Next Smash R Casting Call #1

Project Overview

This is a Super Smash Bros. machinima series based in a fictional online game setting called 'Next Smash', made with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

The story follows Atlas, a solitary Samus player, on his journey to become the top ranked player in the game. In order to do that, he must overcome the Seven Deadly Smashers, considered to be the best of the best. But perhaps there might be more to the game, an underlying mystery that threatens to surface... The series will mark both the growth of Atlas's skills as a player as well as a person.

This casting call is currently for characters that appear within the first two episodes including supporting cast, antagonists and as well as some extras. The series is projected to run at least 10 episodes or more as of this casting call.

The first two episodes are aimed to be finished before the end of April 2018. VAs are typically given a month to complete lines, unless more time is needed in cases of personal life complications. Scripts are sent out on a per-episode basis, so there will never be multiple scripts out at once.

Additional Notes:
- Some roles' genders may
not match the pictured character's gender since the characters are
players in an online game using avatars.
- Some roles' genders are not set in stone and can be adjusted to suit the VA chosen. Those roles are indicated in their individual descriptions.

Role assigned to: Xuan Vinh

CulpeoF0X is a close friend to Atlas, one of his only friends at the start of the series. Culpeo is a very understanding and passionate person, always trying to bring out the best in others. At the same time, he can be a little nosy, often nudging the introverted Atlas to talk to people besides him. Once Atlas begins to open up to others more, Culpeo stands behind him every step of the way to support his friend.

There's nothing in particular required for the voice for this role, a variety of interpretations are welcome.

  • [Concern] Wanting to win is fine, but
it's not healthy when it's all you think about. When was the last
time you actually spoke to somebody?

  • [Surprise, enthusiasm] Wait, you actually talked to
someone after our sets yesterday? That's great! I knew you could do it!

  • Whoa okay, truce!
We're all civilized people here, so let's act like it and stop
    arguing, alright?

Empressive

Role assigned to: deleted38612

Empressive is generally upbeat and enjoys taking it easy while playing the game. But she also takes a special joy in using her sharp tongue and wit to get under people's skin. Her two-sided nature hasn't done well for her popularity as most players tend to avoid her entirely. She and Atlas tend to butt heads often but strangely enough, they also can work together surprisingly well if they have to.

Being able to smoothly transition back and forth between being pleasant and snarky is key to this role. No particular pitch or tone is really required, however.

  • [small laugh] I was
just messing with him. Loner types are so easy to trigger, I
    couldn't help myself.

  • Everyone else avoids me like the plague, but honestly, it's their loss. They can't handle me.

  • [Irritated] Yeah, you better keep walking! Why don't you walk out of your mom's basement while you're at it?

Role assigned to: nick s

This character's gender can be changed to suit the voice actor/actress selected without impact on the story. The role by default is male with a female avatar, so that is how the description below will address the character.

BladedDragon7 is an incredibly aggressive player and overall just unpleasant. As the lowest ranked member of the Seven Deadly Smashers, he defends his position fiercely from anyone that might threaten to take it. Generally disliked by the majority of the player-base, most that watch his matches do so hoping he loses. When Atlas inevitably comes to challenge him, Dragon's hostile nature begins to ramp up even more.

Dragon is a very emotional character, so being able to capture his anger and aggressive nature while also balancing calmer, condescending moments is key.

  • [condescending] You're trash, plain and simple. You couldn't even button-mash your way out of a wet paper bag if your life depended on it!

  • [aggressive] This is my position and nobody is going to take it from me! Nobody, you hear me?!

Role assigned to: flipninten

ChoiceBANNED is a highly ranked player, #12 in fact, and quick to bring it up in a conversation even remotely related to rank or competitive play. To say he's cocky is an understatement, he will gladly sing his own praise from the rooftops whenever someone questions his integrity. That said, Choice knows when he's been bested even if he doesn't like to admit it. Despite all his showmanship and arrogance, those that are friends with him see that he is a good person despite his shortcomings.

No particular pitch or tone of voice is sought after, as long as Choice's cocky, punk-ish nature is conveyed.

  • [confident] I'm
just establishing dominance over here, Doc. This boy's gotta know when
    he's beat!

  • [smugly] Well, well, well, looks like we'll be facing off. You're about to get a good look at just how much better I am than you.

  • [begrudgingly] I admit, you've got some skills. You didn't do so bad... But don't get the wrong idea, I'm still way better than you!

Role assigned to: zephyracva

(Name is pronounced Doctor-Professor-Mister)
Doc is the polar opposite of Choice's hot-headed, cocky attitude being a soft-spoken and skittish person. Despite his quiet nature, he's a very supportive person, always willing to lend an ear to anyone that needs it. He also gives out pointers to newer players, although said advice is mainly aimed at the game modes that he excels in. He prefers avoiding competitive things like the plague and only plays against computer enemies, steering clear of anything involving fighting other players.

His voice should convey his general lack of confidence outside of dungeons or listening to someone's troubles. In those cases he is more rational and level-headed.

  • [embarrassed] Choice,
please stop yelling at other people from across the room, it's embarrassing!

  • Oh no, I don't actually fight other players. Way too much pressure... I mainly stick to dungeons and CPU opponents, it's far less stressful.

  • [calming, reassuring] It's alright, just take a deep breath. Good? Okay, now tell me everything that happened, I'm all ears.

MartialLaw

Role assigned to: terrayoh

MartialLaw is one half of the reigning Doubles champions. He is a 'no non-sense' type of person and takes the competitive side of the game a little too seriously. Generally cold and dismissive of others, the only person he appears to get along with is his doubles' partner HeroWingz. Law seems to liven up when a particularly intense fight is happening, whether he's participating or merely spectating.

His voice should be on the deeper, lower end of the vocal scale ideally. 'Calm intimidation' would be a good way to describe the sought after voice.

  • [confident]
Like sheep before the wolves. Strategy R should be enough for this.

  • This fight is a
disappointment. I was expecting more out of it.

  • [dismissive] Just
because they are ranked higher than us individually doesn't mean they
    are worth keeping tabs on.

Role assigned to: RedWay6697

This character's gender can be changed to suit the voice actor/actress selected without impact on the story. The role by default is male, so that is how the description below will address the character.

HeroWingz is the doubles partner of MartialLaw, making up the second half of the team. The strategist of the duo, he seems to have a plan for every situation. He enjoys studying and collecting data on other players, all of which he uses to formulate new strategies to use in fights. Some say he enjoys doing so even more than actually fighting.

Hero's voice range should be somewhere in the medium to higher pitch, to contrast Law's deeper tones. And opposite of Law's calm nature, Hero is much more expressive and excitable, especially when it comes to talking strategy.

  • Of course I keep track of the rankings,
we're in the top 30 too, after all. #12 and #23 are spectating just
    like us.

  • It's better to be safe than
sorry. Besides it's more interesting to think about than the fight
    going on right now.

  • [excited] That was a good battle! I should be able to formulate some new strategies with this data.

The unnamed commentator of Next Smash's Stadium primary focus is announcing for events in the Stadium. Usually such events are exhibitions matches or tournaments. Nobody really knows if they are an actual player in the game or some kind of NPC.

A voice that is built to bring excitement and hype to commentating fights is the best way to describe the voice sought for this role.

  • Ladies
and Gentleman, welcome one and all to today's Stadium Exhibition
Event! We've got an exciting line-up for you all, but before we get
to it, I believe some shout-outs are in order!

  • Now
then, it's time for our first bout in the line-up! This fight is
going to be a team match between the current Doubles champions and
a pair of up-and-coming challengers! Let's get this show on the road!

  • Do
our challengers have what it takes to overthrow the reigning
champions? Or will they crumble under the pressure?! Ladies and
Gentlemen, it's time to find the answers because this battle is about
    to begin!

This character currently only has a speaking role in episode 2 planned.

EDGEMAVERIK is BladedDragon's opponent for an exhibition match. As a throwaway character, his personality is limited to the stereotypical edgy teenager.

No real voice direction here besides unleashing the edgiest performance you can muster.

  • Ugh, whatever, you'll never defeat me. I'll use my ultimate attack and kill you before you can even blink!

  • This is my story and you're not part of it!

  • *Say something you think would fit*
