Modern Fae: a new fantasy podcast
Project Overview
Modern Fae is a new audio drama that centers around Diya Greenberg, a young woman who feels lost in her life, and makes the fateful decision to move to a tiny South Texan town to manage a bookstore. Little does she realize, but Encrucijada is much, much more than it seems. It is a haven for the legendary and mythological, the shadowy and supernatural. And it is in grave danger. Here, even the shadows have shadows, and something is stirring that threatens not only to consume the whole of this bastion of the fantastical, but the entire world. As she unravels the mysteries of Encrucijada, Diya learns to rely on new friends and allies. There’s Aoife, her landlady, will-they-won’t-they girlfriend, and oh, yeah, 1000 year old warrior, the changeling twins Tik and Tok, 700 year old preteens always looking for their next mark, and Clio, Isimud, and Mr. Enki, Diya’s eccentric co-workers at The Fount Bookstore. With them at her side, Diya confronts old and new evils, and in the process discovers who she truly can be.
Modern Fae is going to have a very large cast with many one-off and recurring characters, alongside the main cast of seven (Diya, Aoife, Tik and Tok, Mr. Enki, Clio, and Isimud). Because we don’t yet have all of the scripts and stories finished, this means we will have rolling auditions, and will occasionally cast as we go along. However, right now we will audition for the main cast (Diya and Tok have already been cast) and recurring characters from season 1.
The sides for all current characters can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1k-pSe8p0CA0BeGHeEEXTON22Pp40CWS59zaMKdEQoGI/edit?usp=sharing
You may audition for as many roles as you like; however, please note that only actors of color will be considered for characters of color.
Guidelines:
Please make sure you have a good location to record (free of background noise as much as possible, etc) and a decent mic with which to record.
Send your recorded sides, along with your name (however you would like to be identified), age, gender, etc. to [redacted]. We would prefer to cast people with similar background to the characters.
When you are logged in, you can comment, add submissions, create projects, upvote, search open roles, and way more. Login here.

About: A 1000 year old warrior of Irish legend, Aoife has seen and done a lot. She has loved and lost and dealt with some true horrors, but as a legend she is kept alive by faith and the storytelling of her former home. Now, having taken refuge in Encrucijada, she just wants to manage her rental property business, work out, and maybe find a new girlfriend. When she encounters Diya, she is instantly smitten, but has been so long out of the dating game that she struggles to let her true feelings be known. Aoife has long-standing trouble with both the Seelie and Unseelie Courts because of the many times that she has tricked them into giving her magical weaponry, etc. She is covertly fond of the changeling twins, Tik and Tok, and does what she can to make sure that they are safe and taken care of (without them knowing, of course). She is strong-willed, can be authoritative when she needs to be, and sometimes has a hard time with emotions.
Special skills preferred: Able to sing, if you are not Irish or Scottish, ability to do Irish/Scottish accent a plus!
(Record just Aoife's lines, please)
DIYA
And, um, you’re sure that this is the correct price? You’re really renting for $300 a month?
AOIFE
(Suddenly acting very offended)
Did you think I was lying?
DIYA
N-no! It just seems too good to be true. Like, there’s always a catch with something like this, usually.
AOIFE
(Cooly)
Well, there’s not. I just like providing affordable housing. I’m not like some damned--Well, not like some people in this town.
(Softening a bit)
Would you like the tour before I give you the keys?(Record just Aoife's lines, please)
AOIFE
(Slightly taken aback)
Okay, fair enough.
(Footsteps, door slamming)
Huh. Alright, now you two--GET AWAY FROM THE WINDOW, TOK. Both of you, listen to me. You know she’s new, she doesn’t understand what this place is yet. She doesn’t know the rules.
TOK
So what?
AOIFE
So that means, until she figures everything out--and I forbid you from telling her--I’m the one who’s dictating the rules regarding entering this house. So you are both going to stay out of this house, you are not going to go inside it, and you are not going to even try to get inside it. Nor will you make anyone else do so. Got it?
Age: About 700, just like their sister, both appear to be about 12 (and act like it)
Gender: Non-binary (uses they/them/he/him pronouns)
Sexuality: Doesn’t really know yet
Ethnicity: Any
Voice range: On the higher side, they and their sister were taken by the Fae right on the cusp of puberty
About: A non-binary (he/they) changeling stuck permanently at the age of 12, Tik was stolen, along with their twin Tok, by the two Fae Courts, as part of a wager to determine how well their respective child-rearing capabilities worked out. Tik was taken by the Unseelie Court, who rely on violence, fear, and intimidation to extract what they want from humans and other, but also have certain honor codes regarding lying and trickery. Tik, stayed with the Unseelie for several years, and picked up many of their mannerisms. He is obsessed with owning souls, and will use fear and violence to try and get to them. He broke free of his kidnappers, as Tik did from her’s, and together they ran away, using powerful wards they had stolen to keep themselves safe from the courts. Tik, like their sister, is essentially feral now, and has lived like that for centuries. He has picked up some of his sister’s mannerisms, and, for example, now uses some word tricks as well to get what he wants. They initially view Diya as just another mark, but they grow affectionate for her as time goes on. Tik refuses to lie, much to the chagrin of their sister, but is otherwise quite a terrifying kid who doesn’t like opening up. Like their sister, Tik inexplicably has taken on Californian mannerisms, though they have never been.

DIYA
Uh, kid, did you scare a raccoon around here?
TIK
Y’know, probably? I ate it sooo.
DIYA
Ohhh scary, yah got me, kid, very funny.
TIK
You’re the new one. Can I have your name?
DIYA
Um, I’m Diy--ugh, just call me Dee.
TIK
(Voice starting to distort)
That’s NOT YOUR REAL NAME.
DIYA
Kid, what the hell, where are your p--
TIK
(Voice distorting more)
TELL ME YOUR REAL NAME OR I’LL EAT YOU.
DIYA
Kid, calm down and go home. Or do you need to call someone???
TIK
THERE IS NO ONE LEFT TO CALL, DEE.(Record just, Tik's lines, please)
TOK
Just let me get on your shoulders and push it off with the stick, the horseshoe won’t, like, touch you.
TIK
Why do you always get on my shoulders. Like...uncool.
TOK
Cuz you’re not wearing hoop earrings, dude. Look, I promised you first dibs on her stuff when we get in.
TIK
Fine.

About: A worker at The Fount Bookstore, Clio is the Muse of History, and as such has an uncanny ability to pinpoint how the pasts of individuals has affected their present existence. This makes her both talkative and insightful, if oftentimes uncomfortably truthful. She is hopelessly gay, but has no skills whatsoever when it comes to flirtation and so is thus perpetually pining. She instantly gloms onto Diya as a new friend, and wants to support her through her new awakening (and also to help her get with Aoife!). She is almost always with Isimud; the two share a sibling like bond/rivalry and are always ribbing each other. She is somewhat at a loss with what to do with the twins. Clio is a non-stop chatterbox, has a bubbly but occasionally sarcastic personality, and is always game to try new things.
CLIO
Actually we heard what you said, promptly forgot it, and then played bowling using the Encylopaedia Britannica as the pins.CLIO
Oh yes, we get lots of customers usually. Tons, really. I think they’re avoiding us right now because they don’t know what to make of you. Cuz you’re new to town ‘n all. I don’t think that’s very chill of them, personally, I think you’re great. Right, Isi?
Age: Over 4000, looks and sounds to be in his twenties or thirities

Voice range: Lower vocal range preferred
About: Originally a semi-deity in service to Enki, Isi is a somewhat glum and morose worker at The Fount Bookstore. He feels that his life has stagnated and keeps trying to “invigorate” himself, to little success. He wants to find the passion he once had, but has no real skills to find it. However, the arrival of Diya sparks in him a new interest in the human experience, which is somewhat alien to him. He is almost always around Clio, and is often the butt of her jokes and stray observations. Isi is terrified of the twins.
(Record only Isi's lines, please)
ISIMUD
Ah, shit, old man, this place is big but there’s no need to scream.
ENKI
Isi, what have I told you about using that kind of language in the shop?
ISIMUD
Oh, I remember what you said, I just chose not to follow what you said.(Record only Isi's lines, please)
ISIMUD
Yeah, you are pretty nice, I would say. You’re a much nicer boss than Enki. And our last boss.
DIYA
(Somewhat flattered)
Well, I’m glad I’m working here, and that I met you both. What happened with your last manager, though?
CLIO
Oh, he died. Got on the wrong side of--
ISIMUD
(Coughs loudly)
The wrong side of the road! Got hit by a car. Real tragedy. It was very sad.

Voice range: Mid-range preferred
About: The owner and creator of The Fount Bookstore in Encrucijada, Mr. Enki is the ancient Sumerian god of knowledge, mischief, crafts, and water. He is responsible, in many ways, for the wellspring of civilization: the knowledge, faith, belief, passion, care, and fortitude of humanity. This is also what, somewhat paradoxically, keeps him and all of the other residents of Encrucijada alive and well. He is a somewhat mischievous old man, extremely wily, and quick on his feet, even at nearly 7000 years old. He is also prone to bouts of melancholy, as he can feel humanity poised on a knife’s edge: always teetering between collaboration and creation, and ignorance and destruction. He wants to train Diya to be a new guardian, a human guardian who can fix the things that he couldn’t, and while he truly believes in, and wants the best for, her, he may sometimes go too far in pushing his own agenda at times.
(Record only Enki's lines, please)
DIYA
Is that...clay?
ENKI
It is indeed. I know most people have gone digital, but I like to have hard copies of these sorts of things; one can never be too careful with important documents!
DIYA
Okay, uh, Mr...Enki, it’s just. Well, who the hell writes a contract in clay??
(Bad attempt at a joke)
I thought that kind of thing went out of fashion 6000 years ago!
(Loud and very forced laughter from both of them)
ENKI
You are, of course, correct, and I do have a paper copy here, my dear.
(shuffle of papers)
I just like to have the clay as, ah, a more symbolic representation of our work agreement and of my very deep interest in ancient cultures and their ways.

About: Mustardseed is a fae barista at the Bean There, Done That coffee shop, located across the street from The Fount Bookstore. She is exceedingly clever, is not affiliated with any Court, and makes friends easily. Clio has a massive crush on her, which Mustardseed knows, but is unwilling to make the first move. She is very personable, takes no bullshit, and, being a barista, has her ear to the ground and knows most of what is going on in Encrucijada. She will be a recurring role for season 1.
(Record only Mustardseed's lines, please)
DIYA
Oh, I actually got a job managing the bookstore across the street. I needed, um, a change of pace.
MUSTARDSEED
Ah, I see...well, you wouldn’t be the first. So you’re working with those old farts over there, then?
DIYA
Old…? I’m sorry, who d’you mean?
MUSTARDSEED
I mean, Enki and Isi are old af, aren’t they? And Clio, phew, she’s not much younger, y’know?

About: Norna is one of the Norns, a being who knows and manipulates the destinies of all sentient beings, gods and humans alike. She is somewhat opaque in her proclamations, as many oracles tend to be, but she is actively invested in helping the protagonists, and is willing to give Diya nudges in the right direction when needed. She has a somewhat caustic sense of humor and acts grandmotherly in the sense that the often give unasked for and unwanted advice.
(Record only Norna's lines, please)
NORNA
Here you go, and keep the change, dear. You know, I wasn’t sure at first, but you are going to do well here, I think.
DIYA
Uh, thank you?
NORNA
Thank you. Have a good day. And Isi, stand straighter, will you? No nice man will notice you slumped over like that.
