Dear Evan Hansen Cover Group (Any Gender)

Dear Evan Hansen Cover Group (Any Gender)

Project Overview

Hello there! I am Coda Singer and welcome to my project! I plan on doing several covers of songs from Dear Evan Hansen and posting them on youtube and if we are able to I will try to upload a whole Album Cover. I need talented musicians, singers and editors in order to make that happen. If you would like to audition, please do, but there are a couple things you'll need first.

1. A clear microphone/good recording space: I need as little background noise as possible and good vocal quality coming through in order for me to be able to do editing and things like that.
2. A good voice: These songs are tough, there are some very high notes, some hard pitch shifts and some complex harmonies in here. If you have had no experience with reading music, singing in an ensemble, or even singing in general, chances are you're going to have a hard time keeping up in this project.
3. Musical knowledge: I mean this in two ways. One being knowledge of the musical itself; it's characters, the plot, the songs, even harmonies. If you come into this already knowing harmonies, that would make everyone's lives easier. and two, the ability to understand and learn harmonies. Some people can even learn a harmony by simply listening to the track a couple times. That kind of skill will speed this process up significantly.

If you can provide any of those, pleeease audition, and if you don't feel you can provide those but still want to audition. feel free. Who knows? You could be the best person out of all the auditionees for that role.
One last thing, feel free to audition for any role you like, this cover group is not restricted by gender. Although having a female play a traditionally female role would be preferred, as it would keep in pace with the plot and some of the lyrics in the songs, if you are out of the gender set for that role and give me the best performance, you will be cast.

That should be all! Give it your all and even if you don't get cast, just have a blast auditioning. This really is a fun, down to earth musical and I just want to share as much of it as I can with everyone.

  • Evan Hansen: Role

I've decided to multicast Evan. I haven't made any casting decisions as of yet, but I have decided Evan as a character has too many solos to himself to have one person play him. For every song we end up doing that features Evan significantly or has Evan singing a solo, we will cast another Evan. These songs are Sincerely Me, Waving Through a Window, For Forever, Words Fail, Disappear, and To Break in a Glove
  • Auditions and Deadlines

I pushed the deadline back another month as you can see. I knew I wouldn't get enough auditions in only a month so hopefully this month is a little more profitable. And on the subject of auditions, I need all of your help. If you've auditioned for this project and want to see it succeed, I need people out there telling other people to try to audition. I'm simply not reaching enough people and lack the money and influence to do more on my end. So please, tell your voice acting friends and family to come audition. I really want this project to go through.
  • Oh, also

I will also be auditioning for a few of the roles because I wanna do it too. I'll be perfectly fair with the casting of course, I can not belt many of the high notes required for a few of the roles so, basically anyone who can will automatically overrule me as a candidate for the role.

Evan Hansen is a very sensative and nervous character with very strong social anxiety and a smattering of other issues, making him a hard character to pull off. I want to hear emotion and meaning come through these words and these notes, whether you're trying to replicate the original or not, I want to feel what he's feeling. As I am doing with all of the characters in this project, Evan may be played by a man or a woman, whichever gives me the performance I feel worthy will get the role. We will be multi-casting Evan to multiple voice actors so no one voice actor in the group gets too many solos. We will have an Evan for each solo or song that features him that we end up doing: Waving Through a Window, For Forever, Break in a Glove, If I Could Tell Her, Sincerely Me, Disappear, and Words Fail.

  • (Frustrated and a little embarrassed. That sort of red faced angst that you get when someone pushes your buttons in the worst way.) 'Why would you write that!? This has to be perfect, these Emails have to prove we were actually friends! Here, I'll do it."

  • *Sing the beginning of You Will Be Found*
"Have you ever felt like nobody was there,
have you ever felt forgotten, in the middle of nowhere
have you ever felt like you could disappear
Like you could fall, and no one would hear.
Well, let that lonely feeling was away,
maybe there's a reason to believe you'll be okay,
and when you don't feel strong enough to stand,
You can reach, reach out your hand."

  • *Belt the ending of Waving Through a Window*
"On the outside always looking in will I,
ever be more than I've always been
cause' I'm tap-tap-tapping on the glass,
    waving through a window-oh I,
try to speak but nobody can hear so I,wait around for an answer to appearwhile I'm watch-watch-watching people pass, waving through the window-oh-oh-oh-oh,
Can anybody see, is anybody waving back at meis anybody wavingwavingwavingwooooah-ooooooh0h-0h-0h-0h"

Jared Kleinman is Evan's "Best Friend". He is very sarcastic, sick minded, a little narcissistic and a little arrogant but he does care about people. Like basically all of the male roles in this show, Jared is a high tenor, so we will need an experienced male or female singer to hit those notes without sounding too strained.

  • (VEEEERRRY sarcastic and condescending, like he's speaking to some poor child who doesn't understand the world) "Oh! Riiiight, one of those secret email accounts! That you use to send pictures of your penises to each other!"

  • *Sing Jared's part and harmony from Good For You*
"And you say what you need to say,and you play who you need to play, and if somebody's in your waycrush them and leave them behind, well I guess if I'm not of use,go ahead you can cut me loose,go ahead now, I won't mind."

  • *Sing Jared's part and harmony from Sincerely, Me*"HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY!Cuz all that it takes is a little,re-, in-, ven-, tion!it's easy to change if you give it,your, a-, ten-, tion! All you gotta do, is just believe you can be who you wanna be,Sincerely, me,Sincerely, me,Sincerely, meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee (Highest Harmony)Sincerely, me"

Zoe Murphy is the love interest of the main character and the sister of Connor Murphy who has recently committed suicide. When she sings there's a lot of bitterness toward Connor for leaving her and toward her family for not understanding her and being so dysfunctional. We definitely need a lot of character to shine through without sounding like the cliche angsty teenager.

  • (Confused and a little dumbfounded, but uneasy, like she doesn't quite believe what the person is saying. Still friendly though.) "He thought I was awesome? My brother? How?"

  • *Sing the first chorus of Only Us*
"So what if it's us,what if it's us,and only us,and what came before won't count anymore or matter, can we try that?So what if it's you,and what if it's me,and what if that's all that we need to be,and the rest of the world falls away. What do you say?"

  • *Sing the final part of Requiem*"Cause' when the villains fall, the kingdoms never weep,no one lights a candle to remember,no, no one mourns at all, when they lay them down to sleep,so don't tell me that I didn't have it right, don't tell me that it isn't black and white, after all you put me through, don't say it wasn't true, that you are not the monster that I knew."

Connor Murphy is a very troubled man who has social troubles and problems with his family not taking the right steps to connecting with him and he pushes everyone away because he "Knows" they will all just turn on him in the end. He is another tenor one so we'll need someone who can hit these notes fairly effortlessly, or at least sound good when hitting them even if they're tough.

  • (In saddening realization, like he knew this truth was always coming and he dreaded it and it makes him angry near the end) "You... You wrote this for me... No, no, you knew I was the only other person in the computer lab and you printed this to make fun of me!"

  • *Sing the beginning of Sincerely, Me*"Dear, Evan Hansen we've been way too out of touch, things have been crazy and it sucks that we don't talk that much, but I should tell you that I think of you each night,I rub my nipples and start moaning with delight."

  • *Sing the first chorus from Disappear*"No one deserves to be forgotten,no one deserves to fade away,no one should come and go and have no one know that he was even here,no one deserves to disappear, disappear, disappear"

Alana Beck

Alana is a sort of forced friend of Evan Hansen, when she learned he had an idea for a school-wide project, she definitely wanted to add it to the long list of extracurricular she was a part of. She is very intelligent and sort of makes it obvious. She is very articulated and pushes herself into the forefront when she can. Think Rachel Berry from Glee, only about her intelligence and sociability rather than talent. We need a sort of cocky self-confidence where a person is content with themselves, but still does their best to impress.

  • *Sing her part and harmony from Good For You*"Does it cross you mind to be slightly sorry,do you even care that you might be wrong, was it fun?well I hope you had a blast when you dragged me along."

  • *Sing her part from You Will Be Found*"There's a place where you don't have to be unknown, and every time that you call out, you're a little less alone,(Jared's part)From across the silence, your voice is heard."

  • (Very articulated with excellent diction) "I didn't really know Connor Murphy, I think he was in my chemistry class, maybe history too..."
"Connor was a friend of mine, we had a bit of history together, I was sad to learn what happened."
"Connor was one of my closest friends, we had a lot of history together and some definite chemistry."

Heidi is the struggling mother of Evan, she is doing her best to give him everything he needs emotionally and maternally while still working a full time job as a nurse just to make ends meet and provide the best quality of living she can for her son. Her husband left when Evan was young, leaving her an only parent of a child who is struggling with many issues of his own, and it's difficult for her to connect to her son. We need someone who can sound like the happy parent figure and then switch to that emotional anger during Good For You. When she learns what Evan did, she doesn't take it as sadness and get hurt, no, she gets pissed, as I think anyone would do.

  • (That sort of encouraging enthusiasm you get from moms that always sounds a little forced, but she really is trying) "Have you been writing those letters to yourself? 'Dear Evan Hansen, this is gonna be a good day and here's why'? Those letters are important honey! They're gonna help you! Build your confidence!"

  • *Sing the beginning verse and chorus from Anybody Have a Map*
"Can we try to have an optimistic outlook, huh?Can we buck up just enough to see the world isn't gonna fall apart, maybe this year we decide,we're not giving up before we've tried, this year we make a new start.Another stellar conversation for the scrapbook,'another stumble as I'm reaching for the right thing to say,I'm kinda coming up empty, can't find my way to you.Does anybody have a map, anybody maybe happen to know how the hell to do this?I don't know if you can tell but this is me just pretending to know,so where's the map? I need a clue, cause' the scary truth is, I'm flying blind and I'm making this up as I go."

  • *Sing the beginning verse and chorus of Good For You*"So you found a place where the grass is greener, and you jumped the fence to the other side,is it good, are they giving you a world I could never proivide?Well I hope you're proud of your big decision, yeah I hope that it's all that you want and more, now you're free from the agonizing life you were living before. So you say what you need to say, so that you get to walk away,it would kill you to have to stay trapped when you have something new, well I'm sorry I had it rough, and I'm sorry I'm not enough, thank god they rescued you.So you got what you always wanted, so you got your dream come truegood for you, good for you, you, yougot a taste of a life so perfect, so you did what you had to do,good for yougood for you."

Cynthia is the mother of Connor and Zoe Murphy, she is a stay at home mother, and while her husband Larry works to provide the money fro the family, she is at home trying to make sure Connor and Zoe don't murder each other. The amount of disfunction between each individual family member is palpable and doesn't seem to get better until Evan comes along. We need someone who sounds like a sweet person who has been broken down but is still trying her best to hold everything together.

  • (Like she's had to do this a thousand times but nobody will listen to reason, you know how mom's get) "It's your senior year Connor you are not missing the first day!"
"You can't be going to school high, Connor!"

  • *Sing her verse from Anybody Have a Map*"Another masterful attempt ends in disaster, pour another cup of coffee and watch it all crash and burn,it's a puzzle, it's a maze,i try to steer through it a million ways, but each day's another wrong turn."

  • *Sing her part and harmony from Requiem*"I hear your voice and feel you near, within these words I finally find you,and now that I know that you are still here,I will sing no requiem."

Larry is the hardworking father of the Murphy family, providing for his wife and kids as best he can. He is very final about things, if that makes any sense. When he learns that his son committed suicide he cried very little, and didn't cry again after that first time. When things are gone, they're gone, and you move on. But he is kind, and generous, and gives a hint that he may have had significant trouble in his own life growing up. He's a kind soul, but he has his flaws. We need someone who sounds like the kind, joking, father figure.

  • (Like he's excited to be sharing this knowledge with someone, envying their experience of hearing it for the first time.) "Shaving cream... Oh yeah, you rub that in for about five minutes, wrap it in rubber bands, put it under your mattress and sleep on it. And you do that for at least a week, every day, consistent.

  • *Sing the first part of To Break in a Glove*"I bought this glove a thousand years ago, for some birthday or some christmas that has come and gone,I thought we might play catch or... I don't know, but he left it int he bag with the tag still on."
"And thought this method isn't easy, every second that you spend is gonna pay off, it'll pay off in the end.It just takes a little patience, it takes a little time,a little perseverance, a little uphill climb, you might not think it's worth it, you might begin to doubt, but you can't take any shortcuts, you gotta stick it out,and it's the hard way, but it's the right way,the right way,to break in a glove."

  • *Sing his part from Requiem*"I gave you the world, you threw it away, leaving these broken pieces behind you, everything wasted and nothing to say,so I will sing no requiem."
