Flickering Stars Wave One Casting (Main Characters and Major Supporting)
Project Overview
Flickering Stars is an upcoming two-dimensional animated webseries featuring magical cats who live in the woods. These cats are sorted into four divisions based off of their magic’s elemental affinity. There are the Flame Sprinters that do fire magic, the Splash Hunters that do water magic, the Wind Chasers that do wind magic, and the Earth Stalkers that do earth magic. There is also a fifth division called the Star Path Travelers, who learn to heal cats and read the stars. If a Star Path Traveler is chosen, they could become the next Star Reader, who is the overall leader of the divisions.
This is wave one of the casting calls for this series. I will be looking for the main characters, the major supporting characters, and some of the crew. The series itself is not divided up into seasons, and each episode will progress the story further. I do not have plans for slice-of-life episodes. The overall series is rated PG.
The deadline is a couple years into the future so that I have time to finish up some of my current projects and write episodes for this one so work on production can be done immediately after getting a full cast.
I will be a core animator for this series, but I will call for more animators later on in the casting process.
|| What do I ask of you? ||
- Have fun! This is supposed to be an enjoyable experience, after all.
- Be willing and able to stick to this project long-term. Animated series take a long time to make, and it will definitely help to have voice actors and crew who will stay.
- If you’re on the team, you will have access to spoilers for the story. Please don’t spoil stuff for the people who don’t have such access.
- You do not need discord. As long as you check your project chats and notifications, you’ll be able to communicate with the rest of the team.

Hello! So, on the casting call for supporting characters, I accidentally made the deadline for auditions way earlier than this one. And honestly, since this project isn’t even listed in the Open Projects section of this website, I think I’m going to have to cast a bit earlier. I’m moving the deadline to July 12th. If you know anyone who would be interested in auditioning for some of the roles that haven’t been auditioned for yet, please let them know about it. I’ll include the invite link in a comment so they have access to it. I am sorry for the change in plans, but I look forward to working with you!
- A Lead Character
- Wind Chaser, Whisker (Trainee)
- Best Friends are Poppy’s Shine and Hopping Rabbit. Has a crush on Stepping Coyote.
- Abnormally short legs (Munchkin Cat) and was teased for it. She is defensive about her height, and has grown fierce enough to frighten most away from talking about it. She is goofy and friendly around her friends, though. Feather’s Fall wants to be either the Head Mage or one of the Shoulder Mages one day, and hopes that Stepping Coyote will come along with her. Her dreams of the future can lead her to being blind to other potential outcomes and to the present. She will have to learn that sometimes things don’t work out quite the way she plans, and to remember that other cats have feelings, too
- Voice Pitch: Medium-High to High pitched.
(Laughing/Happy) Ha! Good one, Stepping Coyote!
(Sobbing) Oh, Poppy’s Shine. I just got rejected and... and... I’m sorry, I need a second.
(Angry) Wait... This is why you don’t like me? You’d rather break the law than be my love?
- A Lead Character
- An Earth Stalker, Whisker (trainee)
- Best Friend is Feather’s Fall. She and Stepping Coyote are in love, and Feather’s Fall doesn’t know. This is mostly because Poppy’s Shine and Stepping Coyote are in opposite divisions (Wind and Earth) and there’s a superstition within the divisions that cats with opposite elements cannot be together. Poppy’s Shine is rather quiet about her own life (for there were many struggles in her childhood) which lends to her charm. Despite the scars from her past, Poppy’s Shine is outgoing and unafraid of meeting other cats. She is one of the few cats who sees past Stepping Coyote’s mischievous and silly antics to the vulnerable and sweet cat inside. Poppy’s Shine has a tendency to keep secrets if she has the feeling someone doesn’t want to hear things. She will have to learn to trust her friends with her struggles.
- Voice Pitch: Middle to middle-high. She’s not quiet, but her voice has a gentleness to it.
(Nervous, awkwardly trying to be comforting) Oh, Feather’s Fall... that’s... terrible. I- I... Um...
(Loving, to Stepping Coyote) I’ll be alright. See you soon, Step.
(Frightened/Angry) F-Feather’s Fall it’s love! You c-can’t just- just- you can’t assume it’ll stay within the guidelines of the Elemental Divsions!
- A Lead Character, later an antagonist
- A Star Path Traveler, Whisker (Trainee)
- Best Friend is Song of Shadow. She has feelings for Frosted Stag, and he openly loves her back. As a kitten, Mouse was always calm and thoughtful, with a strong connection to the stars. When she was told that she had multiple elemental affinities and was invited to join the Star Path, she decided that her destiny was to be the next Star Reader, taking the name Mouse’s Moon to match the current reader, Moon’s Rise. However, she soon realized that her childhood friend, Frosted Stag was in love with her... and she was a little frightened to realize that she has feelings for him, too. Mouse’s Moon has to choose between ambition and love, as well as deal with the effects of a Flickering Star on top of everything.
- Voice Pitch: Middle-deep to deep, but still feminine and believably teenage. I imagine Mouse’s Moon having a sort of young Lord of the Rings Elf Queen-like voice. If not that, then something mystical-sounding.
(Encouraging) Of course you will. You can heal anything, Song of Shadow, and Briar of Clouds is no exception.
(Quietly, awkwardly) Frosted Stag... I don’t want to hurt you, but I really want to be the Star Reader. And the Star Reader can’t have a family, so...
(In pain/madness) Just STOP! I am your leader, so I decide when those kittens are trained. If that’s later than you prefer, please set up a formal appointment.
- A Major Supporting Character
- A Wind Chaser, Whisker
- Best Friends are Frosted Stag and Briar of Clouds. In love with Poppy’s Shine. Stepping Coyote is a fun-loving and mischievous tom, who is always down for a game. However, deep down he is still hurting from the death of his littermates and mother. The only cat who sees through to this hurt is Poppy’s Shine. Stepping Coyote and Poppy’s Shine have been in love since they became Whiskers, but Poppy’s Shine was sorted into the Earth Stalkers and Stepping Coyote was sorted into the Wind Chasers, and now they can’t be mates due to the superstition about their magics being incompatible. Despite this, Stepping Coyote is determined to keep Poppy’s Shine in his life. Stepping Coyote can be really bad at saying the right thing.
- Voice Pitch: Middle to middle-high teenage male. I imagine him sounding like a sort of surfer-dude or like the typical class clown. Or similar to Sora from Kingdom Hearts 2.
(Calming) Hey, don’t worry. I can keep a secret. You can tell me all about it.
(Joking) Ah, yes, the smfurbfurpfurbur. That’s my favorite morning activity! Better wake up so we can start!
(Angry) Gosh, Feather’s Fall. I thought you were more understanding than that. I guess I was wrong.
- A Lead Character
- Splash Hunter, Whisker
- Best Friends are Hopping Rabbit, Mouse’s Moon, Sneezing Hare, Stepping Coyote, and Swimming Claws. He is head over heels for Mouse’s Moon. Frosted Stag hopes that when he and Mouse’s Moon earn their titles, they’ll be mates. However, when Mouse’s Moon told him that she wanted to be the next Star Reader, who could not have a mate or kittens, Frosted Stag was more than a little upset. Couldn’t any of the other Star Path Travelers become the Star Reader? Why does it have to be her? The two got into a fight, which left Mouse’s Moon storming away. As she left and Frosted Stag wound down, he regretted everything that he said. But he couldn’t just apologize now, since Mouse’s Moon would still be bitter. It has been a few months since Mouse’s Moon has come to visit, and since then, Frosted Stag has been hanging out with Hopping Rabbit, Sneezing Hare, Stepping Coyote, and Swimming Claws to get his mind off of things. Frosted Stag will need to learn to control his temper and impulses over the course of the show
- Voice Pitch: Middle-Deep to Deep, while still remaining believably teenage. I don’t think I have an example for this one.
(Angry) Literally anyone else could read the stars and lead! But I could only love one cat, and that’s you!
(Sheepish) I- yeah... I said some things that I regret. I’m sorry.
(Concerned) Mouse’s Moon? Are you... are you alright?
- A Lead Character
- Flame Sprinter, Whisker
- Best Friends are Feather’s Fall and Frosted Stag. His brother is Sneezing Hare. As a kitten, Rabbit was named for his very large ears. Like Feather, he was teased for these odd proportions. Rabbit actually met Poppy first and became friends with her. When Poppy defended Feather from teasing, she took the small she-cat to meet Rabbit and join the friend group. Rabbit and Feather became friends quickly, due to shared experience being teased. This friendship grew even stronger when Rabbit got into an accident that cost him his tail. Left with a fluffy stump on his rump, Rabbit found himself resembling his namesake even more. Feather still treated him the same, though. She even helped him learn how to balance better after the accident. As Rabbit and Feather became Whiskers, taking the names Hopping Rabbit and Feather’s Fall, they were sorted into different divisions. Hopping Rabbit felt the separation immediately, even though there were no borders between the two of them. The Flame Sprinter training was rigorous and kept him away from his friends. Perhaps that was why Feather’s Fall seemed to be drifting away from Hopping Rabbit and toward Stepping Coyote (A tom who was clearly more interested in Poppy’s Shine). As Feather’s Fall started spending more time among the Wind Chasers, Hopping Rabbit knew he was being left behind. He started sticking around his brother, Sneezing Hare, and his new friend, Frosted Stag during the brief downtime training left him. The two were pleasant to be around, but they didn’t give him the easy confidence that Feather’s Fall did. Over the course of the show, Hopping Rabbit will have to find both confidence in himself and the courage to become a real hero
- Voice Pitch: Middle-high to high, while still remaining believably teenage. Hopping Rabbit probably has a bit of a stutter.
(Quietly) Oh... no. I don’t think... Yeah, she has probably forgotten all about me.
(Awkwardly) H-hey, Feather’s Fall? Do- do you want to h-hang out? Like we used t-to? As- as friends?
(Frightened, yet determined) W-well, if it r-really c-could help then... I’m in!
- Major Supporting Character
- Star Path Traveler, Whisker
- Best Friend is Mouse’s Moon. Sister is Briar of Clouds and brother is Swimming Claws. Song of Shadow’s kitten name was Squeak, for being the loudest of her littermates. Her sister’s name was Briar, and her brother’s name was Claws. Squeak and Briar were as close as two sisters could be. So when Briar gained a snake bite that left her leg paralyzed after healing, Squeak was devastated. The Star Path Travelers at the time said that if their magic left Briar paralyzed, then Briar was destined to be paralyzed by the Stars’ Intent. Squeak thought that that was utterly illogical, but she didn’t say anything. Later, Squeak began to regret not questioning the Travelers. When she and her siblings became Whiskers, Squeak chose to go down the Star Path, taking the name Song of Shadow. Shadows were silent, just as she had been when Briar was left paralyzed, and the part Song meant that she wasn’t going to be silent any longer. Song of Shadow is determined to heal Briar (now known as Briar of Clouds) completely, and with her friend Mouse’s Moon by her side, maybe she has a chance.
- Voice Pitch: Middle, Middle Deep, or Middle High. Song of Shadow speaks strongly, in a way that gives the impression that she means what she says.
(Annoyed) What? Why is there a restricted section in the records? All I’m looking for is a cure for my sister!
(Determined) I will heal her. Mark my words. And then all the ones who didn’t will feel foolish.
(Proud) Why, thank you. But it was really Mouse’s Moon’s idea. I just helped.
