Dorothy Do and the Deep Blue
Project Overview
We are looking for submissions to be in a MP3 format and for you to provide three takes per line!
This project is part of a larger horror ARG centered around the archiving and preservation of creative media! Among the many cartoons, books, and comics catalogued on the archive is the history of the Dorothy Do show!
Created in the forties by Barbara Massey this show started off as a well regarded series of books centering around the eponymous Dorothy Do, a sailor who sailed the great blue seas with a cast of peculiar characters at his side!
We are looking for your help bringing the costars and side characters of this fictional puppet show to life! As with everything on the archive this is unpaid work for a volunteer based project!
You would be reading small sections of storybook pages, providing small audio samples presented as ‘extracted audio’ from fake episodes and possibly more! You would not be voice acting for a live puppet show.
You can learn more about our project here!

- The Cook is a boisterous but air headed woman, a little clueless but extremely passionate about her cooking. She can always make something delicious no matter how odd or limited her supplies, often trying bold, new flavours and ingredients to surprise her crewmates. She puts 100% into everything she does even if she’s not entirely sure what she’s doing. Her goal is to make healthy and tasty meals everyone can enjoy, there's as many adventures to be had in cooking as there are on the seven seas!
-loves learning about the foods from other cultures and places. To her there is no such thing as ‘gross’ food. People who sneer or act repulsed at the food/animals consumed in other cultures usually end up bloody on the other end of her fists

“You know what's scarier than sea monsters? Malnutrition. Now eat those greens sailor!” (Said gruffly and in a chastising manner)
“Voila, my newest creation! Octopus souffle salad! …What's with those faces? At least try it before you decide you don’t like it!” (Said enthusiastically and then confused)

Captain Red Beard from scooby-doo: https://youtu.be/0D2TMmrVyo8?t=83
Captain Littaker is a gruff, weathered sailor who's been sailing the seas longer than anyone can remember. His gravelly voice and large stature makes him come off somewhat intimidating, although he doesn’t mean to. He often imparts his wisdom unto sailors in a way that seems confusing or irrelevant at first, but later its meaning becomes crystal clear.

“Aye, that reminds me of a story. Did I ever tell ye about the time I almost became a pirate? Through accident, of course.”
“When you’ve been on the sea for as long as I have, the adventures and excitement starts to become par for the course. All ye want to do is sit down and watch the water as it dances.”
“I know this ship from stem to stern like the back of my hand. She and I have been through many a-storm together, you can’t get anything past me on this ship lad.”

The Historian is a very nervous man that gets easily overwhelmed by his own words and the scope of history. He is often muttering to himself or stumbling over his words while trying to engage his crewmates in a history lesson. His ramblings tend to lead into one another, and he can go from talking about a history battle to a famed author to a lost treasure in a matter of seconds.

“History is always happening my boy, every second of every day of every year! Why this conversation itself could soon be history!”
“Oh dear, oh dear… what a fool I was to organize my library in such a way. It must be redone at once, there's not a moment to spare!”
We all become history some day, some things just rise higher above the waves while others sink below (said like he’s lecturing someone to warn them)

Grandmama from the og Addams Family: https://youtu.be/9WU4a72IZCI?t=23
A puppet that never got a chance. Her original episode was deemed so scary that she never returned in the show. Captain Cadaver is menacing, like a golden age Disney villain. She is theatrical, over-the-top but deadly and dangerous. She is the red sky in the morning, the whistled song in the wind. She speaks as though she enjoys causing fear, drawing out the hunt for her own amusement. She sounds like an old crone.

“There’s nowhere to run now. It's just you and me, and the endless deep blue below. Tell me, how long can you tread water?”
“I’m going to take this hook and carve you to bloody chunks! you talk of sailors and whimsy and ocean faring fun but I’m the REAL ocean I am the true waves and life at the sails””

Map Keeper is a warm yet stern woman, like a teacher. She does not tolerate misbehaviour, but if you are polite and eager to learn she is more than happy to teach you how to read maps and set course for fun adventures. She speaks with poise and clarity.

“Oh dorothy you are always welcome to stop by and ask for advice, you’ve always taken such good care of my maps (said warmly) …unlike that hang glider…” (said with resentment)

The hang glider is a man who never seems fully aware of his situation. He often seems bored, his voice sounding half awake and disinterested in whatever's happening around him. No matter how many breathtaking sunrises he sees or interesting people he meets, his demeanour is always the same. Representative of bored irreverent tourists. Usually crashes into the islands Dorothy visits and acts as a disruptive force of disinterested self vanity.

Brightfin is a very calm sea monster. He is otherworldly and mysterious but not scary or mean. He doesn’t mind helping lost sailors with directions, or lifting their ship over some potentially dangerous rocks.

“Oh if it isn’t my favorite sailor Dorothy Do, it’s been centuries since I’ve seen you! Or has it been months? The time tends to pass by when you have scales as old as mine ”

Sea Biscuit is a whimsical and carefree seal who spends his days with his best friend Dorothy Do. Most of the time he is very playful and always eager to help, but he can be fierce when he needs to be. He was found as a pup by Dorothy and raised with so much affection that he quickly grew above the typical size of a seal.

“Ohhhh we’re really in the murk of it now…biscuit you dunce!”
“Dorothy!” (Said gleefully like he just saw Dorothy)

This role is reserved for Black actors ONLY. Must be able to follow the costume guidelines to closely resemble the linked art https://bsky.app/profile/withkindereyes.bsky.social/post/3ldofga6isc2whowever this doesn’t have to be 1:1 accurate. Mr grey was the main narrator/framing device for the episodes of the Dorothy do show, a lighthouse keeper he would start each episode from his lighthouse musing on places in the world and wondering where his sailor friend (the protagonist Dorothy) is on this day. The camera would then zoom out of the lighthouse to focus on Dorothies boat on the ocean. Mr grey would always keep the lighthouse running and as such was the most important character in this world—being a constant source of safety and an anchor for those who lost themselves at sea. Of the characters in the show he stood out for being the only human actor among the puppet actors.
