(Looking for singers to bring to life) Toradora: The Musical
Project Overview
Me and my friend have been working for about a year now to bring to life our vision for a fan-made Toradora musical, primarily in a jazz style and really focusing on the idea of teenage years being performance. We plan on releasing the songs and maybe a read through of the script to YouTube. It's still in development so we'll be working on songs while others are being recorded, thanks for your interest! And as this is an audio format don't worry about casting type or anything! Just do your best and let your voice speak for itself. Here are some of the instrumental tracks to give you a feel of some of the music so far:

Ryuji is the main character of the piece, a sweet, but dim boy with a scary face. Despite his appearance, he is always ready to put in the work for those he cares about.
Vocally looking for a Frank Sinatra type baritone with strong highs in the E4-F4 area, but with the strength to mostly stick in the bottom of his range (the C3-A2) area. Should be able to sustain a low note with confidence. (Optional sustained G4 as well for those on the higher end)
Will have solo parts in 12 songs
(Introspectively)
"Sorry dad, but having your genes? It’s caused me nothing but trouble. If I didn’t have your face people wouldn’t be scared of me, the “Palm Top Tiger” would leave me alone… Might even have more confidence. Maybe then- Oh yeah! That career plan!"
(Reassuring)
"Never seen anything like this huh? So, there’s this girl I like, and that is a hypothetical list of songs I’d play for her at a concert. I’m not much of a musician but, oh! And those are my mix-tapes for her, and that’s my book of poems! See, absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about, you were actually gonna do something about your crush. I just have a box of fantasies."
Sing a snippet of a jazz song for a baritone: (Ex. I Can't Help Falling In Love, My Way, Luck Be A Lady, Everybody Says Don't, etc)
Taiga is the second lead of the piece, the aggressive but short “Palm Top Tiger”. She is often very angry, and sometimes violent, but deep down she feels isolated and alone. Finding true friendship and love in Ryuji.
Vocally looking for an Alto with a sweet head voice to get around the C5 area and strong A3s down to a sustained E3. A mezzo on the lower end could also sing her parts.
Will have solo parts in 11 songs
(Angry)
"Why doesn’t anyone understand us, Ryuji? We’re just a couple of nervous wrecks like anyone else but no! “Dangerous criminal”, “Palm Top Tiger” it’s all a bunch of bullshit and it’s starting to PISS ME OFF!"
(Stumbling over herself)
"No… I don’t dislike him- He’s… He goes out of his way to cook things and… and gives me advice with you. He set this up for me, lied for me… He’s why I’m standing here right now in front of you."
Sing a snippet of a jazz song for an alto: (Ex. Dream A Little Dream of Me, La Vie En Rose, Happy To Keep His Dinner Warm, The Gentleman Is A Dope, etc)
Kitamura is a secondary lead in this piece, Ryuji’s best friend, the school’s ace. A boy who oozes charisma and kindness, but deep down can't live up to his own expectations of himself.
Vocally, I'm looking for a Paul Anka type Tenor who doesn't necessarily need very strong low notes, but some competence below D3. Very strong highs from F4 onward but won't go much higher than G4. A high baritone could also sing his parts. (Also minor rap skills for one part)
Will have solo parts in 9 songs.
(Gently)
"Well, compared to then you’ve been happier… It’s been a week of seeing you and him around school together and I can’t help but think that’s why… He’s a great guy you know. And if you can see it… Well that tells me you’re pretty awesome too!"
(Kinda corny)
"Guess I should introduce everyone: This is Ami Kawashima! We used to be neighbors back in the day, we’ve been friends for as long as I can remember. And Ami, these are my best buds Ryuji Takasu and Taiga Aisaka. I think you’ll really grow to like them."
Sing a snippet of a jazz song for a tenor: (Ex. Put Your Head On My Shoulder, Fly Me To The Moon, Brotherhood of Man, Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat, etc)
Minori is a secondary lead in the piece, Taiga’s best friend, peppy jack of all trades. Minori is firing on all cylinders most of the time, very energetic, but very sincere.
Vocally I'm looking for a Mezzo-Soprano who is strongest from A3-D5. While she goes higher and lower than this throughout, she most frequently sings in that range. Looking for a bright belter with a nice head voice but some grit in the lower areas down to F3.
Will have solo parts in 8 songs
(Way too hyperactive)
"Oh. My. GOSH! I didn’t know this, I mean, I didn’t know you two were so close! I mean you’re walking home together I mean, wait! (She lets out a shrill gasp) Are you two… Lovebirds? NO! Loverssss?"
(Confidently and nonchalantly)
"Yep! I’m a waitress here and at a karaoke bar, I’m a clerk at the grocery store, an amateur dietician and a part time cell phone stylist if you wanna spice up that boring case of yours!"
Sing a snippet of a jazz song for a mezzo-soprano: (Ex. I Wish You Love, How Glad I Am, Honey Bun, Anything Goes, etc)
Ami is a secondary lead in the piece, Yusaku’s old friend, alpha bitch. Ami pretends early on to be kind and sweet, when in reality she really is just a cynical alpha bitch. She learns to accept this about herself but still harshly criticizes others.
Vocally I'm looking for a sweet soprano voice with strong highs in the F#5-G5 area, and vocal agility you'd find in a Disney princess. Really lay on the irony of the sweet sounding cynic. Has some lows down to A3 but doesn't stay there too long.
Will have solo parts in 8 songs
(Coldly)
"What a drag, hey, wanna make yourself useful and get me some more iced tea (TAIGA ignores and flips through the magazine) Wow, looks like someone’s got a bit of an attitude- I’ll just get your boyfriend to do it! With how he’s acting now I’m sure he’ll do anything I ask. You don’t mind if I steal him do you? Not that I even want him, with that scary face."
(Angry)
"You!! You’re the reason I had to change schools! It’s because of you I binge on snacks all the time now! I’ve been letting you beat me all this time, well no more! No more! No more cutesy crap or whatever. You’re gonna leave me the fuck alone!"
Sing a snippet of a jazz song for a soprano: (Ex. Summertime, My Favorite Things, If I Were A Bell, 'Til There Was You, etc)
Yasuko is a supporting character in the piece, Ryuji’s loving mother. A bit ditzy and prone to saying obscene things innocently, Yasuko has a deep mother instinct and a big heart.
Vocally looking for an Alto with a smooth voice that can carry a ballad on her own. While not necessarily going much lower than F3, she won't be going out of her chest voice for her songs.
Will have solo parts in 4 songs
(Innocently)
"I remember when this picture was taken. God, your dad. What a hunk! Used to keep magazines under his shirt in case someone tried to stab him! So cool- and I’m sure he’s just as cool in heaven!"
Sing a snippet of a jazz song for an alto: (Ex. Cry Me A River, As Long As He Needs Me, etc)
Yuri is a supporting character in the piece, homeroom teacher of class 2-C. She has a fierce resentment of her students because despite only being 29, she sees them as a reminder that she's getting older.
Vocally looking for a strong soprano soloist who can flex her higher range, while having a gruffer low range from B3 and lower. Almost a villainous quality of voice.
Will have solo parts in 4 songs
(Terrified)
"No no no! It’s fine it’s fine it’s fine. You don’t need a nearly thirty year old spinster telling you what to do just please don’t hurt meeeee!"
Sing a snippet of an up-tempo song for a soprano: (Ex. June Is Busting Out All Over, I Could Have Danced All Night, etc)
Koji is a supporting character in the piece and part of the Featured Four, the goofiest classmate in class 2-C. A bit of a punk, but well meaning, Koji is a funny and charming personality around the school and first to accept Ryuji.
Vocally looking for a strong, if a bit raspy tenor. Featured in the opening number with strong mid register, only going down to D3, and consistent F4s and a sustained A4 at the top.
Will have solo parts in 3 songs
(Pathetically scared)
"Oh my god, Takasu I’m so sorry please don’t kill me please, take my wallet, my keys (etc, adlib). Please don’t kill me pleeeease!"
Sing a snippet of a jazz song for a tenor: (Ex. Technicolor Dreams, Younger Than Springtime)
Kanou is a supporting character in the piece, the student council president. The cold authoritarian of the school with an iron fist, and who Kitamura chooses to stand beside until the end.
Vocally, looking for a low alto with comfortability in the G3 area, without going much higher than A4. In her duet with Taiga, she will be taking the low harmonies, so should be able to harmonize well.
Will have solo parts in 3 songs
(Motivationally)
"Haven't you already lifted your foot, preparing to step forward? Then you only have one option. Finish taking that step!"
Sing a snippet of a jazz song for a low alto: (Ex. Someone To Watch Over Me, I Resolve, etc)
Rikurou is a supporting character in the piece, Taiga’s absentee father. A man of money who throws luxury at Taiga without care for what she really needs. Whether he just doesn't understand it, or doesn't really care is uncertain.
Vocally, I'm looking for a gruff, but warm sounding bass voice with ease to the top and bottom of the bass staff, without extending much past C4 in the highs or G2 in the lows. A lower baritone could also sing his parts.
Will have solo parts in 2 songs.
(Solemnly)
"Anyway, my new wife, Yuu. Things got so bad with her that Taiga and her couldn't live under the same roof anymore... Taiga left. But that's all in the past now! I want her to come back!"
Sing a snippet of a jazz song for a bass: (Ex. Nature Boy, A Fellow Needs A Girl, etc)
Hisamitsu is a featured character in the piece and part of the Featured Four, the most blunt classmate in class 2-C. Koji's best friend who acts as a pseudo-narrator throughout.
Vocally looking for a baritone to act as counter to Koji's tenor when they sing together. Sings most often in the D3-D4 area but needs a strong F4 at the top.
Will have solo parts in 2 songs
(As an announcer)
"Well what is high school but performance?"
Sing a snippet of a jazz song for a baritone: (Ex. I Can't Help Falling In Love, My Way, Luck Be A Lady, Everybody Says Don't, etc)
Maya is a featured character in the piece and part of the Featured Four, the most outgoing classmate in class 2-C. part of Ami's posse who acts as a pseudo-narrator throughout.
Vocally looking for a mezzo-soprano to sing top harmonies between her and Nanako. Sings most often in the E4-E5 area so needs a strong head voice.
Will have solo parts in 2 songs
(As an announcer)
"What is life but a grand story?"
Sing a snippet of a jazz song for a mezzo-soprano: (Ex. I Wish You Love, How Glad I Am, Honey Bun, Anything Goes, etc)
Nanako is a featured character in the piece and part of the Featured Four, the most quiet classmate in class 2-C. part of Ami's posse who acts as a pseudo-narrator throughout.
Vocally looking for a mezzo-soprano to sing bottom harmonies between her and Maya. Sings most often in the B3-B4 area so needs a resonant lower range.
Will have solo parts in 2 songs
(As an announcer)
"We will see. Now: Let us begin!"
Sing a snippet of a jazz song for an alto: (Ex. Dream A Little Dream of Me, La Vie En Rose, Happy To Keep His Dinner Warm, The Gentleman Is A Dope, etc)
