Death Vigil Comic Dub

Project Overview

Death Vigil is an 8 issue graphic novel series, the creation of artist/writer Stjepan Sejic. I completely fell in love with the amazing artwork, incredible characters and most intriguing story, and want to translate that admiration/adoration into a comic dub of the entire series.  I am hoping to find some talented voice actors to help me achieve this.

What is the Vigil?  A group of immortals handpicked by Bernadette, the Reaper (who, although she does have her more sombre moments is not exactly grim) and resurrected to protect this reality from a whole horde of nasty primordial evil entities and their all too human minions. The Vigil are an extremely eclectic and interesting bunch, and Clara is about to become their newest member. The circumstances of her "induction" into the Vigil are also the beginning of the Vigil's greatest challenge to date, a battle for a prize they never suspected, spearheaded by a desperate and determined woman who has nothing left to lose and a daughter to regain if she succeeds in her coldly calculated plan to destroy them.

As I said, I plan to do the entire eight issue series (there is no more, and not likely to be, alas), vids to be posted to youtube. I am hoping to have the project completed before the end of the year, but that will depend on how successful I am in finding the right voices, etc, etc.

This casting call has a deadline which will be extended as and if necessary, as I will be adding more characters as the series progresses.  There are some major characters that do not appear until issue 2 or 3. And even later.  We will get to them in due time.  I'll focus on the ones I need for issue 1 for the moment.

There are a LOT of female characters in this series, all but a couple of the major ones are female. So ladies, this is definitely your time to shine!

As far as the actual audition is concerned, the usual disclaimers apply. I'm looking for the best possible audio quality, so auditions that are noise-free, clear and edited of any extraneous sounds or interruptions  will definitely get consideration over others who are not.  I'm looking for acting ability as well, so don't be afraid to show me what you can do.  If you are doing multiple takes (encouraged) please do a different read for each take.  Alter your inflection, put the emphasis on a different word, change it up somehow.  There's not a lot of point in saying the line three or four times the same way.

And for an intro to the Vigil as well as a preview of what the finished product is going to look, sound like, check out the video.   https://youtu.be/Zv4TAgg73dA

So, thank your for checking this out and hopefully we will be hearing from you soon!

  • That's Not All, Folks!

First, I want to thank each and everyone of you incredibly talented people who'd auditioned for me. I have cast all the posted roles - and you didn't make it easy for me. But, those aren't all the roles available. So if you didn't get a part this round don't despair, you still got a shot. I figure there is more than enough talent here to draw from, and more a couple guest necromancers, demon lords and primordials who still need voices. You'll be hearing from me..... heheheheheh
  • More Video!

I keep forgetting to post this. I finished to first nine minutes of the vid as much as I can do without a Clara or Jon. I need a Clara!!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDo3Q3tLMfg
  • New Characters Added!

Two new Issue 2 characters added. More to come!

This is a major role.  Sam is the narrator, but the story is focused around Clara and her journey to become part of the Vigil.
We don't know a lot about Clara, except she is a loner and estranged from her family. She also possesses "the gift",  A talent for magic that not only makes her eligible to become a member of the Vigil, but also makes her a target and pawn of the necromancer romancing her in order to gain her trust. She is an ordinary young woman about to become a part of something she could never even have imagined. I see her as in her 20s, kind of reserved (although she gets over that very quickly.) It takes a lot to earn her trust.  She's a bit rough around the edges.  She should sound young but not naive.  She's had a less than happy life so far.  Whoever takes her on should be prepared to do a fair bit of screaming in the first issue.  heh.  I hadn't really thought she would have an accent but we really don't find out where she is from so... I'm open.  Clara also isn't everything she appears to be.  But that would be telling...

  • *By the way... at what point do I actually get those flowers?
    Of course I'll go, Jon.
My love? Wow!  Heh... that will take some getting used to!

  • I can't pretend to know how you feel.  I'm barely on speaking terms with my own family.
But, why is it on your father's grave?
Jon, you're freaking me out here!

  • Oh god, oh god, this is real!  (fear/hysteria, she has just met the Reaper)
THIS IS NOT A  FUCKING JOKE! (having a little trouble coping with the new reality)
You scum gargling, crap chewing SON OF A BITCH!  (choice words for the ex boyfriend).
Optional, but appreciated.  Have a go at some terrified screaming and sobbing.  thanks!

I'm not sure we ever find out his last name.  Jon is in his late 20s, I would say, and seems initially to be Clara's ardent suitor. At first appearances a sensitive young man, grieving for his lost father and utterly smitten by Clara. He is overjoyed when he finally gets an emotional commitment out of her over dinner, and to celebrate they go to the graveyard to put some flowers on his  father's grave.  This is where Jon shows his true colours.  And none of them mean well for Clara.  Turns out he is a necromancer, a human allied with the dark powers the Vigil is fighting, and endowed by their evil allies with certain magical abilities controlled through intricate tattoos.  Jon has plans for Clara, he has romanced her under false pretenses to get her to this graveyard on this night to kill her and use her "gift" to open a tear in the veil between the realities to get his father back.  Sam will have something to say about that. Needless to say, Jon is not a nice dude. He starts out sounding very "sensitive" and caring, middle section he's the over the top bad magician and the last section, he's defeated and "sealed" - that is to say his powers are taken away, which kind of leaves him sort of lobotomized.  He is a recurring character, he will  be in a couple more issues, His parts in later issues aren't huge, but are very important.

  • Sorry, my mind is in kind of a dark place.  Yes, please go with me.  Very well, my love, let's go.
Just... this is the one place I know my dad is gone.  Anywhere else...  I can pretend that he is just... you know.... away.
I do love you, Clara.  Strangely, that was never a part of our plan. Still, it changes nothing.  This is bigger than both of us.

  • Clara, I wish it could have gone differently. But you are one of the gifted.  Like me, you can break the veil. And I need you to do that now.
Do it, damn you!  I have broken your body and heart!  Release your hatred!
Now come for me, Vigil!  I know you are close!  Face me!  Face us!

  • Kill him and get me his veil ripper.
This is where it ends, Digger!
The Reaper!  You took my father you bit....   Ugh!!!
What's happening?  I feel... like I'm... eroding.  What did you do to me?

Hugin is an Elder of the Vigil, older than dirt, taking the form of a talking albino crow.  Who can also morph into and albino T-Rex, all the better for munching on banshees and the like. As one of the Vigil he is an important character, however, he doesn't say a lot, hence me designating him as a minor character. When he does speak he has a dry sense of humour and hates any and all references to Edgar Allen Poe and the Raven with a passion. Voice-wise, I am torn between the talking dog on Family Guy, or something more raspy and crow-like.  Or something completely cool and original.  Surprise me.

  • Gladly! Been awhile since I feasted on some Banshee!

  • You should have seen when she brought back James. She ended up chasing him for 12 city blocks.

  • We  are  the Death Vigil, girl.  Safe-keepers of all life.
Bird has a name.  I am Hugin, Elder of the Vigil.  (Hugin as in "Hug")

Maria is the chief antagonist of the series.  She is a gifted scholar who is translating some lost, forbidden texts ostensibly for the Primordials to enable them to cross over to this reality, but she actually has her own agenda. She is a mother who has lost her only child to a terrible accident.   Her daughter is in a coma and Maria will do anything and everything, sacrifice anyone or anything to achieve her objective, which is, she believes, the return of her daughter to the land of the living.  She is desperate, totally driven, and the only other person she trusts, who is on her side is Wulf.  I see her as mid thirties, with the name Benes possible a Latino accent, but not absolutely necessary.  I'm more about what the actor can bring to the part. She must be capable of both great love (for Wulf and her daughter) and great coldness and ruthlessness. She's pretty fearless too.  She's also going to go a bit whacko at the end.  So, yeah, a bit of acting challenge.  Again, this is a really important role.  Not too much in the first issue, but the part gets bigger and bigger as the series progresses.

  • You are persistent. I will give you that.  But as I said, you can't fool my eyes.  I can see her.  And I can hear her.

  • You know, it's kind of funny.  All these centuries, you still know so little.  Tell me, Bernadette, who are the gifted?  What is the scythe's true purpose?  Do you even remember how you got it?

  • So you remember my name?  Now for the bonus question, what's my daughter's name?
Now, now, don't sell yourself short like that.  You are not stupid.  Heartless, certainly, but not dumb.

Wulf is a former Elder member of the Vigil who fell in love with Maria and left because of what happened with Alicia, her daughter. The Vigil have no idea he is actively allied with her and plotting their downfall. He later reveals himself as Beowulf.  He kinda talks like that as well.  So, we're talking ageless macho archetype who's been giving domesticity a whirl.  He is very devoted to Maria and Alicia, considers himself Maria's husband and Alicia's father. He is as ruthless and determined to do anything and everything necessary to protect his family.  I'm thinking he probably has a bit of a Germanic accent, definitely "declaims" more than talks.  So the delivery is definitely over the top old Viking hero.  But also a very, very dangerous character.

  • Jon failed.  He was sealed.  I told him he was in over his head, but he refused my assistance.

  • Hello Sam.  Hello everyone.  Goodbye everyone.
You know me as the Reaper's executioner. For 15 hundred years I was loyal to her.  But she abandoned me just like she abandoned you.

  • I will drink deep of the darkness.  I Beowulf, destroyer of monsters!  I will become one.

Role assigned to: Olivia Steele

Introduced in Issue 2. Marlene is one of the "junior" members of the Vigil, that is to say, although it is never specifically stated I believe she and James, like Sam, are not "Ancients". They've joined the vigil within the last hundred years or so.  Maybe sooner.  Although there is a definite "steampunk" influence to Marlene's attire that could mean she has been around a little longer than the others.  Giving how their individual "uniforms" are formed by them holding Bernie's Scythe and thinking about their favourite outfit.  Marlene has the ability to warp time and run really fast, kinda makes her the Vigil's "Flash".  She's very confidant, something of a practical joker and has an obsession with photography, or more specifically getting a picture of Bernie.  The Vigil is a very tight knit and loyal group, with each member having a strong sense of family, and Marlene has gone to some extremely inventive lengths to adapt her camera equipment with the aim to achieving a true family portrait of all the Vigil members including Bernie.  (Apparently Reapers don't photograph.  Who knew?) I didn't have any specific ideas about type of voice or accent.  We really aren't given much background on these people, so it gives the actor room to make the part their own.  So, let's see what you can do!  This is a supporting character, she is in most of the book, although she doesn't have many lines. But here character does definitely contribute!

  • We can still take him out.
So, no sealing his ugly ass before interrogation.
Sure,  give ME the ugly one!

  • Rise and Shine! Now Simon, you strike me as a braindead dumbass... so I'll have to make this simple.  I need some answers and you will be the one providing them, okay?  Ugh.... just blink once for yes, twice for no.  No, really. Any eye will do.

  • I'm working on modifying a camera so it can capture Bernie in a photo. We have quite a few Vigil family photos... and she is in none of them. So, y'know... call it a hobby.  (talking to Clara)  Hah! Just look at you!  Rolling with the punches.  Getting used to all of this mighty fast!

Role assigned to: ethanity

Introduced in Issue 2.  James is another member of the Vigil.  He's been a member longer than Sam, but I would say not by much.  He was probably in his mid teens when he was "inducted".  He's absurdly confidant, sometimes a little reckless, not to mention careless. He's also quite the quipster.  And... James is a gamer.  He eats, breathes and sleeps it, when he's not slaying demons in the field he's glued to his gaming laptop laying waste to them in the virtual universe.  He talks the talk all the time, and I would say millions of hours of gameplay have given him lots of battle experience he uses practically to the Vigil's advantage.  He tends to be the Vigil's chief strategist  most of the time, and they rely on him for battle plans and fight scenarios. His favourite gaming buddy is Mia, although because Mia's father and Bernie are on the outs due to some seriously bad ancient history  they don't often get to spend time with each other.  This is about to change. Voice type?  Teenage geek.  go for it.

  • You've gotten yourself some quality ink there, don't you Simon?
I had some, but  they didn't include his little powerup.
He is the seventh necromancer now with a souped-up sigil.  (pronounced Sij-IL). Something isn't right.
Hard to get anything out of them when they go full zombie.

  • You know, in the hands of a skilled necromancer I would hesitate to fight this thing.  But you, Simon, are anything but skilled. See, I play games like this every day and I can tell you this. It's not the strength of a monster but the skill of a player that wins the game. And skillwise, Simon, you are a complete and utter noob!

  • It's gonna be "Simon Says" isn't it?  Called it!
I'll see if my Guildies are online.  I need me a good raid to unwind!

Mia looks and sounds and acts, for the most part, like a girl in her early teens.  She and James are best buds, and they hang together and game together whenever she and her father Henrich get to drop into visit with the Vigil. Which, because of the bad blood between Henrich and Bernie, isn't a lot.   But in Mia's case looks can be extremely deceiving.  She and Henrich were born in 15th century France.  Mia became ill and was dying, and to save her life (because he erroneously believe Bernie would not help) he delved into some  terrible, forbidden necromancy and bound his daughter's soul to that of a primordial. It granted them both immortality, but at a price, for it also inextricably locked them together. She has the ability to turn into a monster-munching monster with a virtually insatiable appetite, but she can only do so if Henrich "releases" her.  So, she is basically an 800 year old kid who wants nothing more than to be with James and game 'til they can't game no more, but she also, when she has to, has no problems morphing into this enormous freakazoid monster that eats everything that opposes her.  With relish.  (sorry.  No I'm not).  Like James she's mighty battle savvy, although a lot of that knowledge comes from practical experience as much as online campaigning. She is absolutely fearless, a bit of a smartass and very, very dangerous. She is the only one other than Henrich and Bernie who know why they don't get on, but she wants no part of the "feud". All she wants to do is be with James as much as possible. And be a kid.

  • Are you seriously questioning me on this? There was a battle.  I can smell both a lesser unformed lich that came through and the scythe of Bernadette that destroyed it.
Really?  And when I say it, it's just an excuse to see James again.
Well, wrong is such a strong, unambiguous word.

  • (Monster Mia) Is the link active, Dad? (yes Mia, dinner is served) Yaaaah!
    Hey, Sam, need a hand?
Mmmmm haven't eaten a voidmind in a decade!
    Who you calling a thing?

  • Don't worry Sam, we got this!
You can leave.  I'm staying here with my family.
Look into my mind and see how serious I am!
