Let's Read Franken Fran - Chapter 1

Let's Read Franken Fran - Chapter 1

Project Overview

Since nobody else has done one yet (for some reason), this is a Let's Dub/Let's Read for the horror manga series Franken Fran. Or, at the very least, a test run using the first chapter of it.

Because the series contains heavy medical gore, strong language, nudity, and just about every conceivable "theme of a potentially distressing nature", all potential actors are going to have to be 18+. Consider this also a warning that this dub will not be for the faint of heart.

That said, the mature and dark subject matter isn't an excuse to be an edgelord. So, y'know. This should really go without saying, but don't be a dick. Other things to bear in mind are:

- HAVE THE TIME. Should this project get off the ground and we decide to dub the whole manga, you'll likely have a lot of recording to do. Don't sign up for a major part if you won't have the time to commit to it.

- HAVE A DECENT MIC/RECORDING QUALITY. It doesn't have to be crystal-clear, professional-quality or anything, but a Let's Read is only as good as its actors, and an actor is only as good as their equipment will allow. I don't want to hear screaming babies or barking dogs in the background, and I want to be able to actually understand what you're saying.

- HAVE SOME METHOD OF GETTING IN CONTACT. It can be email, Skype, Discord, Facebook, Twitter, carrier pigeon, astral projection, Tumblr, anything so long as I can actually communicate with you. Which brings me to;

- STAY IN CONTACT. Please don't disappear off the face of the earth. I understand if you want to or have to leave the project, but please tell me, so I know to try and find a replacement!

And, as a final note, I would recommend reading the actual manga, or at the very least the first chapter to get a better sense of the context for the audition lines! Should the project continue, scripts will most likely be sent out in the form of translated scans, so, actors will have references for their characters' expressions and context for their lines.

Happy Acting, and good luck! -LSP

Fran Madaraki is the eponymous protagonist of Franken Fran. She is a talented scientific researcher and surgeon, but often spacey and naive. Similarly, she is capable of both being soft-hearted and caring, or downright sadistic. As such, her voice needs to be able to be both endearing and terrifying, sometimes at the same time. Fran often seems to shudder, twitch, and waver, so try experimenting with giving her voice a sort of lilting, unsteady tone. Or not, if it just ends up sounding silly. Just try it and see what works.

  • Just think about it. A human being is more than just flesh and bone moving around. Making a corpse move again is a simple matter, but giving that corpse the personality it had in life is very difficult. There's past knowledge, habits, memories, even innate personality traits, and all of them have to be accounted for, because if any are missing, then he won't be the same person he was before.

  • Today's operation is going to be too intricate for only one set of hands, so, I made a slight modification! Just take a good long rest, and when you wake up, everything will be over! Oh, and, before I forget, this procedure is going to cost four hundred million yen. Also, I may end up having to remove some organs, so, you know. Pardon the dust. Now... Let's begin the operation!

  • Artificial heart is operational! Nerve response found, blood vessels connected. We're moving on to the son. Now performing organ removal! Send three point eight volts to the brain stem in three second intervals! System unification is looking favorable, prepare the amp... Cerebral extraction from the parent is complete!

Okita is Fran's cat-bodied... Friend? Assistant? Test subject? The exact specifics of their relationship aren't clear. Regardless, he's a human head sewn onto a cat body, and a recurring character throughout the series. I picture him as having a sort of 'generic anime guy' voice, but, again, just do whatever you think works!

  • My, what a rude little man. A monster? Don't you see that Fran is the professor's ultimate masterpiece? If that girl felt like it, it would be child's play for her to bring your son back to life. After all, it's because of her that we're able to live at all.

  • What? You can't just fix the corpse up and turn him back on?

  • Hey! Fran! Stop slacking off and give me a hand with this!

Mr Matsui is a wealthy businessman who comes to Fran asking her to revive his son after a car accident. However, his intentions for doing so may not be as pure as they originally appear.

  • My career has always gotten in the way of being a good father. But my wife... My wife cared for him enough for the both of us. Now... She's not able to cope with my son's passing. I know that this is a great deal to ask, but, as a father... I must do everything possible...

  • That's why I'm relying on Madaraki to help. All I need is someone that I can point to and say "he's alive". If his heart beats and his legs move, the inside can be empty for all I care. At least that way he wouldn't talk back!

  • This is pathetic! And it's all that blithering old man's fault. Who ever heard of giving ninety percent of your estate to your grandchild? Especially a worthless brat like Yuujirou. What part of that pretentious good-for-nothing deserves all that money?

Mr Matsui's personal assistant. There isn't much else to say on the matter.

  • The police say that the crash was caused by excessive speed. But, in actuality, he was trying to avoid a child in the road. The young master fell in with a tough crowd, but he was actually incredibly kind.

  • This is ridiculous! What the hell is this place!?

  • Still, killing him was a bit... Excuse me, I mean, news of his "accident" will only serve to worsen your current position.
