these can be seen in the video above.]

    I see you.

    Target acquired.

    Sentry mode activated.

    Hello-oo? Are you still there?

  • [As Chell is being grabbed by the Party Escort Bot, and being dragged back into the facility, Wheatley, originally sitting on top of a turret, grabs it and chucks it at the Party Escort Bot, hoping to deflect in enough to grab Chell and run away. Please only read for TURRET, other lines are provided to add context to the scene.]

NARRATOR: The turret trapped underneath Wheatley whined, its side-panels flexing helplessly.

TURRET: Excuse me, you’re squishing me.

PEB: Thank you for assuming the Party Escort Submission Position

NARRATOR: Wheatley- went a bit mad. He’d never thrown anything before in his life and his aim was slightly less accurate than anticipated. The squished turret squeaked, hurtling horizontally on its merry way.

    TURRET: Whoahwhoahwhoahwhoah!

  • [Here, Chell and Wheatley are trying to escape the Aperture facility, and while Chell finds a way out, Wheatley is confronted by the Oracle Turret. Please only read for TURRET, other lines are provided to add context to the scene.]

    TURRET: Hello. I’m different.

WHEATLEY: Course you are, love. Thing is though, we’re in a bit of a rush, so-

    TURRET: It’s not a sun.

    WHEATLEY: Right. Noted. Tragic really-

TURRET: The Norse god Odin sacrificed his right eye to gain knowledge of the past, present, and future.

    WHEATLEY: Is-is that right? That’s-that’s fascinating…

    TURRET: Don’t leave her.

The Party Escort Bot is a core/robot with long arms, used to grab test subjects and pull them away to a designated location, often for the "party," although what exactly this entails is unknown. The bot has a formal voice, with an almost German sounding accent. Very little is actually known about this character.

This video serves as a good example of how he should sound: https://youtu.be/AzlAc2WwEI8

If you are able to provide the robotic voice effects, please provide both the raw audio and the processed version in your audition. This is not required however, so if you are unable to do so, do not let that stop you from auditioning.

  • [Chell is laid flat on her back on the ground after being shot by the turrets during the escape from Aperture. The Party Escort Bot goes to grab her and pull her back in, similar to the end scene in Portal 1.]

PEB: Thank you for assuming the Party Escort Submission Position.

  • [Wheatley has thrown a turret at the Party Escort Bot, and has caused him to fall to the floor. This will likely end up being more of a mechanical sound, but I’m curious to see what it could sound like as a voice line instead. No pressure!]

Make a “very bad-tempered grinding noise.” Whatever that means to you.

The Narrator is simply that, a narrator. They can be of any gender and any accent, so long as they sound clear and can be easily understood. The narrator should have personality, but act neutral in the events taking place, while still being professional in their tone.

Note: This is a very large role. While this is just a proof of concept to determine if the full capacity of the fanfic can be done, it is preferred that you can maintain the role throughout the 15 chapters to sustain consistency should we go forward with the full breadth of the project. • [The start of chapter 1.]

NARRATOR: Somewhere deep within the vast vaults of Aperture Laboratories, two small robots charged down a long catwalk, the echoes of their footsteps clanking off the distant walls. One- short, stocky, with one bright blue eye at the center of its spherical body- squawked briefly at the other- taller, slimmer, its jointed torso housing a single orange eye- and took the lead, raising the strange gunlike piece of tech in its jointed hands and firing down the corridor at an angled panel at the far end. A blink-and-you'd-miss-it bolt of blue energy sizzled through the air ahead of the two robots, zipping down the catwalk and across a huge section of missing floor, a gaping unjumpable chasm where the metal looked as if it had simply been ripped away by a giant hand.

  • [Wheatley has been hit by a meteor while in space, and is not tumbling back towards Earth. He is scared, in pain and frustrated over his circumstances.]

NARRATOR: Something was happening- he couldn't see it but he could feel it. Something- no, somethings were shifting, servos whining in the hollow docking ports in his sides, things he hadn't been aware were there, but obviously had some function because he could feel them accessing his beleaguered mainframe as they came online. Even through all the noise and the pressure and the pain he felt a stab of frustration that here, yet again, was yet another bit of him that he hadn't even known he could use-

He twitched. Ah. Sparks. Nice to have them back.

  • [Wheatley has been hit by a meteor while in space, and is not tumbling back towards Earth. He is scared, in pain and frustrated over his circumstances.]

NARRATOR: Wheatley tried to express that no thanks were necessary (or, indeed, warranted.) He'd breached the mesosphere, the gas and debris he'd pulled with him burning even brighter in the oxygen-starved air, and by now the acceleration had forced his optical plates completely closed, meaning that he wasn't even going to be able to see what particular part of the Earth was going to turn him into metallic polenta.

The heat and vibration were becoming unbearable. Wheatley couldn't speak any more- couldn't actually think any more- caught in the grip of G-forces that would have immediately turned any human into jellied pudding, his outer casing fast approaching a temperature of two thousand degrees Kelvin. The only semi-coherent thought left in his shell was a scrambled desire to make his feelings known very clearly to whichever scientist had originally had the bright idea of making him able to feel pain.

And over it all, Her Voice. Perfectly clear, and very, very cold.

Wheatley is often the comic relief, and foils GLaDOS. He’s a frantic, fast-talking, British-accented, personality core who was used to bring down GLaDOS’s intelligence in the earlier games, and often referred to as an “Intelligence Dampening Sphere”. While he is often referred to as a 'moron' he's not necessarily stupid, and his "creative" ideas often serving as helpful and necessary to progress He cares deeply for others although he may struggle to show this at times.

  • [Upon Seeing Chell for the first time after her suspension after the events of Portal 1. Please do not read for announcer.]

WHEATLEY: Hello? Anyone in there? Hello? Are you gonna open the door at any time..AHH!!- Oh God. You look te—umm…good. Looking good, actually. Are you ok? Are you-Don’t answer that. I’m absolutely sure you’re fine. There’s plenty of time for you to recover. just take it slow.

ANNOUNCER: Please prepare for emergency evacuation.

WHEATLEY: Stay calm! St-stay calm! ‘Prepare’- that’s all their saying. ‘Prepare.’ It’s all fine. Alright?

  • [After being hit by a meteor in space, Kevin (Also known as the Space Core), was his only companion and has just been blown to bits by the impact]

WHEATLEY: Uck- hch- pfheh! Oh, God, I'm full of bits of him! Bits of Kevin! Oh, that's just sick- err, and a but disrespectful, too I suppose. You're not really supposed to inhale the dead. Looked on as a bit of a faux pas in most circles

    Wheatley sneezes.

WHEATLEY: Sorry, Kevin. Couldn't help it. Still, at least it's the way you would have wanted to go, right? Atomized by a meteor, in space. Almost poetic really...

  • [After falling back down to Earth, and being insulted by GLaDOS]

WHEATLEY: Oh, yeah? Well, why don't you come down here and say that, Miss Bossyboots-In-Charge-Of-Everything-Knickers? I didn't hear you doing much mouthing off about- about temporary solutions when I was up there and you were chasing about down here in a potatohhhhh god oh god why did I say that why did I say that why did I say that why did I say that-

GLaDOS is an AI, often the head of Aperture. She is malicious, sinister, witty, passive aggressive, yet still polite and very intentional with her words. Her voice is robotic yet still smooth, is slower-speaking and deliberate. She is a foil of Wheatley.

  • [In Portal 2, when GLaDOS is awakened and see Chell.]

GLADOS: Oh… It’s you. It’s been a long time. How have you been? I’ve been really busy being dead. You know, after you MURDERED ME. Okay. Look. We both said a lot of things that you’re going to regret. But I think we can put our differences behind us. For science. You monster.

  • [GLaDOS is in radio contact with Wheatley after he is hit my a meteor, and is now plummeting back towards Earth.]

Oh, I'm fine. Things have really improved since I regained control of the facility. You know, after you took it away from me that time? Stupidity-based reactor core meltdowns are down by one hundred percent, and morale is up too, so that's nice. How are things with you? [GLADOS interrupts WHEATLEY before he can speak, ignoring him entirely.] Anyway, I understand that you're choosing to die horribly on impact with the Earth's surface because you feel bad about what you did to me, and I just wanted you to know that I appreciate the gesture.

  • [Wheatley has fallen back to Earth and survived, but is now in the literal grasp of GLaDOS again, as she punishes him for his treatment of her in Portal 2. Here she is sadistic. Please do not speak for Wheatley.] Note: "Metal ball" is an insult in reference to Wheatley.

WHEATLEY: What-No! Nonononono! No-ah-no, please! Nonono, please, please, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!

GLADOS: Oh, I believe you. I just don't care. This isn't about revenge, metal ball. We both know you are a pointless, insignificant little moron who has never done anything right. Luckily for both of us, I can work with that. You see, listening to you just now when you thought you were going to die in a molten, agonizing fireball, I realized that you have one invaluable attribute. You can express pain.

I like that in a person.

  • [Chell, in Portal 2, awaken to see a dilapidated Aperture Laboratories, and this message is played at the start of her testing.]

ANNOUNCER: Hello, and again, welcome to the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. We are currently experiencing technical difficulties due to circumstances of potentially apocalyptic significance beyond our control. However, thanks to Emergency Testing Protocols, testing can continue. These pre-recorded messages will provide instructional and motivational support, so that science can still be done, even in the event of environmental, social, economic, or structural collapse. The portal will open and emergency testing will begin in three. Two. One.

  • [These are two separate announcements that occur at different moments, but still take place while Chell is testing.]

ANNOUNCER: If you feel liquid running down your neck, relax, lie on your back, and apply immediate pressure to your temples. You are simply experiencing a rare reaction in which the Material Emancipation Grill may have emancipated the ear tubes inside your head.

ANNOUCNER: This next test applies the principles of momentum to movement through portals. If the laws of physics no longer apply in the future, God help you.

This a more free-reign position, in that you can choose what aspects of the project you would like to help me with, whether it be cleaning audio, helping build the scenes through sound design, finding/compiling sound effects, etc. Please just express what aspect you are interested in, if any in particular, and some examples that you have done in the past, as well how involved you can/want to be.

I would love to have some background visuals to accompany the audiobook, it can be literal depictions of the scenes, or something more abstract, in any style. I'm open to ideas, although the scenic style in the concept art of Portal 2 has a special place in my heart. I'd love to see what you could do!!

Note: While this is just a proof of concept to determine if the full capacity of the fanfic can be done, it is preferred that you can maintain the role throughout the 15 chapters to sustain consistency should we go forward with the full breadth of the project. Each chapter would ideally have background changes moving with the scenes, although most images will likely be reused, i.e. one image to represent space, one for Aperture labs (maybe one for the tunnels, another for GLaDOS's chamber. etc). The technicalities of this are open to be discussed. If you have questions regarding this, please message me privately.
