CrossCode | FanDub

Project Overview

THIS PROJECT IS A FANDUB (We do not own this game)

INTRODUCTION

A small Videogame known as "CrossCode" is a retro-inspired 2D Action RPG set in the distant future, combining 16-bit SNES-style graphics with butter-smooth physics, a fast-paced combat system, and engaging puzzle mechanics, served with a gripping sci-fi story. You follow a player called Lea as she logs into CrossWorlds - a fictional MMO. Lea is not your average player though. She hast lost her memory and is (literally) mute. Now the only way to regain her memory is to play CrossWorlds, discovering all the places the game has to offer and meeting other players on the way that help Lea on her incredible journey. In CrossCode, many players show up during the time the story progresses and as you play, you connect and learn to love everyone you come across - villain and all! Follow us in this adventure of CrossCode!

We're casting for a decent amount of voices to be used throughout the game. Anybody who cast for main roles will be asked to provide lines for additional, smaller roles not featured on CCC. If you're not cast for a main role, and your voice matches the tone of the project, we may ask you to provide lines for supporting roles.

All roles are in English.

DEADLINES AND AUDITIONS

The deadline for auditions is Apr. 30th, 2023. There are currently no plans to extend this deadline. We'll notify voice actors who have been cast in roles by the end of April or during may.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Expect to be warmly greeted by me and my good friend Andrea, we both own the project. We communicate primarily through Discord. If you are unfamiliar with Discord, you can still audition, however, we strongly, strongly recommend participation through Discord so that you can collaborate with your fellow voice actors. We've used Discord and it has always had immense value.

WHAT WE ASK OF YOU

First and foremost, have fun -- this project is a passion project for us and we'd love to see one of our favorite games come to life!

Please submit clean recordings on prosumer mics (no air conditioners in the background, no fans -- we don't mind performing noise reduction on your files, however too much clean-up reduces the quality of your voice). And speaking of clean-up -- please let us handle the post-production. Don't add effects to your lines -- leave that to our audio geniuses :)

Feel free to cut your lines to your best/favorite takes. Three is the gold standard. We have a few voice actors that would rather give us more takes, and that's okay, too. However please at least remove the takes you don't want to be featured on the project

We do occasionally ask for line re-dos, but we do this sparingly and only after great consideration - we realize your time is valuable, and we won't ask for anything we can't work around in edits.

Lastly, since CrossCode is a decently sizeable game, we 'd like to cast people who will be able to stick with us for a while. We're incredibly proud of the acting troupe we've formed over the years, and when starting a new project, we frequently return to voice actors we've worked with in the past.

Lea (Lee-uh) is the main protagonist of CrossCode and a player of CrossWorlds. She has lost her memory for unknown reasons prior to the beginning of CrossCode, and she was entered into CrossWorlds in an attempt to recover it. A problem with her avatar's speech synchronization has caused her to be effectively mute. To work around this, Sergey has hard-coded her avatar with the ability to say certain words, so she is very mute and can only say a few select words. Those words consist of very basic English vocabulary. Lea mainly speaks with head movement (AKA Nodding, shaking her head no, jumping up and down, or the emotions on her face). Later on she is able to respond with words and they are extremely limited, meaning you will be repeating a lot of words during this while having to convey genuine emotion from Lea. These words mainly consist of a lot of 'Hi', 'Lea', 'Bye', 'Why', 'How', 'Wait', 'Meet', 'Sorry' and 'Thanks'. Given the limited amount of words, below will be a sort of script so you have a general idea of what's going on in the scene you're speaking in.

  • [Lea meets with Carla again, this time being given her first word by Sergey] Lea: "Hi!" [Carls responds with: Whoa! You spoke! Is your voice finally back?] Lea: "... ... Hi..." [Carla: "Wait that ain't right."] [Lea is disappointed that she can so far only speak one word, so the second Hi should be a little more sad, put your own spin on it.]

  • [In this scene, Lea and Sergey are speaking with one another about trying to regain her memory. Shortly after, Lea wants to log off and assertively shows that she wants to leave.] "Bye." [Sergey responds: Hm?] "Bye." [This time Lea is a little more annoyed but, still being nice, just says bye again to show her point. Sergey then responds with: "You... want to log off?" in which she nods her head. A few seconds later she remembers something she wants to say and grabs his attention.] "Wait!"

  • [Lea wants Emilie to come meet her somewhere, so she begins to string together some of the words that she can say in order to get her to come.] "Meet! Meet Lea!" [Emilie: "Uhm, You want to meet?" Lea Responds with a nod, but is then stumped when Emilie asks where.] "...Lea Wait!"

Role assigned to: Lanna Rose

Emilie is an energetic young CrossWorlds player who recently joined the game and seems to be quite enthusiastic about it. She has a very competitive nature and wants to prove her skill wherever she can. Emilie is highly competitive. She is quick to befriend Lea and readily shares her knowledge of CrossWorlds. She is shown to be somewhat oblivious, and fails to recognize Lea's muteness despite talking with her extensively. She is highly excited about CrossWorlds, and eager to face any challenges the game may offer. The sole exception to this is bug enemies, as she is shown to have a fear of bugs and will complain loudly to Lea if forced to fight them.

Emilie has a French accent. She says a few French words throughout the game, as presented below.

  • "Ah... I just need a short breather, this Dungeon is long, non? By the way... You did see them too, right?" (Lea responds questionably) "You know... them. The... bugs." (Emilie is speaking to Lea about the Bugs in a dungeon. She is afraid of Bugs and hates to speak about them so her tone is full of disgust.) "Gahhh! I Hate those things!"

  • "L-Lea. Lea, I... I'm sorry!" [Emilie is full of tears as she apologizes to her best friend. She realizes that she misunderstood a mistake Lea made and feels terrible for how mean she was towards Lea.]  "Lea, chérie... I missed you, too! I was acting stupid! I don't know what got over me, I was just so angry. I was angry but I also missed you... You always meant well! I should've known that!"

Role assigned to: LazRiz

Toby is a rather new member of the First Scholars. He appears to be highly knowledgeable when it comes to science which leads to a lot of displeasure whenever CrossWorlds does not hold up to his sense of realism. On the third day, C'tron first makes contact with Lea as she prepares to head into Maroon Valley. He introduces himself and states that he is busy, but offers to party up with her the next day. Toby doesn't necessarily have a specific voice, but he is very acknowledgable and knows his fair share of scientific related subjects. He is a little shy as well.

  • [Toby is once again seeing water below a lake in a cave, and the inaccuracies of the game is causing him to become slightly irritated.] "Aaaand again! Water in a cave. Below a lake. We're LITERALLY below a gigantic lake! There is just no way you could make this work! Just imagine the water pressure!"

  • "It seems like Emilie is still busy with the Maroon Tree Cave. Well... I guess I'll have to take a look around the market. Feel free to join me! Ah there you are. Don't mind me, I was just browsing the beautiful consumables!"

  • "This was another place I waited for you, wasn't it? Heh... I'm not even sure if I waited for all that long. Hm... someone else was here as well, right? That time we met. What was her name again? Ellen...? Oh! Emilie wasn't it? That's right. We played this game together for awhile."

Sergey Asimov is a programmer and one of the main characters in CrossCode. In the game, he is the primary character working with Lea to recover her memories. Sergey is very knowledgeable about CrossWorlds and is eager to share that knowledge with others, to the point of talking too much at times. He can easily get annoyed by those around him, particularly when they use slang terminology or misconceptions related to CrossWorlds, but he tries hard to be patient and understanding. His somewhat uptight personality hides a snarky side and a fondness for bad jokes.

  • There you are! Initialization successful! Oh? Is your speech synchronization malfunctioning? Apparently... Well, something just had to go wrong. But you understand me, correct?

  • "For now, take on this challenge and keep him busy. I know, this enemy looks intimidating, but do not lose hope! I am confident you will be able to handle this!" [Confident tone, very sure that Lea can beat her opponent.]

  • Alright, let us take small steps. Do you remember VRPs? Virtual Ricochet Projectiles? ...Balls?

Schneider is a Crossworlds player who meets Lea after arriving in Rookie Harbor. His real name is Lukas Fink. Schneider is friends with Emilie and has been friends with her before he meets Lea. Though he is very helpful he also enjoys teasing his friends. As a veteran in CrossCode he knows almost every inside detail about the game, and provides tours to new players! Schneider meets Lea and Emilie when they arrive in Rookie Harbor and shows them around, pointing out certain places such as the Info Hub, market place and the Seeker Hub. When he's done with his guide through Rookie Harbor, he shows Lea and Emilie how to form a party and leaves, saying that it wouldn't be fun if an experienced player joined them immediately. Lukas has a German accent and tends to use German words like Zeug and Ja. His accent shouldn't be super thick but it should definitely be noticeable.

  • "Do they seriously assign rooms to all the players here? What is this? Some sort of prison? This is stupid. You know what? I'll just log off right now. Anyway, thank you for playing, Lea. See you soon!" [Lukas is unable to log out and is forced back into the game. He begins to freak out as he is continuously logged back in.] "What? Am I still in the game? This can't be right. I'll just remove the... I... I can't... remove the Cross Gear." [Lukas is panicked at the reveal of his fate in the game.]

  • "I really needed a break after what happened yesterday. I sure lost my nerves, didn't I? Not very proud of that. I'm really impressed with how well you're taking this. Anyway, let's go to the hub again. They won't let me take today's quest unless I'm in a party with you."

Shizuka Sakai - Crossworlds player of the Spheromancer class. She is the playable character in the Prologue of CrossCode. Shizuka is a very decisive and no-nonsense person, who wastes no time tackling a problem head-on, and isn't afraid to deal harshly with those who get in her way. She is stubborn, and unlikely to be dissuaded from a course of action once she has decided on it. She has trouble accepting things that she cannot change. Shizuka uses a short female avatar. She has long, straight black hair, pale skin, brown eyes and a prominent scar across her nose. She has a pair of the standard round Spheromancer ear covers, connected with a metal headband and a larger band behind her head. She is a very serious Character.

  • [Shizuka is questioning a mysterious character, fueled with anger] So you abduct a dying person and let him work until his last breath? Is that it?! I am going to talk some sense into him! Don't get in my way!

  • [Concerned for her brother, Shizuka tries to convince him to stop his work] Satoshi! What do you think you are doing? You are in no condition to do this kind of work now! All you should do is rest...

Gautham Ranganathan is a character who speaks to Shizuka in the prologue. He is a representative of the nefarious organization with which Satoshi has gotten involved. He is only seen briefly, attempting to convince Shizuka to not disturb Satoshi. During this conversation, he puts emphasis on the value of Satoshi's work, lending it substantially more importance than Satoshi's well-being and indicating his substantial disregard for Satoshi. Although he remains polite throughout the conversation, he is quick to throw enemies at Shizuka when she fails to listen, and his pleas become increasingly desperate the further she progresses.

  • "Shizuka, I have to ask you to leave. Time is running short and we don't have a choice! Shizuka... please don't do this. I'm sorry, but I cannot let you go any further."

  • [Gautham is emotionless, batting his fears and anxieties as he accepts everything he has worked on coming to an end. He speaks to Lea with both respect and curiosity. His voice is full of sorrow.] "Congratulations. You beat the challenge... and I gave you my word. Use the teleporter there. It will bring you to the server. Sergey, he is with you, no? I am glad. From this day on... it will all disappear. Vermillion Wasteland, the Designer. My creations. My work. All gone... but I'm glad. After causing... all this misery... for so long. Finally it is over."

Satoshi Sakai is Shizuka's brother. He was dying due to unknown causes, but he pushed himself to complete a project to secure his sister's freedom, which led to his premature death during the prologue. Satoshi's appearance in the story is very brief, but in that time he makes it clear that he feels responsible for getting Shizuka involved in some bad business and that he is willing to do whatever he can to protect her, even if it means his own death. He is likely very intelligent, given how essential he is to the project he was completing.

  • Sister... Why should I rest when I am far beyond recovery? I need to finish this work, it's my final task.

  • I told you about the agreement. I finish this and they will let you go...

  • Shizuka, I'm sorry... I'm so sorry I got you involved in this. Just promise me that you will... get away... Please.

Carla Salvatore is a crew member on the M.S. Solar and one of the main characters in CrossCode. She is assigned with helping to prepare Lea for Crossworlds. Carla is very friendly and charismatic, and is quick to befriend Lea and encourage her through her basic training. She is always quick to speak her mind, and seems to have a mild disrespect for authority, as she stays on very informal terms with everyone, including Captain Jet, her boss. She has a tendency towards laziness, passing her less-desirable tasks to others and finding ways to avoid cleaning up her room.

  • "Hey there, girl! Welcome to our cozy cargo hold! My names Carla, nice to meet ya!"

  • "No way! Is there a way to fix it? Anyways! I'm sure we'll be able to communicate somehow! Non-verbal communication, ya know?"

Apollo is a justice-driven player of CrossWorlds who started around the same time as Lea and Emilie. His respect for the rules and disgust for cheaters are only matched by his outstanding sense of style. Apollo is outspoken and quick to jump to conclusions. He chooses to call out Lea when he suspects her of cheating, despite having neither the proof nor the authority to do anything about it, showing a confrontational attitude and a lack of foresight. Although he may have noble intentions, his smugly attitude makes his criticism seem very holier-than-thou. Apollo and Joern are friends, with Joern being the voice of reason for the more impulsive Apollo. Apollo is quick to seek out Joern's approval for finding a cheater, but Joern tells off Apollo for his attitude and apologizes for his behavior, while threatening to pretend not to know him. Apollo should have a smug tone about himself, it feels like he would be a bit of a keyboard warrior at times, so do with that as you will.

  • "Hmph. Young lady, I'll let you off  this time. Reflect on your actions!" (After battling Lea and losing, Apollo let's her off the hook and warns her to reflect on her actions.)

  • "The time has come... I, Apollo, will show you the right path. The path of a proper Spheromancer! The path... of Justice! Let the duel begin!" (Apollo is getting ready to fight Lea, giving her a justice warrior type speech before they start. He is very confident and self-centered during this speech.)

  • [Apollo, confident as ever, confides in Emilie and informs the group of their enemy.] "Indeed. We Spheromancers are at the very front as expected! Anyway, we all just clashed blades with the Son of the East. Still think it's just a funny ape, Pentafist?"

Joern is a Crossworlds player starting a new character of the Quadroguard class. He is Apollo's friend. Joern has had little interaction shown by which to judge his personality, but he is shown to quickly and bluntly defuse the growing conflict between Apollo and Lea, suggesting a straightforward and reasonable outlook. Joern and Apollo are friends. It is implied that they are also either roommates or brothers (It is briefly mentioned that the duo owns several cats outside of CrossWorlds). Joern is shown to be unamused by Apollo's antics and refuses to humor him, instead apologizing to Lea on his behalf, suggesting that Joern is quite willing to do what is best for Apollo, whether he likes it or not.

Voice description:

  • "Apologies for my friends behavior..." [Joern is slightly annoyed and apologetic towards Lea.]

  • "Hey. Oh, I see. Having business with your girl again?" [He says, slightly annoyed towards Apollo. Once Apollo replies, he gets even more annoyed.] "Well, Whoop-Dee-Doo. Didn't we want to start exploring Gaia's Garden Today? Fine. I'll be cheering on the sidelines, then. By the way, Lea. All by yourself today? I see."

  • "Hey, Lea? Is everything alright with you? You're all by yourself... and honestly don't look that happy to me! Hm. She doesn't really talk much, does she? Poor little thing. Well... here's an idea, Lea. Since you're here by yourself... Do you want to explore the jungle together with us?"

Captain Gerald "Jet" McFly is the captain of the cargo ship M.S Solar. He allows his ship to serve as the initialization point for Lea's Avatar, and oversees her entry into CrossWorlds. Jet is a stickler for order, and tends to run a tight ship, making sure the work of his subordinates is up to standard. He is described as being a little grumpy, and the danger and disruption of routine caused by Lea's presence annoys him, but he is quick to take charge and protect those under his care, personally taking on the Blue Avatar when the latter threatens Lea, and by extension, his ship. He has a very down-to-earth attitude, and little tolerance for arrogance. Captain Jet has a sea captain type accent.

Albert should definitely have a deep toned voice, we don't know a specific accent so you can try anything!

  • "Congratulations" (Beowulf has just given a congratz to Lea but there really isn't much emotion behind it.)

  • "No, that's not a connection error, stricly speaking. It's one of the Avatar servers failing. Crossworlds is run by a huge distributed system. There are hundreds of servers just for the avatars. So it is not unknown that some of them occasionally fail."

  • "Oh? Good day, Lea. Having a stroll around Rhombus Square?" [Albert introduces Lea to his boss, Ivan.] "She just joined us a couple weeks ago. Actually, something quite peculiar about her... Buggy is a pun-loving player and one of the earliest members of the First Scholars guild. His cheerful nature stems mostly from bad puns and jokes and he almost always laughs about his own jests the most. Buggy is a cheerful, fun-loving character who likes to joke around, often on the detriment of the people around him. This is apparent when he teases Emilie of her fear of bugs, or when he jokingly points out that Lukas is "bringing in the girls like usual" when he introduces Lea and Emilie to the First Scholars. He always laughs at his own jests out loud. As his name suggests, Buggy loves bugs.

  • "Old Timer?, huh? I definetely don't get that a lot."

  • "Oh! It's a Lea! Hi! You've been missed! It's good to see you again. Anyway~ You should be aware that, as a First Scholar Member, being absent for this long is absolutely unacceptable.
We therefore demand the following compensation:
    10x Bug Shells
    5x Laser Eyes
    7x Bear Cicada
What? This is all according to protocol! Better check what you sign!"

  • [Buggy trolls Lea through a phone call.] "Congratulations! You're the 1000th caller of this number! As a reward, you will be given 1 million credits! Of course, we'll have to make sure you're simply not a bot calling this number. So all you need to do in order to claim your prize is answer one simple security question! The main antagonist generally referred to as simply Blue Avatar is an avatar with a history with Lea who tries to kidnap her for unknown purposes. The Designer is shown to act superior and condescending to everyone, and completely ignores the desires and opinions of others in favor of pursuing his own goals, whatever they might be. He views avatars as being superior to humans, exemplified by him greatly underestimating Jet and dismissively referring to him as a "mortal". He speaks in a rather odd, stilted manner and comes off as rather out of touch, but has proven himself to be the most powerful character seen to date.

  • "As much as you enjoy your freedom... You should be aware that you do not belong in this place. So you are still clueless...? Very peculiar."

Benedict Sidwell is a businessman and a player of CrossWorlds. He is revealed to be the main antagonist of CrossCode. Sidwell is an eccentric businessman with a cold and calculating personality. He is the one who financed the evotar research and the one who provided Vermillion Wasteland for Satoshi, Shizuka and Gautham. Other than that, not much is known about him. Satoshi, Shizuka and Gautham met Sidwell some time after they all left Instatainment. He agreed to support their evotar research, starting with the Old Hideout in Sapphire Ridge. Sidwell later provided them the Vermillion Wasteland as an unofficial testing ground for evotars.

  • Good morning. She... looks scared? Can't you... speak? But you still seem to understand us, don't you? A mute woman who can still listen... how nostalgic. Do you have a name? What should we call you? How about... Lea."

  • [Sidwell is contemplating the rejection of his ideas and firing from his job. He ponders on the destruction of his project.] "Of course. It's all the same. All the support I gave them... the things I did... it suddenly doesn't matter. Just because of conflicting ideals. All at once things have to go hostile. Sorry. This shouldn't really concern you."

  • [Sidwell recalls his past love with an endearing tone and sadness.] "We met through work several years ago. She was competent... hardworking. Mute.. but that didn't stop her from doing her job. We communicated via writing, at first. Then I Learned sign language. Even then, she was never really much of a talker. Just... very, very good at listening."

Holiday Man bears a strong resemblance to Saitama from One Punch Man. While this is almost certainly an intentional reference, the official stance is that the resemblance is entirely coincidental. The two also share a complete lack of recognition for their deeds, while Holiday Man's aversion to fighting contrasts humorously with Saitama, who is jaded from being too powerful for any fight to challenge him. Holiday Man is commonly nicknamed Saitama by fans due to the reference.

  • "Oh... Oh... What should I do? Oh, hello... I'm sorry but I'm just too distracted to really talk right now. There's just no time. You probably know who I am, right? No? Really?!? But I'm Holiday Man! Giving gifts and bringing joy and peace to people? No? Aw man... maybe you're just new here."
