Shuu is a young girl with light purple hair and blue eyes. The root of her hair is significantly darker than the ends but the color is so light, her hair almost looks white. She is also the only character with drooping eyes. In addition to her normal attire, she wears a scarf around her neck, even during summer. She has a pretty cold attitude towards people. She somewhat hates interacting with Nejima (due to him and his love complex). She is protective to Misaki (shown by how far she's willing to go just to make her friend, Misaki happiness a reality). She is the granddaughter of the Yukari Law inventor, Minister Ryou Igarashi. She still maintains a close relationship with the Ministry. It was said that she will take the place in the ministry as a matchmaker in the future (due to her being a genius)
*Narrating* The "Law to Combat Low Birth Rates", also known as the Yukari Law, went into effect 40 years ago. When this country's boys and girls turn 16, they receive a notification of who their future spouse will be, and romance with anyone besides their assigned partner is forbidden. Because of this policy, the birth rate has stabilized, and the children born of such matcheshave higher average intelligence. These "Yukari Marriages" which promote happiness based on genetics, are also known as the "Red Strings of Science". But there was an ordinary boy who was in love and unhappy with this system.

First-year student at Kasugayama High. He is one of the main character in the story and a close friend of Yukari Nejima. Both being classmates. Although he does not have romantic feelings for Misaki, Yukari mistakenly thinks that Yūsuke is also in love with her. Yūsuke is a laid-back individual. He is outspoken and displays a calm and composed attitude. Despite being extremely popular for his look, Yūsuke doesn't like to be the center of attention and, as a result, is distant and prefers to stay away from people, having only few friends at school. Around Yukari, Yūsuke exposes a softer attitude. Probably due to the fact that they are close friends, Yūsuke seems to be worried for his friend when the latter opens up about his fears and problems; something that he normally does not do with anybody else.
Well I think he finally got his notification yesterday.

The main heroine of the series. She is a first-year student at Kasugayama High and the classmate of Yukari and Yusuke. After hearing Yukari's confession, Misaki reciprocates her feelings. Later, she is reluctant to enter a relationship with him due to the government's arranged marriage policy. She's a nice and outgoing young woman. She has no preference over whom she befriends to. She also loves Yukari very much but is troubled by the thought of having a relationship with him while he has an assigned wife.

The another heroine of the series. She is a second-year student at Rijou Girls Academy, a prestigious all-girls high school in her neighborhood. She is the marriage partner assigned by the government for Yukari Nejima. She claims to have no special feelings for Yukari and even become a matchmaker between him and Misaki. She is very interested in romantic stories and encounters. She considers Misaki to be her first friend, and upon realizing this she went as far as crying. Ririna is shown to be a bit oblivious to what love really is like, as shown when she supposedly 'fell in love' with a mannequin at a hospital when she was little and confined in there. She also cried after she became friends with Misaki and thought that she fell in love with her. Ririna is also sensitive to words, as shown when she reacted to what Yusuke said about her being a virgin. She also walked away when Arisa tried to call her numerous nicknames; a part of Arisa's plan of befriending Ririna.
Yukari Nejima? That's a strange name.
