Penelope is the wife of Odysseus and queen of Ithaca. She’s extremely intelligent and devoted to her husband, completely sure that he’ll return to her if she buys him enough time to do so. She represents a very graceful strength, using trickery to keep the suitors away.

Vocally I’m looking for a somewhat mature feminine voice, very steady and self assured but with a nurturing tone to it.

  • [Firm, commanding] “Listen closely guests, you’ve chased relentlessly after me for years and I’ve finally chosen to give you a chance. My husband was a brilliant protector of our kingdom and family, who I spend my life with should be the same. I propose a challenge of sorts to prove yourself worthy. Succeed and you will have won my hand and my husband’s throne.”

  • [Caring, loving, towards Telemachus] “While I appreciate your frustration on my behalf, my feelings about your father’s return aren’t going to change. My only regret is the burden these unsavory guests have put on you lately.”

Circe is a sorcery goddess living on an island with her nymphs. She often views men as threats to the home she’s built for herself and her nymphs, using her magic to transform them as seen in the Odyssey. She’s very defensive and calculating but can be a very gracious host to her loved ones or those who challenge her authority. She’s an extremely powerful figure, being a master of magic and herbs.

Vocally, Circe should have a middle range feminine voice, something very seductive and alluring while also being quite self assured and comfortable.

  • [Seductive] “Why don’t you come inside, get off your aching feet. We’ve prepared a feast just for wayward souls such as yourself”

  • [Calculating, firm] “Why should I believe you’re just a humble traveler? You’re all the same at the end of the day. Though I’ll give you a chance now. If you’re truly earnest in your motivations, prove it.”

Scylla was once a beautiful sea nymph, since turned to a horrible monster due to jealousy. She dwells in a cave, preying on any travelers who dare enter. Though she tends to act more in sorrow and survival instinct than malice, she’s feared by gods and men alike.

Vocally, Scylla should have a lower range feminine voice that can healthily go up into a more shrill wail or sob while also being able to do a deep gravely growl.

NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TECHNIQUES THAT YOU CANNOT CONFIDENTLY AND HEALTHILY ACHIEVE AT YOUR CURRENT SKILL LEVEL. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT CHARACTER VOCALLY AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER CHARACTERS TO TRY THAT DON’T REQUIRE MORE ADVANCED VOCAL TECHNIQUE.

Telemachus is the son of Odysseus and Penelope in the Odyssey. As a younger man at the start of the story, he’s quite melancholic and even aggressive towards the idea of his father, resenting him for vanishing and making his mother so sad every day. Though throughout the story we come to learn that he’s very protective and open to growth and change. He works under the tutelage of Athena and grows more confident and strong both physically and emotionally, ending up helping his father defeat the suitors.

Vocally I’m looking for a young teen/adult masculine voice, someone who is able to show that range between optimism and confidence and resentment and melancholy.

Voice description:
  • male teen

  • [Bitter, melancholic] “I don’t understand why you continue waiting for him. I can’t help but wish father had washed up dead on our shores so you wouldn’t be destined to spend each day crying over his absence”

  • [Soft, serious, hopeful] “If what I’ve heard about you is correct, then you’ll have to come up with some brilliant plan. Because those suitors are not going to let up on mother unless someone shows them who’s boss”

Psyche

Deferred: Agreed Amount

Psyche is a beautiful young mortal princess, drawing in many suitors who even went so far as to say she was more beautiful than Aphrodite. This of course brought extreme jealousy from the goddess who sent Eros to make her only fall in love with ugly and horrible men. Eros however fell in love with her himself, coming to visit her in secret, never revealing his identity. Psyche is an extremely curious girl though so she one night removed his mask, revealing the God she had been spending her time with. Eros leaves, condemning her for her distrust, causing Psyche to spiral into depression, searching for her love who secretly aided her along the way.

I’m looking for a young adult feminine voice, something with a very clear youthful voice. Vocally she’s very curious and playful with an energetic disposition.

Voice description:
  • female adult

  • [Playful] “Please gentlemen, I appreciate the sentiment but I’m afraid my heart belongs to a mysterious gentleman I’ve yet to truly know. Perhaps if you all had been a bit less upfront I might have had more interest”

Achilles

Deferred: Agreed Amount

Achilles is the heroic figure of the iliad who turned the tide in the battle of Troy. He was trained to be a warrior alongside his friend and future lover Patroclus as a child. Though, when the war began, his mother heard of a prophecy that he would die if he went. This led her to hide her son amongst a court of women so he would be safe from the war. The greeks however knew they would not win without him and thus went searching for him, being found by Odysseus. He joined the war for a long time before eventually deciding to step back. To avoid going back out, he dressed Patroclus as himself, leading to his lover’s death at the hands of Hector, causing Achilles to rejoin the war to personally kill Hector. Achilles was eventually slain by Paris who shot him in his only weak point.

For Achilles I’m looking for a mid/higher range masculine/androgynous voice. Achilles was able to trick all but the smartest of kings into thinking he was a woman so being able to put on a more feminine voice is a plus. Should be quite confident and outspoken.

Voice description:
  • male adult
  • [Encouraging, playful] “Keep up Patroclus. I wish for us to be able to fight side by side one day but that requires us to be on the same level. Now push harder.”

  • [Soft, loving] “After the war is over, you and I will venture off to create a home where we don’t need to fight to keep our heads above water. So we owe it to each other to survive the next battle until it comes to an end”

  • [Angry, grief] “I stepped away and my choice allowed my dearest companion to be struck down. Enough of this nonsense. Hector is mine. And I will not stop until he's six feet underground"

Voice description:

  • [Playful, response to Achilles’ first audition line] “Tsk Tsk my friend, you can be quite pushy you know. Gods forbid a man simply wants to stop and admire a great warrior as he trains”

  • [Soft] “I understand the plan. It’s a simple thing really. And it’ll be nice feeling the glory you must feel in this armor. And after this battle, you and I will share a meal together like we always do.”

Arachne is an expert weaver so skilled she saw it fit to challenge Athena to a competition. When she proved herself to in fact be the better weaver, creating a tapestry of Athena’s failures, Athena got angry and destroyed the project. Arachne out of shame then hung herself, leading Athena to take pity and transform her into a spider. Arachne as a character is extremely prideful to an almost dangerous degree. She knows she’s the best and she wants others to know she’s the best.

Vocally, Arachne has a mid/low range feminine voice, being extremely confident and clear in her tone.

Voice description:
  • female adult
  • [Boasting, confident] “Please, don’t understate my skill. Why, my craft rivals that of Athena herself. And if she doubts that, she can come here and challenge me herself”

She’s a very self aware character, as the daughter of zeus she acknowledges that her life is governed by the gods but she’s also very remorseful about the war, still feeling a brotherhood with the Greek soldiers despite currently living in Troy.

Vocally, Helen sounds very bright and feminine. A combo of youthful feminine energy and more soft, thoughtful energy.

Voice description:

  • [Playful, flirty] “Now don’t embarrass yourself. I am a lady first and foremost and a lady deserves to be romanced with more than a pack of dogs begging at her feet for attention”

  • [Sad, conflicted] “If you knew that taking me away would cause this war. Would you have still sentenced the men I once belonged to as their family to die in this selfish war?”

  • [Calm, self aware] “I am a daughter by the gods. My life is defined by their whims and if this is what they have chosen for me then I must live with that. I only regret that it’s led to so much death.”
