Gyro is a master of the Spin and an executioner hailing from the Kingdom of Naples. He joins the Steel Ball Run race to win amnesty for a child he is assigned to execute. Gyro's signature weapons are his special Steel Balls that produce and manipulate the Spin - the mastery of which later allows him access to the senescence-inducing Stand Ball Breaker.

Gyro is a man of average to above-average height and medium to athletic build. He has long hair that reaches mid-back, light-colored eyes, and square patches of facial hair lining his jaw, four on each side. He either wears grills or has chiseled into prosthetic teeth the phrase "GO! GO! ZEPPELI".

Throughout the Steel Ball Run race, Gyro wears a variety of outfits to suit the weather of the current location. However, they all maintain the same key elements and motifs of his wide-brimmed hat and slit goggles, a dark shirt studded with miniature steel balls, a cape wrapped around his shoulders that splits into three segments, and his large belt with special holsters for his two Steel Balls.

Diego Brando is a genius British jockey hailed as one of the best contenders in the Steel Ball Run race, but he soon shifts his attention to the Saint's Corpse. Diego becomes a powerful intermittent rival to both Gyro and Johnny. Although he works with different factions during the course of the race, Diego is only loyal to himself. 

Diego is a young man of below-average height and slim to medium build. He has light hair, dark eyebrows, and light, sharp eyes. He commonly wears an equestrian helmet with the letters "DIO" loosely mounted on bending pins emerging from a small ribbon tied at its front, a turtleneck jumper patterned with a diagonal grid, light, mid-forearm-length gloves, jodhpurs with flared hips, and tall, dark riding boots.

After obtaining the Corpse's left eye and fusing it with his own, his left eye's iris has the word "TURBO" engraved on it, and he temporarily gains a mark under said eye reading "DIO", contrasting to the cross Gyro gains from the right eye.

Funny Valentine is the 23rd president of the United States and the true mastermind behind the Steel Ball Run race. He watches the competition from behind the curtains and hopes to gather the Saint's Corpse as a means to further the United States' ambitions. Valentine is a Stand user, wielding the powerful Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and its ability to travel across parallel worlds. He later unlocks the even more powerful ability D4C Love Train.

Throughout the narrative, Valentine adopts two main appearances, differing greatly in build. He is originally introduced as an old, stout, overweight man. Around the time he takes the rib cage of the Saint's Corpse, he gains a more fit and muscular appearance.

Valentine bears deep scars spanning his back, in a pattern resembling that of the 21st-century flag of the United States.

Valentine's foremost characteristic is his deep patriotism. Marked by the gruesome fate of his father, Valentine's goal is for the United States to stand over the rest of the world. To do so, he seeks the blessing of the Saint Corpse Parts, becoming ecstatic when the Corpse blesses him. Moreover, the President shows a great degree of determination toward this goal.

Steven Steel is a mature man standing at around 190 cm. He is bald, but covers the top of his head with a smooth cap with serrated edges. His attire usually consists of a high collared coat decorated with several tassels on the collar and assorted pants. Steven also wears small rectangular glasses.

Steven Steel is shown to be an anxious character despite bearing a bold facade as the organizer and host of the Steel Ball Run race. During most of his life, Steven Steel has cultivated a bombastic and eccentric persona, becoming a performer, sportsman and other jobs in the center of the stage, but would find his calling as a promoter for various events. Despite the ups and downs of his career, Steven has managed to always rebound to success. Steven also projects the image of a stern and confident promoter who tackles any problem with calm and authority. When a clerk reports numerous problems during the preparations, Steven calmly raises the budget and orders to make it clear troublemakers will be thrown out.

Privately, Steven is full of doubts and only dreams of a modest amount of fame, being content that a paper would print his name even at the bottom of the page as long his contribution was acknowledged. All these thoughts he only shares with Lucy.

Steven Steel is a romantic man holding several ideals. He notably promotes the Steel Ball Run as a testament to mankind's pioneer spirit, intending to make it so for the first time, a lone man crosses the United States with his horse and accepting all other vehicles used in the race as a challenge to this spirit. He also considers that "true failure" is to abandon this pioneer spirit and avoid hardships.

Steven Steel is also content with the bit of fame his events grant him but doesn't seem to be after monetary gains, as he offered all of the profit from the race to various causes and also refused to throw a fight during his career as a boxer, even if he was shot in the knee by gangsters. Steven also made the effort to save Lucy from the mafia as repayment for her support.

Lucy is the wife of the Steel Ball Run race promoter, Steven Steel. She eventually discovers Funny Valentine's plan for the race and, fearing for her husband's safety, decides to cooperate with the duo, Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli.

Lucy is a fourteen-year-old girl of average height and build. She has light, medium-length hair and an outfit generally consisting of a dress and striped tights. She also wears arm warmers and tall boots, both adorned with circular decorations.

Later, after she is kidnapped by Funny Valentine, her outfit is simplified to only a dress and a pair of pumps, and her hair is slightly longer than before. During her final appearance, Lucy is seen wearing a hood, while also regaining her arm warmers and boots but without any tights underneath.

Pocoloco joins the Steel Ball Run race inspired by a fortune-teller who gives him news of his peaking luck. Through that luck, he becomes one of the fiercest competitors of the race. Pocoloco also happens to be a Stand user, whose Hey Ya! exists to cheer him up.

Pocoloco is a dark-skinned man of below-average to average height and slim or medium build. He sports a horseshoe mustache. Throughout the race, Pocoloco wears a light, cropped tank top and pants, which sport a brick-like pattern. He is also seen wearing a harness, knee high boots, and a classic leather aviator helmet covered with distinctive elliptical pieces. During the crossing of the frozen strait, he wears a long-sleeved shirt sporting a similar design as his tank top.

Pocoloco is cheerful and carefree. He is introduced in repose, counting clouds, before expressing his elation at the recent news of his peaking fortune, as told by a local fortune teller. His elderly co-worker perceives him as idle and naive. Pocoloco develops incredible faith in his luck, realizing it where acts that would have otherwise been unfortunate end up saving him and lending him improbable advantages during the race. Thus, he often makes expressions of amazement and joy, including variations of the exclamation "UH OH!".

Working as a cowboy and bounty hunter, Mountain Tim is announced as a leading competitor in the Steel Ball Run. During the first stages of the race, Tim becomes one of Johnny and Gyro's allies. He is also a Stand user and is able to shift through his lasso with his ability, Oh! Lonesome Me.

Mountain Tim is a man of average to above-average height, average build and has light hair. He later acquires a scar crossing his face.

He wears a stereotypical range of cowboy attire; his hat has a zebra print with a miniature cow's skull as a decoration, while the clothing on his upper torso is coated with a leopard print, his belt gun holster, and his scarf has a leopard print. He wears a sheriff's badge in the shape of a five-pointed star on his left side.

Mountain Tim is introduced as a benevolent bounty hunter who is well acquainted with the law and is stated to have made many friends. Although he participates in the Steel Ball Run, Tim quickly abandons his goal to give chase to a participant assassinating the competition. It seems his benevolence is such that horses intuit a sense of great respect for him, bowing their heads when he approaches. At the moment of his death, Mountain Tim confesses that he never expected to die a peaceful death but longed for at least a place to return after his journey.

Hot Pants is a jockey who was sent to the Steel Ball Run race in disguise by the Kingdom of Naples and the Vatican in order to interfere with the collecting of the Saint Corpse Parts. Throughout the story she assists Gyro, Johnny, Lucy, and Diego in opposing the American government's plan to gather the Corpse. Hot Pants is also a Stand user and wields Cream Starter.

Hot Pants is a woman of above-average height, medium build, and short straight hair. However, her androgynous traits and loose clothes allow her to pass off as a man.

Hot Pants's whole body is covered by a baggy striped suit that is further covered with a long blouse. It is decorated with metallic decorations of flowers and leaves, is lined with fur, and has a second layer of cloth covering Hot Pants's chest. Hot Pants also has various accessories such as a fur cap decorated with a single spike at its top, furred elbow pads, and assorted leg warmers. She also wears a belt bearing the letters "HP". Hot Pants keeps Cream Starter in two holsters located on both sides of her hip.

Hot Pants speaks in a particularly rough and masculine manner despite her gender, for instance using the pronoun Ore (オレ) to refer to herself. This and her clothes allow her to pretend to be a man and perform her mission under an alias.

Sandman comes from a community in the Arizona Desert. Despite being ostracized, he hopes that winning the Steel Ball Run race will earn him the money to buy back his ancestor's land and becomes one of the fiercest competitors in the race thanks to his running technique. He eventually sides with Funny Valentine and battles Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli near the Mississippi River to take their Saint's Corpse parts. Sandman is a Stand user who wields In a Silent Way in battle.

Sandman is a man of average to above-average height and athletic build. He wears his mostly light hair in two long braids crossing his face. He is sparsely clothed, with a few tattoos around his body. On both side of his biceps is a tattoo of a slithering snake inside a circle, lined with triangles pointing inward, while on his right chest are three lines that resemble check marks.

Sandman is introduced as an open-minded member of his community, for instance shown in the possession of books expressively forbidden by them due to originating from white settlers and having developed his unique and admittedly extraordinary running style while ignoring his people's own techniques. Sandman is critical of his community, highlighting to his sister their outdated views and their misconceptions. For instance he claims that the idea of a claim to an ancestral land is out-of-date when the majority of the population now thinks on a financial level. Nonetheless, he is ready to take the risk to participate in a continent-spanning horse race to give back stolen lands to them, showing a great degree of loyalty.

Sugar Mountain has the appearance of a young girl, with dark hair in a hime cut and straight, eyebrow-level bangs. She wears a bonnet, a necklace in the shape of a cluster of grapes, a short dark dress with a light one underneath, leopard-patterned sleeves, and long socks with a pair of leather boots.

Behaving much like a young child with a vivid imagination, Sugar Mountain does not seem to have aged physically or mentally during the roughly fifty years she spent bound to the Tree. She passes her time playing make-believe with dolls made from cloth and twigs, and has drawn rooms for an entire 'house' within the tree-hollow she lives in. Johnny deduces that she is nearly blind, noticing the mark of a cane around her abode. In spite of her childish mannerisms, she highly values honesty, and is able to comport herself with some maturity when she explains the Tree and the nature of its Stand to Johnny and Gyro, making sure that they understand that they must use up all of the items given by the spring by sunset. She expresses a strong desire to free her parents and leave the forest with them together, and holds Johnny and Gyro in high regard for their ability to escape the Tree's ability.

At one point in the past, Sugar Mountain and her parents encountered the great tree. Her father had dropped an axe and managed to acquire it back from the guardian, plus a golden axe for being honest. However, Sugar Mountain's family failed in using it up before sunset and they were turned into tree fruits, slumbering for so many years Sugar Mountain lost count of the time. It is estimated that she was prisoner of the tree for about 50 years. At one point, it is Sugar Mountain's turn to be the guardian of the tree.

Ringo Roadagain is a gunslinger at the service of Funny Valentine who traps Gyro, Johnny and Hot Pants at the beginning of the 4th STAGE, near Kansas City, to seize the Saint's Corpse's parts. He is a Stand user and uses his time-rewinding Mandom to ensure fairness in duels and prevent draws.

Ringo is a man of average to above-average height and slim to average build. He has light hair passing his forehead, swept to his left; a long, thin mustache, a soul patch in the shape of a cartoonish skull, and a beard of two slim patches bordering his chin.

He wears a light cap-sleeved jacket with a tall collar, dark gloves revealing his thumbs and index fingers, and a wristwatch of a fine, modern design on his right. It's shown that his pants are lightly frilled and studded near the bottom of the legs.

As a gunman, Ringo also wields a gun with an assorted ammunition belt and holster. The gun is identified by Gyro as an 1874 Colt.

Wekapipo is an exiled Neapolitan and a practitioner of the Spin. After serving as a royal guard for the Kingdom of Naples, he entered the service of Funny Valentine, later working against him to protect Lucy and Steven Steel.

Wekapipo is most notable for his bizarre haircut, which consists of a series of shaved grid lines and squares of short hair. He enters the story sporting a mustache, which he later shaves off. He is often shown wearing a light-colored jacket and pants covered with paired overlapping polka dots. He sports pants of the same design.

Wekapipo is a remarkably stern and serious individual, focusing on whatever goal he has and tolerating little the hijinks of Magent Magent. Wekapipo would do anything to protect his sister. During his youth, Wekapipo was entirely devoted to his sister. He had gone out of his way to force a divorce after learning that her husband beat her. The news of her supposed death made him seemingly depressed and he has since then had a bleak outlook on life.

Pork Pie Hat Kid is a skinny and short young boy, hiding his bald head with bamboo sticks. He has a large, angular jawline and shows his teeth constantly. He also possesses large black irises.

Pork Pie Hat Kid wears a sleeveless suit, open and laced at the back and decorated with studs arranged vertically on both sides of the chest and both legs, as well as short feathers on the shoulder and finally a tutu-like short dress. He also wears large bracelets adorned with leaves on both wrists.

Due to his Stand Wired, Pork Pie Hat Kid's tongue has two hook-shaped cavities and the bottom of his mouth has two wheels around which the cables of Wired can roll.

Pork Pie Hat Kid appears to be a goofy and deranged individual. He seems to have little conception of normalcy and shows several disturbing habits. For instance, he has a tendency to eat and drink anything that comes into his view such as the ink of a pen (finding it delicious) or a whole coffee pot, and even wonders if he could eat his broken teeth. He is also shown hitting a bag with a rock to search it instead of opening it. Like any of Valentine's subordinates, he has little problem with using violence and killing his targets.

Despite his quirks, Pork Pie Hat Kid is still shown to be a capable tactician in a Stand fight. Aware of his primary objective of securing the Corpse Parts, he takes the time to analyze the situation and is shown to devise several plans to counter his enemy's actions, at one point using Gyro as bait after having predicted that Johnny would come to save his companion or release Slow Dancer near Johnny to weaponize the horse' instinctual will to go to its rider and then detect the hidden Johnny.

Mrs. Robinson is a well-built yet heavily androgynous Mexican man with long flowing hair that ends in spikes, and is also covered by a hood, leaving only a mohawk shape exposed over his head. He wears an open jacket that exposes his chest, which is covered in several circular designs. His sleeves and horse's gear are covered in the phrase "TRUE LOVE" and he prominently wears strings of eyeballs as pendant earrings. Parts of his body are hollowed out to breed insects inside, notably his left eye socket, which also has a large, dark eyeliner design around it.

Mrs. Robinson is an unscrupulous competitor in the Steel Ball Run.

Influenced by his village's tradition, where a dispute can degenerate into a fight and the loser is tied into a cactus and left for dead, Mrs. Robinson is a cold-blooded and deranged killer. To survive in his village, he has transformed his body into an insects nest whom he commands to win his fights, and he doesn't hesitate to try to murder competitors during the race.

Mrs. Robinson keeps several flying insects in the hollowed-out parts of his body, including his left eye socket. He ejects them out whenever he attacks someone. The insects create high speed pressure while flying, causing cholla cacti that are nearby to freely shoot their needles.

An agent to President Valentine, Axl RO attacks Hot Pants, Gyro and Johnny with his Stand in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, summoning corporeal representations of figures from their pasts in order to steal the Saint's Corpse parts. He is a Stand user, powering his Civil War with guilt.

Axl appears to be a middle-aged man of average to above-average height and medium build. Darkness (either shadow, paint or a tattoo) covers his face to just below his eyes and in mirrored, hook-like tribal marks on his cheeks; save for a scattering of dots.

Over a light, drooping rag, he wears a thick, round military helmet covered by a net. He wears a thick wide-necked top, bearing four dark rectangular patches between his shoulders and elbows on his long sleeves. His chest is overlaid with a V-shaped piece from which hang layers of squares; and he wears dark, knee-high boots.

Axl's most characteristic trait is his desire to purify himself from his sins in order to rid himself of the ghosts of his past comrades haunting him.

As Funny Valentine's henchmen, they track down Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli during the sixth stage of the Steel Ball Run to take their Saint's Corpse parts. They are all Stand users that share the same Stand, TATOO YOU!

All eleven men share similar outfits consisting of a flat brim cowboy hat, a range coat, and a belt with a holster for their gun. Most of them have a pattern featuring small writing spread all over their hair and facial hair like a newspaper or a book.

Not much is known about their personality beyond stoicism, but they have an uncanny ability to act in unison. They are also ruthless murderers, patiently hunting after Gyro and Johnny then during their fight, and exploit any setback thrown to them, using their comrades' corpses as shields and hiding spots for surprise attacks. Despite their ruthlessness, they seem to have a sense of honor, as they don't go out of their way to kill anyone but Johnny and Gyro, and the only surviving gunman left Johnny alone after acquiring the Corpse Part from him.

Magent Magent is one of Funny Valentine's henchmen. Partnered with Wekapipo, he attacks Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli during the 6th stage for the possession of the Saint's Corpse's Legs. Magent is a Stand user who wields the invulnerable 20th Century BOY.

Magent is a slender man of above-average height and dark curly hair. Outside a bolero hat, his attire generally consists of what appears to be a thick quilted stud jacket, accompanied by long sleeves, finger-less gloves, a fur collar, and a single stud-embedded cravat.

Later on, he is given a noticeable scar on the left side of his face after his bout with Johnny and Gyro.

Because his Stand is entirely defensive in nature, Magent Magent carries firearms with him. Against Johnny and Gyro, he wields a shotgun, was shown to use a pistol with a silencer for quiet assassinations, and was seen wearing an explosive belt.

Blackmore is one of Funny Valentine's henchmen. When Lucy Steel's intrusion is discovered while she investigates Valentine's schemes, Blackmore is tasked with tracking and eliminating whoever tried to spy on the President.

Blackmore is a man of average to above-average height and medium build.

He wears a black, hooded poncho, punctuated in two columns on its chest, and lining its sleeves by small metallic rings. Through the top of its hood is threaded a long ponytail of his light hair. Underneath, he wears light clothes covering his arms to his metacarpals; and his pants and boots in a piece, patterned by a symbol resembling a halved taijitu.

Blackmore is an efficient assassin, deeply loyal to Valentine; equally believing in his authority and cause.

After his vision of Jesus, Blackmore becomes exalted

Blackmore is largely depicted with a placid personality, talking slowly and being impassive to most things. However, his mission towards the corpse part excites himself greatly and he even becomes exalted when he feels the presence of Jesus Christ.

He appears in proximity to the Saint's Corpse, which represents a symbol of purity.[3] He is heavily implied to represent the biblical and much-venerated Son of God in Christianity, Jesus, and is referred to as such once by Johnny Joestar.

He has long, dark hair and a body covered in scars. He appears either clean-shaven, with a mustache, or with a light beard. In his flashback, he wears a large linen robe. His face is unseen, obscured by the shadow of his hair or his robe. In his later appearances, he wears a crown of thorns, and bears the Holy Wounds on his hands and feet (the only one not seen being his chest wound).

Jesus is solemn and direct, inspiring awe in everyone he meets as a messiah. At times, Jesus makes his presence aware to people carrying parts of the Saint's Corpse, occasionally dispensing cryptic yet useful advice.

He is President Funny Valentine's personal bodyguard. When Lucy Steel and Hot Pants infiltrate the President's residence in Chicago, he battles Hot Pants in order to protect Valentine. Mike O. is a Stand user and creates deadly metal balloons through his Tubular Bells.

Mike O. is a dark-skinned man of average to above-average height and medium build. His head is shaved save for a dark, curly patch on his crown; and centered on the edges of both eyes, extending to mid-forehead and covering his cheekbones, he has two light, swerving tattoos tapering at both ends into a spiral.

As a security officer, Mike O is highly dedicated to his job. When someone infiltrated a presidential building to intercept a message from Ringo Roadagain, Mike O. has led an exhaustive investigation on the staff and their relatives, making over 1000 detailed files. He takes his duty as a symbol of honor and has commented that finding Hot Pants in the presidential building was a breach that stained this honor. Mike O. was also very distressed when he discovered that the First Lady Scarlet Valentine had died under his watch. On the other hand, Mike O is extremely ruthless toward those that threaten the President. Wrathful about Scarlet Valentine's death, he then decided to kill both Hot Pants and Lucy Steel on the spot as an execution. Likewise, Mike O. requested that he could execute whoever stole Ringo's message.

Benjamin Boomboom is the patriarch of the Boomboom family and father of L.A. and Andre. Benjamin Boomboom is one of the racers of the Steel Ball Run and attacks Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli to eliminate competitors.

Andre is one of the competitors of the Steel Ball Run race. Alongside the rest of the Boomboom family, he tries to eliminate other jockeys to get ahead in the race and attacks Gyro Zeppeli and Johnny Joestar.

L.A. is the youngest member of the Boomboom family along with his father Benjamin and his older brother Andre. Participating in the Steel Ball Run, he attacks Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli to eliminate competitors.

A geologist by trade and also working as one of President Funny Valentine's henchmen, Dr. Ferdinand ambushes Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli alongside a transformed Diego Brando in the Rocky Mountains to take the Saint's Corpse's eyes from them. He is a Stand user and controls hordes of dinosaurs through his Scary Monsters.

Dr. Ferdinand is a man with light hair, that is parted with long bangs on the right side of his face. Most of the head is hidden under a thick hood.

His outfit's most notable feature is the several roses near the top of his long main garment, which appears to be only slightly shorter than his coat and resembles a dress or tunic. He dons a long, hooded coat, gloves, kneepads, pants, and boots.

He looks somewhat androgynous and seems to be wearing mascara - particularly below his eyes - and lipstick.

Dr. Ferdinand is a geologist and a paleontologist with a very flamboyant personality. For him, the most important thing in the world is respect; he has a great respect for the planet, to the point he'd get senselessly furious should he see somebody spitting on the ground or littering. He's convinced that Earth brings prosperity only to those who respect the soil and has come to believe that dinosaurs, the once undisputed rulers of the world, died because their small brains couldn't understand this basic ideal.

Oyecomova is a terrorist from the Kingdom of Naples who participates in the Steel Ball Run. Having heard of Gyro Zeppeli's participation, he seeks revenge on him and attacks Gyro alongside Mountain Tim and Johnny Joestar in the Rocky Mountains.

Oyecomova is a man with long, dark hair, closely resembling dread locks. His makeup is loosely based on the American flag and tattoos representing clocks cover his legs and arms. His body is covered in what he describes as his "skin", with another layer underneath appearing darker in tone.[1] The netting-like veil over Oyecomova's face is meant to act as a sun-protectant and an insect screen, which was meant to give him an advantage in the race.

Oyecomova is a fairly disturbing individual. At first, he seems to be fairly passive, from where he actually warns others not to touch him due to his Stand. However, this is apparently a front—he has shown that he has no qualms about killing others and displays fierce dedication to the missions he takes up, seen where he was ready to resume his plot to assassinate the King of Italy after killing Gyro Zeppeli. He also often claims that God's will is the cause of why he got where he was.

Dario is the father of Diego Brando and is an abusive alcoholic without regard for anyone but himself. The abandonment of his wife and son left them social outcasts in abject poverty. This set in motion a chain of events that became the impetus driving Diego's primary ambition.

Dario is a man of average height and build. His light-colored hair is shaved on the sides with a tuft in the front, and kept long in the back. In contrast to his fair hair, he sports a dark goatee and sideburns. His eyebrows are also dark and have the same prominent arch as his son's. Typical for a rural peasant, his attire consists of a simple cloak, tunic, and pants. He is also shown wearing cloth bracers on his wrists.

Dario is cruel and callous, showing no remorse for infanticide and leaving his family for dead. Although both parents had apparently made the decision together to bury their newborn baby, it can be assumed that it was mainly at Dario's insistence, based on his cruel personality and the fact that he took the most active role in the burial. Prone to flying into a rage, his abusive nature is apparent when he beats his wife for suggesting that his alcoholism is contributing to their poverty. A man void of any sense of responsibility, he sees his wife and child as nothing more than a burden, overjoyed at the prospect of getting rid of them both.

Repentant for abandoning her infant son, Diego Brando, she dives into a flooding river to save him. Until her death, she taught Diego pride and nobility.

Diego's mother is a young woman who has long dark hair, except for two locks of light hair at the front. She wears a dress and boots. Although she buried her infant son alive, Diego's mother quickly changes her mind and dedicates herself entirely to his well-being afterward. Despite living in poverty, she makes it a point to teach her son pride and seeks to keep her dignity. She makes any sacrifices to raise Diego, going as far as burning her own hands with hot soup on a daily basis for a month when they didn't have cups.

Diego's mother lived in an impoverished region on the island of Britain with her husband, Dario. At some point in time, they had Diego, but felt forced to dispose of him due to their poverty-stricken lives. In the cover of night, the two went up into the mountains and dug a hole with the intent of burying the child. After wrapping the infant Diego in a white cloth, they placed him in the hole and left, having buried him alive. Soon after, a storm occurred and the water in the river increased and started to flood. The flood caused some type of erosion, and the baby was submerged from the ground and forced downstream. Diego's mother had a change of heart and bravely dove into the river after her baby, even after Dario hit her for "scorning her husband". 

Captain Valentine appears briefly with a large scar on the right side of his face, short dark hair and stubble. He dons a dark uniform and a feathered hat that he takes off before informing Funny on his father's death.

Valentine was close friends with Funny's father, and held onto his handkerchief until he could pass it down to his son, in reverence to his sacrifice. He considers patriotism to be the most beautiful virtue in the world, instilling it in Funny as a child and serving as a captain of the army's cavalry.

Captain Valentine is introduced to a seven-year-old Funny by his mother, and divulges that he was a friend of his late father. Valentine then tells the story of his sacrifice and patriotism. Funny’s father was captured during fighting and subsequently routinely tortured to reveal information. He would never waver in-spite of the pain because of the handkerchief stuffed inside his gouged out eye, which reminded him of his family and country. The monologue ends with Valentine handing over that handkerchief to Funny who would keep it ever since as a memento. He is last seen embracing Funny's crying mother.

Gregorio is Gyro's father and an executioner of the Kingdom of Naples.

Gregorio Zeppeli is a mature Italian man, his face being noticeably wrinkled with a constantly serious and severe look to him. His most distinctive feature is his facial hair, consisting of a soul patch covering the space from the lips to the chin, and two symmetrical zigzagging stripes of hair along the cheeks connecting to the hair. Although Gregorio Zeppeli keeps short hair cut into a flattop, he has a ponytail too. The design of the beard changed during his life.

Gregorio is shown in different outfits. The first time he was clothed in a dark jacket and pants. He also adorned the executioner outfit of his country, and was also featured having a typical surgeon's outfit.

Gregorio Zeppeli is a somber and serious man, whose loyalty lies in his king and his family.
