Miscreants and Malcontents

Project Overview

Miscreants and Malcontents is an original, standalone, medieval fantasy radio drama and Episode 2 of Transmissions from the Forgotten Coast. The story follows two sisters, one blind and one fiercely protective, as they race through a storm-battered forest to save their cursed father. When they take shelter at a remote inn, a single night draws them into deception, danger, and a confrontation with the very warlock who set their lives on its current desperate course.

This is a character-driven, atmospheric audio production with a strong emphasis on captivating (at times even theatrical) performance and emotional sincerity. The tone blends intimate sisterly warmth with genuine tension and dark fantasy. Think less sword-and-sorcery, more candlelit drama with teeth.

Audition deadline is May 15th.

We were fortunate enough to have the help of composers and musicians who created an original soundtrack for Episode 1: Dinah's Bayou. At this time, we are working on preparing a new soundtrack specifically for Episode 2: Miscreants and Malcontents.

  • Fully Casted

Thank you to all who auditioned for Miscreants and Malcontents. All roles have been cast. However, many of you gave memorable and impressive performances that made the casting process difficult. Fortunately, this is only the second episode in the series and there are more episodes on the way. Please keep a lookout for the next casting call! I’m kicking myself on behalf of quite a few of you for not having a character to cast you as. Thank you so much for taking the time to read for Miscreants and Malcontents

Role assigned to: Amanda Lynn Newkirk

Elise is intelligent, composed, and unexpectedly mischievous. She's verbose and should come off a bit theatrical. Blind since childhood after an encounter with a spirit, she possesses a miraculous healing gift she guards closely. She navigates the world through touch, sound, and intuition. Her warmth is real, but she is also a risk-taker — drawn to games of chance with a confidence that unnerves people. Her burden is immense, and her love for her family is the heart of the story.

  • (Playful, mischievous) Oh, Johanna, you have such a low view of strangers. The money we have couldn't buy us a full meal anyway. Let me try.

  • Come dusk, my dad found me behind a waterfall, standing stark still, staring into the water. When dad picked me up and held me, he saw my eyes. He says they looked just like clouded crystals then. That wore off, but ever since looking into that waterfall, I’ve never seen a thing.

  • (Grief stricken, breaking) It's my fault. I put her in danger. I should have done this on my own, Lucian.

Role assigned to: Caulie

Lucien is charming, a little roguish, and smarter than he lets on. He runs games of cards and dice with practiced ease, and hides a genuine generosity beneath the hustle. His relationship with his mother(Ylva) is complicated, and his grief is quiet. He ends the story changed.

Johanna is practical, guarded, and fiercely devoted to Elise. Where her sister leans into risk, Johanna braces against it. She wears her worry openly and pushes back often — but there is tenderness beneath every sharp word. She is also physically capable, and the production includes combat sound design that she must perform alongside.

Ylva is a no-nonsense businesswoman with a self-taught knowledge of herbs and a face marked by a warlock's curse. She is brusque but fair. She is not a villain, not a saint — just a woman who made one mistake and has been paying for it ever since.

Note: this role also requires a brief moment of monstrous vocalization as the Warlock inhabits her form.

  • (Low, controlled threat) You dare to get my hopes up? You had better not be playing me for a fool. You'd regret that.

Role assigned to: Marc Hughes

Raynier presents as affable and even gentlemanly, simply a traveling merchant who's had some bad luck. His charm is deliberate, and his menace builds slowly. By the time he reveals himself, it should feel inevitable. He is not theatrical in his villainy; he is matter-of-fact about it, which makes him more unsettling. His plague-thinned composure and casual cruelty should feel lived-in.

  • (Eerily unbothered) Oh, I know… you found my horse. Such a shame really, she was a trustworthy mare.

  • (Businesslike) You're not the only ones who need money. I know some miscreants and malcontents who'd gladly cough up 100 gold for two healthy young things like you.

The Warlock

Role assigned to: Nathaniel Williams

The Warlock has been operating in the background the entire story as a rumor, a threat, and the reason for everything. When he finally appears, he is theatrical but cold, capable of mockery and genuine menace in the same breath. His voice will be processed in post, but the underlying performance must carry wit and predatory intelligence. He should not sound like a generic monster. He sounds like someone truly enveloped by evil.

  • (Quiet, focused) A great power lives inside of you. And I've found out how to take it. (a hiss, or a sigh) I'm going to eat you.
