Project Overview

(Project art by BellaNoche_oxo on Twitter.)

WHAT'S THIS?

One thing about my characters is when I love them, I really love 'em, and on top of getting a million commissions for them I also want them to be voiced. You know how in some video games there'll be extra voicelines tucked away somewhere that are literally just there to get to know the character better? For fun? I'm looking to do that with my own characters. I have multiple characters that I really love, but testing the waters on CCC again with just one for now.

Fan project-adjacent - the character that I'm casting for is a One Piece OC, but lines will not necessarily all be centered on the animanga. But it'd feel wrong to mark this as original, haha. Knowledge of the series helps but is not needed, I'm always willing to provide proper context so that you can do your best.

Audio will be hosted on a public page, specifically on the website Toyhouse (with proper credits/linkbacks) but other than that, it's not really intended for a wider audience. See role for a link to the page in question.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW?

  • MUST BE 18+. This is not an NSFW project but I would like to work with other adults. The source material is exaggerated and goofy, and there's quite a bit of crude humor.

  • DEADLINE: TBD. It will be open indefinitely until I find a voice for my character; deadline is for listing purposes. This is not a big project that needs to be done in a certain amount of time or has a concrete deadline in mind. More details below.

  • PAYMENT: This is my first time hiring a VA. I honestly am not sure there's enough meat here for there to be an expected "numbers of hours worked" like a bigger, more formal project, and think it'd be more appropriate to do "dollars per line/minute"? I think the listed pay is a good ballpark range? However! I'm an artist too and want to make sure you, a fellow artist, are paid appropriately for your work! Let's discuss.

  • COMMUNICATION: Via Discord. Independent sessions, no live direction. I'll make a small, barebones server for organization purposes (which will also be used if I end up hiring multiple VAs).

  • AUDIO: Since this is paid, audio quality needs to be good. You do NOT need a professional setup, however.

  • CALLBACKS: May be requested if I liked your audition but want to hear another line or do a new take. May be requested if I think you'd fit another character of mine and want an audition for that instead.

  • Long-term project that's low commitment. How does this work? I just need you to be open to voicing this character and recording more lines again in the future! No specific dates or deadlines, and I don't expect you to drop everything to return. Kind of like I'm a repeat commissioner and you take me on whenever you have a bit of time?

  • I prefer auditions to have 2-3 takes per line (AABBCC), but only doing one per line will NOT disqualify your audition. You're more than free to embellish the line with whatever you think would elevate your take and make it sound more natural.

  • Questions, comments, and concerns can be sent to me on Discord @chromaticore.

Have fun with the audition and give it your all. Thank you so much for reading all of this!

Latest Updates

  • Thank you for the interest! + some extra stuff

Almost 40 submissions is crazy for what is honestly just a hobby project. Like, it is going on a public page, but it's mostly just gonna be shown around to some friends. Thank you for auditioning!

I wanted to let everyone know I updated the hourly pay range to $15-25 because I realized the previous one was kind of too low. Please note that this is just a ballpark range and I'll be discussing rates with whoever I cast so we can settle on appropriate pay.

I'd also like to emphasize that even though it's listed as hourly, I would prefer treating this almost on a commission basis and paying a flat rate per line/minute? whenever I have new ones for you to record. This is sort of a weird project where it's long-term but it's, like, hardly anything formal. There's just not enough substance for there to be sessions by the hour. Once again though, this is something to be discussed with the actor once they're cast.

And then here's a reminder that there's no hard deadline for this, I'll just keep extending the deadline as much as I'm able to until I find Koya's voice. I'm also keeping an eye (ear?) out for auditions that might fit other characters of mine.

Thank you again for auditioning! It's so, so difficult already. Probably going to have to arrange a couple callbacks. Good luck!

Paid: Hourly 25 USD

Queer man in his early-mid 20s. "Default" American accent, but honestly feel free to play with it. If you can do it, you can try to sneak a tiny bit of an Arabic accent in there with some of your takes (no specific dialect in mind. let me know which one specifically you did if you decide to take this on!). Baritone. More middle-range than low, but I'm open to whatever. I implore you to try out even if you don't fit anything here.

Koya is a pirate! He's also a pirate in the world of One Piece, so you've gotta be willing to get just a little silly with it. He's rough around the edges. He likes drinking, partying, and adventure. Koya, having grown up in the slums of the city of Brineport, doesn't have a formal education and certainly sounds like it. But he is intuitive and quick-witted--something reflected by his Devil Fruit power, which allows him to turn into a raven and half-raven hybrid at will. Not at all far beneath all of that, he's a kind and compassionate person who feels very deeply; a stark difference from the cynical, downtrodden, flightless bird he was before the Straw Hats came along. He's not super high-energy, and I'd like to see a little bit of gruffness in his voice.

Here is his Toyhouse page if you want to see where the audio will ultimately be posted or want to see more info about him.

  • (introducing self) "New to the Undertow, are you? They call me Koya. I'm just a sailor."

  • (slightly surprised, in response to compliment) “Most people freak out a little when I show up like this. Y’know. Giant talking bird and all.”

  • (shouting, disbelief) "What are you-- You can't just *play* with the cannon!"
