"Onism" - Student Thesis Film about a fish with legs!
Project Overview
INTRO:
Hello all! I am a Sheridan Animation student creating a 3 minute animated thesis film about a middle-aged woman who has worked in a goldfish store for most of her life encountering a strange fish with legs. It is a whimsical, fun and silly film that uses mixed media techniques such as 2D rigging, 2D hand drawn animation, and real-life pictures. I am looking for voice actors and a composer that can fit my vision of what the final film may look like. The characters do not have any dialogue, but will have many ways of expressing their emotions through things such as gasps, screams, and sighs. For further details, please check out the characters and their descriptions in the 'Roles' section!
If you feel like you connect with my thesis project, please come join as a potential voice actor or composer :)
DEADLINES:
The audition deadline will be November 25th, 2024 at 11:30pm [UTC -5]. I will notify selected candidates shortly after the deadline, but there is no set date at the moment.
Lines must be recorded and sent in by the latest December 20th, as animation will require the final take to get the accurate timing.
WHAT I ASK OF YOU:
As a student film, the voice acting roles are unpaid.
Please submit clean recordings with as little background noise as possible, preferably with a microphone.
I mainly communicate through Discord, so applicants should have it installed or be willing to install the app. However, I am open to discussing another form of communication if this format does not work for you.
Please follow the deadlines. My schedule is quite tight, so if deadlines are missed the timings will get messed up very easily.

Papaya is a middle-aged (50-60) woman who has worked in a goldfish store for most of her life. It was mainly a job she stumbled upon at a young age to make ends meet, rather than something she was passionate about. The goldfish store is located in Hong Kong, so it is a bonus if the voice actor knows Cantonese but it is not a must! The film is basically her journey of discovering that there is still time to change the direction of her life if she wants to. She does not have any voice lines with words, but her role is filled with gasps, screaming, and sighs.
Voice tips: Raspy, a bit deep, tired, bonus if the voice actor knows Cantonese but it is not a must.

Kernel the Boxfish is the fish with legs that Papaya encounters, who kind of acts as a squeaking guide as she travels through the weird backrooms world. I was originally planning on mainly using squeaky toys as Kernel's voice lines, but if you think you can do a good squeaking fish impression by all means I'd love to hear your audition!

(Please listen to the animatic to get the idea of the soundtrack I would like to go for before continuing!)
I'm looking for someone to compose a piece of music that fits the story of my 3-minute film (+ a bit more time for credits). I would like no vocals in the music, unless it is being treated as an additional sound effect. The very beginning of the film music is similar to the end, very sparkly but gentle and slower. Then, the next part of the film during the store sequence is very repetitive and calm--the music genre I have in the animatic is similar to a "vaporwave" style, but you can play around with it as long as it fits with the second half of the film. As she runs, the music will ramp up in tension and transition to something a lot more upbeat and bubbly. The style I'm looking for is called "Kawaii Future Bass", where it has hints of sparkles and has a very hopeful tone. Although I have a preference for this style, I am open to other options as long as it has the same magical and sparkly feeling. (I have listed an alternative idea as the last example on the list.)
Here are some examples that fit this style:
- Snail's House - Imaginary Express (Official MV)
- Snail's House - Pixel Galaxy (Official MV)
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbdArlIBPHk (possible alternative)
As I am only able to give the exact timing after I am done rough animation (including music for credits), you can use the animatic as a rough estimate on how long the soundtrack will be, but I will ask you to adjust to the final timing when rough animation is done.
The deadline for the final music track will be around mid-late February (The date is TBD but I will try to figure it out as soon as possible), as I would like to allow for time to edit and composite everything together.
As this is a student film, I am quite tight on budget but am willing to provide however much I can as this is a very important component of the film. If you have certain rates I am happy to discuss this with you prior.
Please include links to your work, and though this is not required, preferably with pieces that fit the style of music that I am seeking for. However, having the ability to and being willing to recreate the style is very important.
