Character: Griffin
Lines: 170
Role: Lead Male
Age: 13
Description: Griffin is a brave and loyal young man, committed to protecting his country against forces such as The Lord of the Night. After witnessing the destruction of his regiment, Griffin struggles between a possible family life and loyalty to his country. He is a caring, optimistic, determined boy with an intense guilt of being the sole survivor of his regiment. His character arc sees him evolve from a lonely orphan boy to a young man, curious about his destiny and grappling with his grief and desire for family. Auditionees should be able to portray a medium range of emotions, from innocence and grief to joy and affection.
I don’t mind. The truth is that it’s sort of nice being here. I grew up as an orphan, so I never really had a place like this to call home. I guess that’s why I snuck into the army. But in the end my entire division fell to the one they call The Lord of the Night.
You have nothing to be sorry for. You’ve been nothing but kind by saving my life and letting me stay. And actually, I was thinking… well- maybe I could stay a little bit longer. You’re stubborn, impassive, and a hoarder. But I find it quite pleasant here with you. If I’m not a burden.
It’s you. The one they call The Lord of the Night. The one who spared me that day on the battlefield. Why did you spare me? What is my part to play in this prophecy? I could never want the destruction of Elkaria. I’m just an orphan boy. I’m no one.
Character: Luan
Lines: 105
Role: Supporting Male
Age: 18
Description: Luan is a hardened, complex figure burdened by the death of his father and the injustices he's suffered from Callais, Rain, and previous Elkarian rulers. After sparing Griffin's life, Luan, determined to destroy Elkaria, manipulates the other characters to do his bidding. When wearing his mask, he carries a cold, calculating demeanor, however, without his mask, a different Luan shows through, more soft-spoken and gentle. His character arc sees him evolve from a young man capable of redemption to a hard-hearted tragic villain. Auditionees should be able to portray a wide range of emotions, from a brooding exterior with moment of internal conflict to moments of true cruelty and brutality.
My father was a sailor. I find comfort in the water. Like he’s still part of the sea. And I often wonder if he would’ve hated me for killing my mother. You don’t have to apologize. I only wanted you to understand… One day you will understand.
I speak no lies. I’ve no need to. Don’t you see I’ve already won? How long I’ve waited for this moment, and now it’s finally within my reach. You came here intending to ally the Latopian army against me, when, in reality, this is what I planned from the start. I want this alliance. Once that treaty is signed, Elkaria is mine!
There was a time when I feared you. In your youth you were a ruthless, merciless king. Now look at you… tired and old, bowing your head to the very villain you created, begging him to spare your children. You showed me no mercy, Callais. Elkaria showed my father no mercy. So, take it like a man.
Character: Rain
Lines: 113
Role: Supporting Male
Age: Centuries old (appears 15)
Description: Rain is a stoic and impassive elf, living alone in the forest until Griffin's arrival. The last of the elves, Rain has lived a long life of solitude and seclusion so as not to be discovered by the humans. He has a sharp, intelligent attitude and a calm, detached demeanor. Beneath this cool exterior, however, is a deep wisdom and desire for companionship. He does not change over the course of his character arc, but it does reveal more about his nature as the story goes on, starting from an unfeeling "old-man" to a man experiencing (platonic) love for the first time. Auditionees should be able to portray dialogue with multiple layers and express suppressed and subtle emotions.
I’m not. I’m not… human. I’m too old to remember my age. Elves tend to forget even their parents and families after too long.
We’ve lived this day more times than I can count… Don’t you remember? I forget you’re living it for the first time. In a way I am too. Feeling it for the first time. I never thought I’d be capable of… love.
Watch your tone, boy. It is only because of me that you are alive. I’m your elder. Don’t disrespect me because I appear young.
Character: Ellianna
Lines: 62
Role: Supporting Female
Age: 12
Description: Ellianna is the young, spirited, and charismatic princess of Elkaria, a key political figure in the Elkarian court as the only woman. Despite her innocent nature and flirtatious demeanor, she is sharp, cunning, and perceptive. She balances a playful teasing nature with moments of strategy, affection, and worry. Auditionees should be able to portray a blend of lighthearted humor and dignified confidence, capturing her ability to gain all the attention when she enters a room. A strong sense of timing for comedic and flirtatious moments is important.
Forgive my tardiness, my lord, I spent a little too long picking the right dress to greet you in. Do you like it?
Yes, you’ve killed thousands. But the heart of one who reaches to get a book I couldn’t reach isn’t the cold-blooded heart of a man beyond redemption.
Character: Callais
Lines: 39
Role: Supporting Male
Age: 70
Description: Callais, King of Elkaria, is a commanding and regretful presence, embodying authority and command. After losing the use of his legs in an attack from The Lord of the Night years ago, Callais fears the second coming of Luan and the destruction of Elkaria. While resolute and serious, Callais also shows signs of fatigue and weariness that comes with age. His character arc sees him become less and less powerful over the course of the story as Luan holds more and more power over him, manipulating him through his past actions and love for his family. Auditionees should be able to convey a regal, imposing demeanor and be capable of giving a glimpse into a younger Callais, once menacing and brutal.
I’ve done things in my past, dear one, that I am not proud of. But everything I’ve ever done, I’ve done for Elkaria. The Lord of the Night… yes, I knew him long ago, when I was just a boy of sixteen. His name was Luan then. He did not know the power he held. And now he’s come to enact his revenge on me; a revenge that is justified.
So the time has finally come for you to fulfill your promise to me?Do what you must to me, Luan. I am your enemy. But my children… my grandchildren… spare them.
Character: Fate
Lines: 6
Role: Minor Male (First Scene Death)
Age: 18
Description: Fate is one of the Elkarian soldiers in Griffin's regiment who dies at the hands of The Lord of the Night. Fate is calm and caring towards Griffin in this scene. Appearance is brief but impactful, setting the tone for Luan's ruthlessness and creating a tragic beginning to Griffin's story.
Griffin, you have to go. Take this crystal. Take it! Let it bring you peace.
Character: Annette
Lines: 18
Role: Supporting Male
Age: 25-30
Description: Annette is the self-interested King of the Fairies, indifferent to the struggles of Elkaria and the humans. After meeting Ellianna, however, Annette connects with the memory of his dead sister (previous queen) who had a heart for the humans. Through her only does he find the generosity to make an alliance with them. Auditionees should be able to portray a haughty royal but with some layers as it pertains to his political decisions.
What could we possibly gain from allying with humans? You are so weak and your life spans so short. In only a few short years, you yourself will be dead and I will be talking with your sons and grandsons. How tedious to start over so many times.
My sister always spoke of peace with the humans, talking of them like they were the same as us. I’m only starting to realize the things she knew from the start. Her memory softens my heart, you see… I begin to see that you and I are not so different, Princess Ellianna.
Character: Dante
Lines: 6
Role: Minor Male
Age: early 20s
Description: Dante is Prince of Elkaria and Ellianna's older brother. He is skeptical of The Lord of the Night and an important voice on the Elkarian court.
Pay her no mind, she’s only a child.
Thank you, sister, for making his lordship see reason.
Character: Zarine
Lines: 11
Role: Supporting Male
Age: 40s
Description: Zarine is second hand man to the King of the Fairies. He has a serious and dedicated exterior. However, he opens up to Annette about the previous queen, whom he was personal knight to. Zarine prompts Annette's alliance with Elkaria by reminding him of his sister's caring nature towards the humans during her time as queen.
I believe it’s time, Annette. For so long we’ve fought against the Elkarians. What have they really done to deserve our wrath?
Character: Klein
Lines: 7
Role: Minor Male
Age: 40s
Description: Klein is Prince of Elkaria and Ellianna's uncle. He is an important voice on the Elkarian court, having knowledge about history and the prophecy.
The Blue King’s reign will be short and fruitless. After his death, Elkaria will inevitably fall. Our people will die of poverty, be sold into slavery, or forced to flee.
Character: Pascal
Lines: 5
Role: Minor Male
Age: 40s
Description: Pascal is Prince of Elkaria and Ellianna's uncle. He is an important voice on the Elkarian court with a strong dislike for The Lord of the Night.
It’s only a prophecy, father. That doesn’t make it fact. We could seek a peace treaty with Latopia. We’ve been discussing it for many years now, your majesty.
Character: Orion
Lines: 4
Role: Minor Male
Age: mid 20s
Description: Orion is Prince of Elkaria and Ellianna's cousin. He is an important voice on the Elkarian court with a strong dislike for The Lord of the Night.
The eye of time is guarded safely in Avilior.
Character: Archer
Lines: 9
Role: Minor Male
Age: early 30s
Description: Archer is the prince of a neighboring kingdom, betrothed to Ellianna. He is narcissistic and vain, caring little for Ellianna. He breaks off the engagement quickly after Luan threatens him.
You’re very lucky, my dear. So many women hoped to make a match with me. You’ll come to love me in time.
Character: Willow
Lines: 4 (One Scene)
Role: Minor Female
Age: 16
Description: Willow is Ellianna's personal servant. She should be caring towards Ellianna and worried for her safety when it comes to The Lord of the Night.
The Lord of the Night? Aren’t you frightened, your highness? He’s said to have slain hundreds. You really should stay out of these affairs, Princess. For your own safety.
Character: Medic
Lines: 1
Role: Extra (male or female)
Age: Any
Description: The medic takes Archer from the palace after Luan badly injures his leg.
I think the leg is going to have to come off, Prince Archer. It’s already badly infected.
